The presentation of this place is very well done; lots of exhibits to walk through, in-depth stories and preserved artifacts on display. The best part was the short hike around the grounds that leads to a lovely waterfall and has sweeping views of the valley and Lake Tarawera.

This was an interesting look at the history of the Tarawera Eruption. It was good to learn all about this event and the burying of the pink and white terraces. Would I go again... probably not. Felt that once you've been once you wouldn't need to go again. The whole family learned things about this part of NZ history.

We drove out to the Buried Village after hearing about it from the Whakarewarewa Village tour and it was a really nice and interesting afternoon.

It is always good to have places recommended by others and the Buried Village links so well with Whakarewarewa. The eruption of Mt Tarawera caused such loss and devastation for the Tuhourangi people, but with family members taking in survivors they could endeavour to rebuild their lives and continue to welcome visitors to Rotorua's natural wonders. We attended late in the afternoon as the sun was getting low in the sky, and the natural revegetation over the beautiful ruins of the village was absolutely mindblowing. The Buried Village has preserved as much as possible from the original village, and provides a fascinating look into victorian-era New Zealand. The staff were lovely, and the option for a... More

A friend suggested we visit here, and we are so glad we took his advice. The village was buried in volcanic eruptions in 1886. There is a museum to look through before walking around the site. The museum is beautifully set out, and all the displays are well interpreted. All interpretation on the site focuses heavily on the individuals living... More

Great way to spend time with the kids. Follow the clues around the grounds to receive a small gift back at the gift shop when you have unlocked the final clue. Original artifacts exhumed from the buried village on display. Look for the many coral trout in the stream during the walk around the exhibits. Small walk down some steep... More
