A fabulous, exciting and well planned day with the owners, Gary and Josh. It started with a cup of tea brewed over an open fire, and some basic lessons as both my Son and I were total novices. Then shooting at targets with two different types of gun - all done with careful attention to safety. Coaching until shooting well enough to move onto the next stage.....well, after some tasty venison burgers! The afternoon was learning how to track, following wild red deer across the most beautiful of scenery. The hunt ended successfully - but deeply respectful of the animal, with no bravado, only some important learning about caring for the environment, and caring for the animals we share it with. So many important lessons for both my Son and I.
A great day - and we are already planning the next one. Highly recommended.

I contacted Basic Instincts and we arranged a morning of fly fishing and an afternoon of pig hunting, both which I had never done before.

The fly fishing guide was really experienced and very friendly. We managed to catch a good size rainbow trout and the scenery and company was fantastic.

The afternoon consisted of a BBQ lunch, then we spent several hours tracking pigs with the hunting dogs on the block basic instincts has access to several kilometers outside of Rotorua. We split into two groups and after 90 minutes or so we tracked down a pig. We discussed quickly how we were going to let the dogs loose and run after it. The adrenaline that pumped through my system at the time was like nothing I'd ever imagined. The dogs had hold of the pig and with the help of the guides, we managed to turn it on it's back and kill the pig by knife.

We took photos and captured it all on video and then took it back to the basic insticts hut to process the meat to take home.

On the way home we saw several large male stags in the same block to cap off a brilliant day.

I'm hooked on hunting and can't wait to try it again.

The Basic Instincts experience was fantastic, the guides knew exactly what they were doing and they were all really friendly and accommodating. I'd highly recommend these guys to novice or really experienced hunters looking for the full kiwi hunting experience.

“Josh is very professional and very friendly to deal with, highly recommend. We had no hunting experiences at all but we had the most exciting day with Josh, everything was well planned from lovely BBQ lunch to playful training to real hunting. If you have no experience like me than Josh is one who not only point you to the right direction, but also a very approachable companion. Overall, Josh is the man we will definitely come back in near future with my other friends”. Awesome`````````````````

I sent my husband and his best mate to NZ for a day hunting trip.
When organizing the trip the Director Zoe was very accommodating and helpful to assist me with their day out.
The trip was a success.
Zoe even took the liberty of arranging a restaurant to a cook them their dinner (the game they caught).

I am sure that my husband and friend will be returning next year and spreading the word about this great company.

This is the story of one of the best trips in my life (and not just hunting trips). Initially I was about to describe the whole experience with Basic Instincts when I realized after writing the first page that this would only interest me and my relatives, so here is the shortened version. We were four guys studying in New Zealand (NZ) from Denmark. Two of us are hunters and since NZ is a paradise for hunters we did an extensive research online where we stumbled upon Basic Instincts. We found their prices perfect for us students and agreed on the terms via email and phone so they adapted to our needs completely. They showed great flexibility towards us in any aspect and yet again they adapted to the difference in level of hunting experience between the two of us (actually our third mate joined us for the two last days and had a blast as well).
The actual hunting started with my mate stalking red deer in challenging and interesting terrain where the guidance lead to seeing a lot of animals but no real shooting possibility to start with. After some hours, the luck was with us, as we saw some hinds which ran away but the stag hadn’t spotted us. My mate got in a perfect shooting position and fired and the stag fell to the ground. My mate happiness can’t be explained as this was his first kill. So the rest of day passed by with getting the stag back to the camp. At dinner the same night we joked about how I wanted to hunt a pig but the question was how? Traditionally back in Denmark hunting a pig with a knife was unheard of but this was the way to do in NZ. So we joked about that I’m not in shape to do it and the joking continued for the rest of the night. So the morning came and we went out and stalked and stalked some traces but no luck to begin with. We reached midday and talked about trying later in the evening when the guide proposed to try a last area. On the way there the dog showed signs and as we approached we could see a boar. So for the last time the guide asked, rifle or knife? I don’t know what got in me but the adrenalin was already pumping so I answered knife! This decision will I never regret, never! Without getting in to many details the adrenalin was pumping so quickly in my body that somehow the boar had hurt me as I was bleeding from my hand but I didn’t realize it all until the guide pointed it out for me.
Additionally after staying with them for almost a week, when leaving them, it felt like leaving real family and not just a hunting business. Lastly the outcome of the trip far exceeded our expectations, we learned a lot about hunting, nature, relaxation and kindness of kiwis. I am definitely going back to visit them.
