Perth's favourite playground, the Swan River is a stunning waterway which winds its way from the Darling Scarp to Fremantle. This natural attraction is popular location for Perth locals and visitors to enjoy a day out boating, fishing, skiing, paddling, swimming, picnicking or simply enjoying its vista.Rich in environmental and cultural values, the Swan River was named Derbal Yerrigan by the local Aboriginals who believe that the river was created by the rainbow serpent ‘Waugal’, a dreamtime spirit taking the form of a giant snake. It is believed that the Waugal created creeks, waterholes, lakes and valleys on its journey to the ocean.

Relax on a cruise on the swan river. You can choose to have lunch on the ferry if money isn't an issue. Otherwise, take a picnic lunch to eat. Free coffee and tea on ferry

Take the ferry from Elizabeth Quay to South Perth & you will be rewarded with a fantastic place to walk right along the swan river. Very, very wheelchair friendly which is most definitely a huge bonus.

The city was founded upon and remains centered around the river. It is not as well exploited as most other river-centered cities but huge strides are now being made to correct that - a new quay, fancy restaurants and sea wall improvements. There's many grassed...More

Can be seen and experienced from a number of different viewpoints, angles, locations... It makes Perth such a pretty place, particularly when the weather is nice. The drives to and from Freo are very pleasant with the river right by your side the whole time.

What would Perth be with Swan River? I would take Mounts Bay Road to get to work meetings whenever possible. The drive is scenic, serene, relaxing and has the added mystery of a statue in the waters known to the locals as Eliza, by Tom...More

Hi fisherman- sorry I didn't reply quickly. Yes, plenty of fishing spots all along the river. I'm not sure about restrictions but I think the new developments wouldn't encourage fishing- but that would be in the city's... More
