Housed in an Iconic building within the grounds of a tranquil park, the Auckland Museum is a place to discover and learn about New Zealand's culture and its natural history. Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Out of all the museums in NZ, this is one of the top museums considering different exhibitions come in through out the year.
I went to see the Greek Exhibition which showcased multiple artifacts from ancient Roman empire.
Wonderful experience.
Museum itself has different categories of permanent show aread to showcase Maori culture, world war, history and artwork.
Auckland residence will get free access to Museum but have to pay for special exhibitions.
Winter garden is a must see if you enjoy native plants and flowers.

I loved the war and the volcano exhibits. The Maori exhibit was well done. I would have liked a tour of the South Pacific exhibit

Not a big fan of museums but this was quite enjoyable. By far a lot better then Te Papa museum in Wellington. Good variety of things to look at it. Underground parking was fine when it's raining. Easy to navigate around

I am sure it must be a wonderful museum but at $28 each for overseas visitors it is far too expensive. This about the same fee as the Louvre! British Museum is free! As is Sydney Museum. We will go to Te Papa and Wellington Museum which are both free but will give a donation.

We are local and enjoy visiting the museum on many occasions over the years. Our kids have always liked seeing the history of different cultures and the wanders of the world.

Originally from Ireland but live in South Island, what can I use for proof of address? Would bank statement be okay? Dont have kiwi license!

You can use almost any bill with an address to prove residency but you need photo id to prove it is yours.
It would be better apply for a "My Museum" card at the desk which will then allow entrance without the other paperwork.
I found the Staff at the entrance were incredible patient and flexible when dealing with our multitude of questions.
Is the VR exhibition worth the visit? Did it receive good reviews:)

I’m from UK, but live in Auckland, am I entitled to the free entry for ‘Aucklanders’ ?

Hi Carl, I recall that you needed to provide proof of residency - if you have any kind of ID which shows your Auckland address you should be fine.

I plan to be in Auckland for 3 full days and I believe I will go to the Auckland Musuem on Oct 27 or 28, 2018. I am wondering if I need to get tickets to the Maori performance in advance or the day I go to the musuem. I plan to be at the museum first thing in the morning around 10am when it opens. Any advice or opinion would be welcomed. Thanks.

Hi there Robert, if it's a large group of people, we suggest booking in advance, but for small parties it should be fine to just show up on the day! If you have any other questions, feel free to fire them through!

Hi there, how far is it to walk from the Port
Thank you

20 mins up hill. There is a free red bus that goes from Queen St (Auckland's main st) or Britomart terminus just 100m or so from cruise terminals. Alternatively you could take the Link bus for a couple of bucks. The free red bus or the link bus take you to all the main city sites and cruise ships dock right downtown so don't bother with expensive shore excursions. Locals are friendly and will be happy to point you in the right direction. Viaduct Harbour is also a short walk from the docks. you can see the old steam tug William c daldy there. ask for a look around. still coal fired and operational. :)

Chilly chilly chilly! You should be prepared for cool weather/ fine but cold and rain. Bring layers and warm shoes/boots. You could experience beautiful sunny but cool days. Sometimes its also a matter of comparison: if you are used to warm climate you will feel the cold so much more. If youre used to cooler weather youll take it in your stride In June go to North NT or Qld for some warmth!
can I bring stroller for my kid?
