Lake Waikaremoana is absolutely stunning. Our first day up the Bluff from the Onepoto shelter to Panekiri hut saw us ascend the side of bluff covered in beautiful magical forest. When we arrived at the hut we were literally in the clouds! There is a great view of the lake from here. The next day we journeyed down the bluff... More

I went there to do one of the great walks. I made the mistake of coming from wrong side and did a 70 km drive along unsealed road - it was pretty rough in places. Got there and some major building works going on. Large developed area with cabins, shops and harbour. The forest and lake to my mind was... More

Hiked around this lake with a group of friends...starting at Onepoto. Day one was a good slog uphill to the first hut, with wonderful views and spots to stop for lunch. Hut 1 was quite basic (for a great walk hut) but satisfactory. Day two was a very short walk mainly downhill to the lakeside. The hut for the night... More

Spent the night in one of the cabins at the lake. It was very comfortable and the staff couldn't have been more helpful. The lake was a lovely place to spend some time and was obviously very popular. It has a variety of accomadation levels from camping to family cabins. Basically we were very lucky to even get the cabin... More

Ideal for a weekend getaway. You don't have to be hugely into tramping / walking or boating, just as good to hire a cabin at Waikaremoana Holiday Park (roughly $100 p/night) and have a BBQ, walk down to the lake front and have a swim. If you're into walking there's plenty of choice. I'm not a fan of massive walks,... More

Absolutely loved this walk! We were lucky enough to have gorgeous weather, it was hot but the track is mostly sheltered and if we got too hot we just jumped in the lake! It was pure bliss. We did the walk in 3 days, staying 2 nights. As we weren't going to be able to get to the Lake until... More

Best ever guided walk. Planning, resources, personnel, guide Sam was the very best experienced guide I have had in my long life. 7 in the group of very compatible hikers, Sam the guide explained all the interesting facets of the walk in layman so terms. Piri the boatman& chef provided us with gourmet meals. Tumanako provided us Maori legends both... More

Thoroughly enjoyed my four day, three night, Lake Waikaremoana guided walk with Sam the guide and Perrie the boatman and BBQ king. All aspects of the walk were well executed and ran to schedule. The enroute commentary was good and the meals well prepared. The walk and side walks had interest and variety. Very interesting morning tea stop at a... More

This place is amazing with so much to do. The waterfalls by the visitors centre are amazing, the hike up to Lake Waikariiti was peaceful with amazing bird life, exploring the caves was exciting - a little hairy at times - and Lou's Lookout showed off the incredible rock formations. One of my favourite places in NZ.

Fantastic scenery - poor facilities. The huts have inadequate facilities - even next to a massive lake the operators can't be bothered to run a pipe and put cold showers in the huts - or even toilet paper! Crowded, and often dirty facilities are a real disappointment on what should be a "great Walk"
