Wonderful trip over night to see if we could spot the Little brown kiwis that live there. We were lucky enough to see two at close range and hear another two! Important to wear rustle free clothing. Other than that the island is full of bird life of every type and the scenery spectacular. So worth a trip if you've... More

We went on a trip to Rangatira and hiked to the top of the island. If you're wondering if it's worth the hike, then hesitate no longer, just do it! I've heard of stories by early settlers about the "deafening" sound of bird song in the NZ bush when they arrived. I've never experienced that anywhere else, but I reckon... More

Kapiti Island is a nature sanctuary and it is easy to drive to Paraparoumu from Wellington. You need to book ahead to be able to get on the boat over to the Island as only a limited number of spaces are available on any given day. This is a place for bird lovers and nature lovers and for those who... More

We visited the island itself on 5th January 2016. The cost of the trip to the island (a national reserves) and overnight accommodation (privately owned on the island) was NZ$ 700 (approx. £350. The island is very steep, packed lunch is needed and the trees and vegetation are fantastic, as are the birds. After an initial talk about the island,... More

If you like nature, especially birds then this is a great trip. It's a unique island due to the conservation which has been carried out. We are not massive bird watchers but it was great to see lots of life sadly missing from other NZ forests. We didn't quite make it to the top of the island (had a baby... More

We used the very straight-forward Kapiti Island Nature Tours boat to cross to the island. This place is quite wonderful. It is possible to get close to very rare birds and there is lots to see both on the walk to the summit and around the back of the beach. The introductory talk by DOC staff is just right and... More

Thanks Charles B for your positive comments. Just as a point of clarification- the introductory briefing is done by one of our team-not the Dept Of Conservation. Of course, we work very closely with our partner (DOC) under a contractual agreement to operate in a way that enhances the development of the Nature Reserve. thanks again. More

Our Ferry sped at high speed over a choppy sea, every bounce an adventure, in 15 minutes we beached on driftwood strewn beach. Our guide was an absolute well of knowledge which he shared willingly and enthusiastically!!! He was in love with Kapiti Island and wanted to share that love with us!!! Next came the hike to the Northern summit,... More

JPGEE thanks for your warm comments. I'll pass your regards onto our team. Yes- seeing Kiwi in the wild-even if it is just a fleeting glance sometimes- makes the effort worthwhile. thanks again for visiting Kapiti Island with us. More

This is a unique place and a must if you want to experience indigenous bird life in the wild. The island is totally pest free, so the wildlife is unafraid and relaxed. Boats go everyday, weather permitting, but do book ahead as numbers are restricted. We saw 3 takahe and a chick, which was so special. Loved it.

This was an excellent overnight trip. Several people saw a Kiwi and I saw my first penguin in the wild, plodding back to his/her burrow, and distinctly confused by the attention from the group of humans! There's loads of New Zealand's birds everywhere, including flightless ones. The Tuis and bellbirds chatter constantly during the day, and the Kiwis call a... More

Hi Nancy, Sorry I didn't get to meet you when you visited the Island-and happy that most aspects of your visit met your expectations. I will investigate the issue around not responding to non-nz phones for call or txt- I can't see any reason why we shouldn't do this. Thanks for raising the point. regards More

A guided tour of this paradigm of conservation excellence, boat transfers included. Absolutely magnificent. We saw 5 species of birds, now extinct everywhere else, which we had never seen before. So uplifting and exciting. Boat transfer system worked really well and the guide (Robert) could not have been better. Wonderful value for money. This is a critically endangered parrot, the... More
