This is an absolute gem and a beautiful day out! I strongly recommend you pay the bit extra for a guide. The guides are volunteers who spend quite a bit of time learning about the history, the birds, the native trees, etc. and they add so much richness to the experience.

When you are on the ferry, make sure to get one of the maps the DOC folks offer for sale (only costs a few dollars).

When you arrive at the island, if you have a ticket for a guided walk, they gather everyone up and describe the different walk options. Depending on the interests, they split everyone up so there were no more than 8 people per guide. It was very impressive how well organised it was.

Also key to note: all guided walks end up at the gift shop/lighthouse where the picnic tables are so they offer to transfer your pack for you so you don't have to carry it on the guided walk.

We did the Hobbs Beach, Kawerau Track, then done the Cable track to the lighthouse with our guide. After our picnic lunch, we then went back (on our own) to the wharf via the Wattle Track. I highly recommend both tracks as they are completely different. A nice thing about the Wattle track is all the water feeding stations which attract the birds.

Also, check out the gift shop - some nice items and the staff are super friendly.

What an amazing experience. We had a wonderful knowledgeable guide (Juliet) who was full of interesting information about he history of the island and of course the birdlife and fauna. The Giant Wetas were incredibly hard to find but we found a couple and they are awesome. We will be back.

We had been wanting to do this trip for years and finally managed to get there after a pleasant ferry trip. We opted to pay the small extra fee for the guided tour which I highly recommend as we would have missed hearing and seeing many of the less obvious birds. We will be back again and plan to stay overnight to see some of the nocturnal activities of the local wildlife.

Went from Gulf Harbour on ferry. Only a handful of visitors and guides. We were lost on arrival as there was no information available to explain where the tracks were and where to go. Our guide Mary was very informative of all the various bird calls and general information about how the island had been turned into a sanctuary. We eventually found the information leaflets for sale up at the shop but only when we had asked about them. These should be available on the ferry or at least at the jetty on the island. There were other people who wanted to know where we had got them from but by then we were all back down at the jetty waiting for the ride home.

This was our second trip in 15 years to Tiri. We did the guided tour, which is detailed and good to hear. We learned heaps and enjoyed a more in-depth education of the flora, history, and birds of the island.
This is a must-do trip for every New Zealander - and a great opportunity for tourists to NZ.
It may have been a bit boring for the teens in the groups but most of us enjoyed it.
It was a hot day. Bring water and snacks and lunch. You can refill the water bottles at the lighthouse and buy cold drinks at the shop (lovely shop!).
Yes, the ferry and tour are pricey but it is great value for a full day's entertainment and helps keep the island sanctuary operating.
Don't forget a hat and sunscreen. Think about bringing your bathing suit and towel for a dip before the ferry arrives to take you back.

We’re native Aucklander’s and have never been here! Was stunning, saw a lot of rare birds, blue penguin, and a tuatara!

Our guide Johnathon was wonderfully knowledgeable and passionate, worth his weight in gold

Couldn’t recommend highly enough! Definitely do it

We absolutely adored Tiritiri Matangi Island and the guided bird walk with our knowledgeable guide Tony. We definitely recommend getting to North East bay for a swim and picnic away from the crowds if time allows. A beautiful island with great birdlife, a wonderful day trip from Auckland - we hope to return again.

A great day out we boarded at Gulf Harbour free parking and only 20mins to the island. Highly recommend the guided tour as a family as the history and commentary was ensured the kids were engaged and saw many birds and learnt new things. Our guide Jacqui was very knowledgeable and made it fun for the kids. Take togs, towel and lots of food the lighthouse and free coffee was great.
