Information / quiz sheets to get the kids involved and busy reading stuff as wellVisited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 15 October 2023
- rob27898Port Kennedy, Australia463 contributionsWorth a visitSlightly pessimistic walking around the building and closed veranda gates, but actually really impressed. I was keen to understand the whole Japanese and China town culture in Broom and once you work out where to start in this museum, you can learn and see a lot. The large printer interp is good and tells the story with some artefacts to add texture. When the interp runs out though, I wasn’t really sure what was going on. Considering it it’s volunteer run it’s a great little place but I would make it clearer where the start is and look to add more interp on the outer walls to add some context as to what everything is ‘after the war’. Worth a visit.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 31 October 2023
- JoanneLake Mary, Florida2,105 contributionsQuaint little museumThis is a quaint museum - small but packed with a lot of interesting things. I really liked the front building which had a nice display of the pearl industry and beautiful shells. There are several buildings and one in the back has a tiny dinosaur exhibit and different kinds of shells. There are some airplane parts outside and nice shade trees. Lots of parking space across the road where there is a small park.Visited February 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 17 February 2024

We really enjoyed this informative museum. Make sure you allow plenty of time as it is only open for 3 hours each day, but they do a pass out to return the next day if you run out of time.
The history of pearling was very interesting and the displays were excellent.

This is a very well laid out and informative museum to learn a lot of history, both good and bad, about Broome. Lovely volunteers run the museum and happy to have a chat and answer any questions. And the air-conditioning if much appreciated. Very reasonably priced to get in. Make sure you allow yourself enough time for a good look around and to watch some of the films they have available.

The history of Broome is fascinating. I have visited Broome many times but had never before found time for the museum. I should have - because Broome's history is so very interesting. At the museum I learned that by 1910 Broome was the largest pearling centre in the world.
After being educated about the history of the pearling industry in the main part of the museum building, I stopped and watched a video, "The Hello Girls" playing in the rear part of the main building, amongst the telephone switchboard display. It was the highlight of the museum for me.

We enjoyed seeing and reading about the history of Broome. The photos and items are well presented. Pearl Luggers and divers, the war years, dinosaur history, shells, communication - all is explained well and worth seeing.

This museum is an unexpected gem in Broome. It tells more recent stories about pearling, World War II bombings, and local history including the role of the telephone exchange ladies. Some of Broome’s ancient history such as the dinosaur footprints is presented. The museum remains a work in progress with some items under restoration. Hats off the many volunteers who are involved in enhancing this visitor experience.

A lot of local history on display which we found very informative. The story of the plane that crashed after being shot down contains diamonds from the Netherlands on their way to Australia for safe keeping during WWII was something we never heard about before. There was a lot of details about Broome that was very interesting

This is an interesting little museum which is well worth a visit if you are passing by. There is a lot of displays and information about the history of Broome. The physical space is quite small and the museum was busy during my visit which made moving around and viewing everything a bit difficult.

Our whole family really enjoyed this museum. Great exploration of the history including diving, pearling, and the Indigenous history. There's a lot to understand in the very multicultural history of the town, and the material is presented in an engaging way.

The Broome museum is probably the best we have been to. Great displays and concise information.
Do suggest that maybe the TV with documentary in the first room is moved to a different location, as after a few people start watching it gets crowded near the doorway.

How can I get hold of a copy of the taxi-driver's biography, and a 'Telephone Girls' video ?
Written 23 February 2019
The telephone girls DVD was on sale at the museum during our visit in January 2019. They also played it in the museum which was great.

Yes, and g'day !
Last time 'round you were out of copies of both the taxi driver's biography - he who made that assessment of his home town - and the video based on The Telephone Girls. Any chance now ?
