Recently were booked in to visit Bell Gorge as part of a trip through the Kimberley region, we were staying at Mt Hart Wilderness Lodge only to discover the road into Bell Gorge was still closed due to the big wet season.
Our tour hosts did the next best thing and organised at short notice a light plane flight over the gorge 3 passengers at a time.
As we realised later in out trip, we did not overly miss seeing this gorge up close as we saw countless others and the plane trip was awesome. The photographic opportunity from the plane was also greatly appreciated by all our group. The old situation - when one door closes, usually another one opens.
Big thanks to Colin and Mietsie.

Bell Gorge is one of the most beautiful gorges to visit along the Gibb River road.
Located 29km off of the Gibb River road on the left hand side and is clearly sign-posted.
Camp at Silent gorge campground, which is 19km from the turn-off and Bell Gorge a further 10km in. Some parts of the road a rough and very corrugated, but that will also depend on the time of year you are travelling. Overnight camping and entry fees apply here.
A great swim hole only a 10-15 minute walk from the car-park and great photo opportunities abound here from many spots and especially in the afternoon light.

I loved Bell Gorge!!! Nobody I'd spoken to who'd been to The Kimberley had mentioned this gorge to me - I have no idea why, it is simply breath taking. My favourite of the holiday.
An easy walk. Could have spent a couple of hours here. Make sure to take you swimming stuff for a nice dip.

Bell Gorge is absolutely beautiful and definitely worth the 30km detour off the Gibb. Once you get there, it's a relatively easy walk (if you don't have mobility issues) to the top pool where you get a lovely view over the Gorge and the falls. You can stop and have a dip there, but if you're up to it and complete the rocky scramble to the bottom, you'll be well rewarded. We arrived around 3pm when there weren't too many people about and it was very serene.
Tip - wear good walking shoes and put your swimmers on before you head in (there's nowhere to change if you're modest!). Carry your stuff in a backpack and keep at least one hand free to negotiate the rocks if you're going down to the bottom of the gorge.

Rough, corrugated road into Bell Gorge, however worth the view. Then about a twenty minute stoney walk into the upper level of the pool. The walk down to the lower pool is quite difficult. There are more shady areas on the lower level and the water fall view and sound is extremely relaxing. Take drinks, food etc and enjoy your time. We swam in the larger lower pool and the infinity pool. Note rocks are very slippery and most people slid in on their derrières. Adequate parking and toilets available. Approximate time from Derby is two to two and half hour on reasonably road then another half hour from turn off on rough corrugation. Camping is available near Bell Gorge or Glamp in APT tents.

The walk is not a difficult walk from the car park but it is a walk where car needs to be taken in the early stages of the walk as you are walking on rocks which can be unstable and you can easily fall over on this stage. Once through this stage of a couple hundred metres the walk is relatively easy. When you get to the Gorge what a magnificent sights with the river running down the valley to a waterfall where the water plunges into this deep waterhole in the gorge below. To take photos of the falls and the valley there are some excellent spots on the side you walk in on along the edge of the gorge. There are some nice ledges that you can get out on. The is an excellent overhang right next to the top of the falls where you can sit in and out of the sun and the heat. You can swim in a water hole at the top of the falls and there is a walking trial up along the creek above the falls. To get to the bottom of the falls you have to cross the river and the difficulty depends on how much water is flowing down the river. Once across the river you climb the hill for a short while 50 meters and them you start the climb down to the bottom of the falls and the gorge. The climb down is a bit steep in places and there is only two difficult spots to get over so if you take it easy and are careful it is not difficult. Once down the bottom you can go for refreshing (cool) swim to the bottom of the falls. A very good spot on a hot day. Was told that you could go further down the gorge but could not find the track. A place well worth going to but be prepared to spend at least 5 hours to do it properly.

The only negative for Bell Gorge is the reasonably difficult walk in along rocky water courses.
But it is worth the effort as the pools & scenery are stunning.
The first "set" of pools are very good then it is another reasonably hard walk over the hill to the falls & lower pool.
Great swimming at both locations & the cliffs & scenery are definitly worth the effort.

Bell Gorge has a big reputation and it's warranted. The walk wasn't difficult and didn't feel like a long walk since it's broken up with the top pool area and then down to the bottom of the falls. Even though there wasn't much of a wet season previously, there was a good amount of water flowing. There wasn't much shade around the bottom of the falls and I can imagine it could get horribly busy during high season. We had very few others there, with so much to explore. We took a picnic lunch and could have spent most of the day there, but were on a tight schedule, so left after about 3 hours.

Bell is truely one of the beautiful gorges in the Kimberley - they are all different and all worth going in and out on dirt roads to see. We stayed at the Bell Gorge Wilderness Camp - BE CAREFUL - it is not at Bell Gorge, but is a further 9 kl along the Gibb River Rd and just past the Imintji Community Shop. Many people made the mistake of going to the Gorge (dirt road and about 30kl extra travel) and they were not happy.
The Wilderness camp with it's Safari Tents is very nice, comfortable beds with a little ensuite at back of the tent. Great food Dinner and Breakfast - not cheap but if you are not camping then choices are few and this is a good choice.......The staff is friendly and very helpful and we all enjoyed it....thankyou

This was our last day in the Outback..and one of our favorites.
We arrived at the Gorge around 11AM....when a couple of tour busses pulled out...leaving only a couple other cars and us.
We really felt like we had the Gorge to ourselves.
Note #1...wear hiking boots...b/c the rocks are tough to climb. I wore hiking sandals...and got by...but wished I had my boots.
Note #2...follow along the creek...and keep your eyes open for the big rocks cross over the water to the top of the Gorge.
This is an amazing view...but keep walking.
You can either walk to the right...where there is a long stream of water and tons of places for a picnic...but better yet...
If you follow along the top of the Gorge...you can then follow down close to the Gorge at ground level...or go the opposite direction. You can follow a "rock pile" marked pathway...and find yourself at the second waterfall...with plenty of spaces to picnic and swim.
The Gorge is clean, huge and beautiful. You'll absolutely love this spot.
For camping....we tried getting a spot when we first arrived at Bell Creek. They put out the 6 areas on a pegboard at 7AM and it's first come, first serve. We went back to the pegboard close to sunset...and someone must have changed their minds...because there was an available spot when we checked again. Yeaaaaa....
We got the first secluded spot along Bell Creek, which was beautiful. We could see the campers alongside...but when things are packed at the main campsite..there's no comparison. We definitely felt like we were the only ones in the Outback that night.
As far as facilities...there's a nice, shared pit toilet...and the showers are back at the camp.
Overall...this was a great experience along the GRR...and we hope you enjoy....
