- catkid3Victoria, Australia148 contributionsGreat for kangaroo spottingLess than 3km from the CBD is Heirisson Island, a spacious natural reserve which provided great opportunities to look for kangaroos. Only saw three on my visit (around 9:30-10am), but all were very calm and seemed unbothered by my presence. If you're looking for greater numbers of kangaroos, probably best to visit very early morning or at dusk. Took me about an hour to walk through the entire reserve. There are toilets across the road from the reserve in Charles Paterson Park.Visited December 2022Written 10 December 2022
- julie88888888Yarm, United Kingdom64 contributionsGreat views of kangaroos. On our last day walked the 20 mins from our hotel before breakfast at 6.15 am. Went through the gate and as we were walking saw droppings on the ground but no kangaroos. Kept walking for quite a while then hubby pulled me back and saw a kangaroo looking at us,Quickly got a few photos and walked round to the other side and there were 3 kangaroos then one more hopped into view. So happy got more photos and video . Our guide on our tour had gone at 12pm the previous day and a family from our tour had gone late morning .Neither had seen any kangaroos so it paid off going early.Visited February 2023Written 5 March 2023

It was a bit wet when I did so the kangaroos were hiding away. It is a lovely spot for a walk but they are doing some works so you have to go back the way you came.Visited September 2023Travelled soloWritten 20 September 2023

The place is amazing. The restaurant was perfect. The tour to see the quokas was the best thing, not to mention the tour-person who was very attentive.

Its nice to bike around the island, its well kept and I made a kangaroo friend. It was nice and relaxing to just sit there in nature without a crowd. There is a bicycle rental at the other side of the bridge if someone doesn’t want to walk.

Took the free red CAT bus to "Queens Gardens" (stop #81 or 104, under 10 minutes from Wellington St Perth Station) then walked about 20 minutes across the bridge to Heirisson Island's very cute kangaroos on the right hand side, after entering 2 wire gates. Arrived at around 5:30 pm, an hour before sunset and saw at least 4 very cute kangaroos grazing and hopping about, just steps away! Nice walk along the river with CBD highrises in the background. Just lovely! Recommended if you are in the city but want to see kangaroos up close in nature (previously just saw them from the car driving down to Margaret River)

This island lies in the middle of the Swan River. It's on the Causeway which connects Victoria Park and East Perth. The island was named after a crew-member on the Naturaliste, a French ship which explored the area. Heirisson Island has been upgraded in recent years, Its traditional custodians are the Nyoongar people. Although it's walking distance from the city, there are kangaroos and other native animals to be seen, often in the late afternoon.

This place is beautiful. I can see why the indigenous peoples love this place so much and it is great that everyone can appreciate it. It is looked after by the Rangers which is excellent as it is clean and tidy for everyone to enjoy.

I visited on a hot May afternoon. Hopped on a bus from Elizabeth Quay that brought me to Victoria Park Transfer station, and Heirisson Island is about a 10 min walk from there.
The place is very self-explanatory and free for you to explore. I guess it was too early and the weather was hot, so not a lot of kangaroos around. I did manage to see 2 western grey kangaroos. Worth a visit (it's free!) if you have time to spare!

March weather is very good. About 22-26 degrees and blue skies. You’ll be able to find and photograph kangaroos.

Is it a good place to visit in July?

Well, I don't live in Perth, but July is in winter there, and the kangaroos are always on the island, so as long as it isn't raining, I think a July afternoon/evening just before sunset would be perfect.

I would like to know how to get to Heirisson Island by public transport? Do you have far to walk?
Sam T
Perth, Australia74 contributions
It's a short walk from the CBD, meaning no more than 10 minutes. Buses are free in Perth CBD. It's also not far from the Crown Casino resort which is just over the causeway (bridge).

Why can't Heirisson Island get totally opened up to visitors. Something attractable to people especially the southern side. The north side is completely uninviting with nothing to offer.

Heirisson island is home to a number of Kangaroos which for a while now has been closed off to tourists due to a number of issues that occurred. Unfortunately, its a few people that spoilt it for the majority. But its important to protect the Kangaroos, so they kept the section fenced.

How can we reach Heirisson Island from Perth CBD by public transport? I do not have an international driving license and do not want to take the expensive full day tours either. Any pointers would be highly appreciated.

Catch a bus that goes over the Causeway or goes as far as the WACA cricket ground. Then you have to walk over to Heirisson Island . Careful crossing over the Causeway as pedestrian travel is hazardous there.
