Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A wonderful and atmospheric venue to screen movies. The tall pines surrounding the seating area creates a vibe! The pizza outlet and bench seats for picnics are great.

I have always loved this outdoor cinema space from going to sit amongst the pines as a teenager so it was great to be able to go back and visit it. These days, you can buy food there as well as take your own picnic before the film starts. A delightful summer night.

Summer in Perth is notoriously sultry. This theatre of pines is cool when other places are hot. As the cooling sea breese rustles through the branches, you can relax and watch a movie in comfort. The Perth Festival's movie season is always interesting. Even in these days of instant communications there's always something engaging to watch at the Somerville Auditorium.

A magnificent grove of pine trees encloses the space that becomes a summer outdoor film auditorium. A wonderful casual night complete with canvas seats and picnic areas. There is a need to queue for entry which is 6pm and if it is popular, patrons can be turned away if the capacity is reached. Food is available , as is coffee and a bar. Many bring their own picnic. Cushions are supplied or bring your own and sometimes it can be cool, so a rug is useful. Mosquitoes can be present, so it is useful having repellent available at the entrance. Friendly staff and often quality films.

The Somerville Auditorium is a cinema formed by pines. It is a theatre for the Festival of Perth. Films that might not atherwise be shown in WA could be viewed here.. The Somerville Auditorium is on the campus of the University of Western Australia (UWA) at Crawley. In the old days, before widespread air conditioning, the Somerville Auditorium was a blessed relief from Perth's hot summer nights. The Festival of Perth, for better of worse, has remained a local event. It's a pity that more people can't experience this "cinema of pines."

This is a special place, huge mature pine trees surrounded by gardens. See the ones in photo, ...well there is enough of them all around to create deep shade all day. The drill is to arm yourself with a folding chair or a picniic rug. Either bring a picnic or buy a pizza there ( top class pizza not the cheap things smothered in cheese but really classy) bring wine and a glass. There are some grassed areas to sit and eat before you take chair etc back to the car after which you sit in one of the canvas chairs or the plastic chairs that you have "reserved or in the Australian vernacular "bagsed" by putting a cushion or blanket on it. Yes Perth can be cool in summer as the sea breeze comes in. The movies are arthouse style and usually have subtitles . European , South American , Indian, Canadian - all sorts. I find they are well selected and interesting and often quirky. However the movie is only part of the experience. I suggest you arrive around 540 or 530 if you hate queues, do the dinner caper on a rug or folding chair with wine, watch the light fade through the trees and the movie comes on. Parking is in the car parks around the university either to the north of the theatre/ auditorium or to the Sth East towards the river. Google earth will show you the options. Tickets on line or at the door but they do sell out so don't go at film time to buy a ticket. As a visitor you will start wondering if this is Perth life and how amazing. We do go to work but we do enjoy this gem too. Only open in summer when we rarely have rain. We get nearly all our rain in winter.

Somerville Auditorium is an outdoor cinema, framed by mature trees. It's a great venue to escape the Perth summer heat, which can be oppressive. It's also a venue for the Festival of Perth film series. The Auditorium is on the campus of the University of Western Australia (UWA) at Crawley.

The outdoor auditorium at Somerville UWA is the nicest outdoor cinema I've ever been to - while the film choices are definitely different and not to everyone's taste (they mostly seem to come from film festival circuits), just the experience of the evening is fantastic. There are food stands by the entrance to order food for your picnic (most people come a couple of hours early to pick out seats for the film and then to set up shop to eat on the grassy area beforehand), and the stone-fired pizzas are definitely something to try. Coming early is definitely the thing to do - it gives you time to pick where you want to sit during the film and then sit and eat dinner and chill in the twilight with the other people there, it's so much fun. The auditorium has been covered in string lights and there are lots of beach chairs to sit on so you're not on the floor (unless you want to be) for the film. Fair warning, the chairs aren't the most comfortable so bring a pillow for sure, as well as a blanket or shawl or something as it gets cool once the sun is down because of the breeze off the water. I think the season runs until March or April, so definitely check it out. It's about $15 a go, but definitely worth it.

Such a beautiful evening. We arrived at 6.30pm and was grateful that we had prepurchased our tickets online as it was a sold out event. We were told it was grass seating only left but we managed to find two seats together towards the back. I would recommend also prepurchasing the food online as well if not taking a picnic as many food venues had sold out or stopped taking orders. Take pillows / cushions and blankets as the chairs are not comfortable and it can get cool. The movie itself was very funny and it is just such a beautiful location it would be difficult not to have a lovely evening out 😊

This is such an iconic place in the summer. With an eclectic range of films to keep you interested, and room for a Picnic and glass of wine beforehand, it’s where to go for an evening with friends. It’s getting busier every year so don't be late!
