University with a unique history
May 2020
Lectures began at the University of Western Australia (UWA) in 1913, making it the first -- and for may years only -- degree granting institution in WA. The "campus at Crawley" is picturesque. UWA is situated on the banks of the Swan River. The grounds are quite beautiful. They include the Sunken Garden and the Somerville Auditorium, a cinema formed by trees that is cool on Peth's hot summer nights.. UWA has educated the elite of WA for many years, including almost every Rhodes Scholar. UWA is well worth a viist, including the campus hub, the grand Winthrop Hall.

Top 5 places to visit in Perth
Feb. 2020 • Friends
There’s a few places that I recommend visitors and tourists to visit when in Perth - and this is one of them.’

The buildings here, whilst actually fairly young, look like they are over 200 years old due to the brickwork / stones used to construct the buildings, and the style of the buildings built here.

Favourites are Winthrop Hall and surrounds, and the Sunken Garden. The columned walkways here help to make it a top tourist spot, and you can expect to see tourists visiting here to take pictures of and enjoy the architecture of the buildings, intermixed with the students attending university here.

Top 5 places to visit in Perth.

It’s great to visit on weekends when it’s a lot quieter.

This is a fabulous piece of architecture that is also a current day modern university. Its a credit that it has remained largely intouched and still being effectively utilised.

The uni encourages public access which enables people to walk around the grounds to enjoy the beautiful buildings and landscape.

Situated across the road from Matilda Bay Swan River it has the perfect location.

Sandstone university an academic leader

UWA was the first degree-granting institution in WA; for many years, the only one. The grounds are picturesque and the buildings are reminiscent of a bygone age, where attractiveness was as important as function. Winthrop Hall is named for an early donor, take a look at it if you are visiting the Campus at Crawley.

Pleasant campus
Mar. 2019 • Friends
By European standards UWA is not an old university, but still over a hundred years of academic formation is a historic achievement. Established in 1911 the university was first located on Irwin street in downtown Perth and moved to the present day campus in the early 1930s. It was envisaged that students and staff would be better able to focus in a tranquile and natural environment. UWA now has around 25,000 students and the campus terrains sometimes feel a bit crowded. Still the buildings are far apart and there are lots of green spaces and areas to do sports.

Remarkable is so many students seem to arrive and leave by car! Where near Dutch universities you see bicycles all over the place, very few students in Perth move around by bike. There are large car parks here, though students also take one of the frequent buses. I did not see anyone walk to campus. Downtown is only 4 km away.

Beautifully maintained campus with Tuscany-style buildings
Feb. 2018 • Business
The University of Western Australia in Perth is one of the oldest universities in Australia. Its beautifully maintained campus is definitively worth a visit from a touristy point of view. The park-like campus comprises a number of beautiful and impressive old buildings. Particularly notable is Winthrop Hall, the most prominent landmark of UWA campus. With its "campanile" and the surrounding pool and cypress trees it makes you feel like being in Florence, Italy! Another impressive sight was the giant fig tree on campus, which unfortunately collapsed partially in November 2018.

THE University of Western Australia. Prestigious sandstone university. Elitist - yes. Selective - yes. Enviable reputation for quality research.I spent 7 years there as an undergraduate and postgraduate.

One of Australia's most attractive universities
Sep. 2018 • Friends
It's many years since I graduated from UWA, but it's always a joy to pass back through the campus when I return to Perth for visits. Beautiful location near the river and generally very attractive gardens and buildings. A highlight of a visit to Perth.

Probably the most beautiful university campus in Australia, on the edge of the Swan River. Walk through the Great Court and around the Winthrop reflection pond during the university holidays, visit the University Club for lunch (non-members welcome)...
