Well worth the Climb

A must do when visiting Auckland. The ferry ride over and the climb to the top are well worth it. The views from the summit are amazing but best to do on a sunny clear day.

Been over here many times with school and family. Never ceases to be a place to enjoy for its unique landscape, flora, caves and views from the top. Several routes to walk up and depending on time you have you can go exploring inside some caves with a bit of crawling and agility. Well worth it if you want to... More

Rangitoto Island is a wonderful short day out and a fabulous way to see Auckland from another perspective. Many superb photo opportunities. It's just a short ferry ride from Queens Wharf and on arrival there are options for the length of walk that suits you. Steep in places and slightly more than a gentle walk. We walked around the scene... More

Reversing the trend of nature this island is returning to its former self with the removal of introduced pets. The walks are unique, walking on lava paths, make sure you wear good shoes have water and a snack handy as there is no shop on the island. The views are magnificent on a sunny day and Mckenzie Bay is a... More

Choose a nice day and the view is wonderful. The terrain is very interesting as is Auckland's most recent but now extinct volcano. Can walk up or take the transport offered.

My wife and I always go to Rangitoto for a walk on Boxing Day, have done for for the 6 years we've been in Auckland. Start off with a quiet short ferry trip from downtown to Rangitoto and then follow one of the many walking routes to the summit. Peaceful, lots of stunning views of Auckland and some beautiful beaches.... More

I'd rate the walk to the peak of Rangitoto and the lava caves as the essential thing to do on a visit to Auckland.

Fabulous walk, took a picnic to eat at the top. The terrain is harsh volcanic rock so don't wear sandals (or you'll get laughed at!) a real gem on the Auckland tourist list
