- wombatdavidHobart, Australia2,481 contributionsSave money but cramped and crowdedThis service is a good way to save money as it is cheaper than a taxi. We booked through Klook to get some cashback. The buses are quite crowded with tight seating. You will end up at Southern Cross station and we then took a tram to our hotel. On the return, the driver said we were heading to Avalon airport when we thought we were on Tullamarine bus. He thought it was hilarious that he made an error, we did not.Visited December 2022Written 4 December 2022
- Caroline LBrisbane, Australia34 contributionsSuper easy to useSkybus was so easy to organise. I purchased a return ticket at one of their machines, jumped onto a bus, and it went express to the CBD. On the way back, same thing. I'm always worried when I travel not knowing if I'm going to the right place, in the right direction, but everything was so easy. There was also free WiFi and I got to sit at the front of the double decker busThanks for the fantastic review of SkyBus! We're glad you had a great experience (the front seat is the best view!) and we hope to welcome you back on board again. - Simon DAuckland, New Zealand712 contributionsMelbourne airport to Southern Cross stationFirst time using this and value for money we couldn't really complain about to be fair. $64 for a return ticket for two from the Melbourne airport terminal to Southern Cross station in the city. No problems ordering the ticket at the machine and a full bus when we arrived, but still found room for suitcases and a seat each, just not together. 30 mins ride and no stress. Getting to the apartment we were staying at in Southbank meant a bit of a walk about 20 mins, but no hardship and we could have got a taxi or Uber probably. Looks like some of the city shuttle stops a mate told me were available have been closed (probably post Covid issues I expect). Hopefully they will be back at some stage. Getting back to the airport on a Monday morning saw a big queue (around 8:40am) which made me think we might have to grab a cab. In all honesty the queue moved really quickly and 20 mins and three buses through the station we were onboard and on our way - panic over! Well cheaper than a cab/Uber or similar from what I could see online. No hesitation in recommending and will likely use again if we get the opportunity to do so.Thanks for the detailed review! We're glad you had a good experience. Our city shuttle is currently suspended, but the Melbourne City Express will drop you at Southern Cross Station where you can take advantage of Melbourne's great PTV network. The CBD also has the Free Tram Zone in the CBD grid to get to your destination. We hope to welcome you on board the SkyBus again soon. As always hardly had to wait anytime for the bus, and ticket purchase now even easier via Kiosk. Even with the Shuttle Transfer to City hotels no longer available I will continue to use SkyBus as its very easy to hop on a tram to hotel as stop right outside the exit from Southern Cross Station. Only negative was advertised free WIFI only worked for 5-10 minutes on each journey and I was unable to reconnect 🤔Thank you for the review of your trip with SkyBus and we are glad you enjoyed the experience. - Kathy KKPort Adelaide, Australia48 contributionsAirport Train Please VictoriaFor a major city like Melbourne who call themselves the most liveable city its astounding that this is the only city that I can think of that doesnt have a direct train line to their main airport. Bring it on if it ever happens so this ancient Skybus service stops their monopoly especially for the elderly which dont have cards and apps and just want plain customer service and dont have to climb up stairs of a double decker bus to get a seat . And to not have a concession for most who need it and cant afford an Uber to the airport is not comparable to other bus services Australia wide .Thanks for the feedback, huka6767. We have seating available downstairs in our buses for those who may not be comfortable going upstairs. We've also passed the information regarding concession to the team for review. The service was easy to find, the driver was in high spirits at 7am in the morning - welcoming and friendly, the bus has usb charging ports and is a comfortable ride. To top it off the driver even took my big suitcase off the bus and left it on the path for me beside the bus at the final destination at Melbourne Airport: Highly recommend:Thanks Justine F for the great review of our Peninsula Express service! SkyBus is an airport bus service that runs between Melbourne Airport and also Avalon Airport. The service is prompt and fares are reasonable. SkyBus can be boarded at the terminus, adjacent to Southern Cross Station.

I have an expectation that the appointed provider of this service maintain a minimum level of professionalism. The embarrassing and ridiculous “Welcome to Country” public announcement falls well below standard.
This service should not be used as a platform to harangue and lecture its users with personal opinions and political ideologies.
If SkyBus persists with this broadcast I will report it to the Public Transport Ombudsman.

On top of no pension concession fare for those who have a disability, as a frequent flyer I catch skybus often and each time I am either left stranded on the bus with my walking frame unable to disembsrk or a passenger has to help me as the driver has walked off, no asking if I can use the ramp, ever. One driver stopped at Tully and just left the bus, didn't even help passengers with their bags. I may be young but I'm anything but mobile.
Pick up your game skybus. If it wasn't for the multiple transport changes with a walker and a suitcase I'd catch the train then bus instead.

Very good service, best way to travel to the city, however we were unable to hear/understand the commentary/directions from the driver on both trips to and from the airport. This is in part an accent thing, however more a location of the microphone I think ... too close (blahblahgarbleblah) or too far away (shhhhhh Melbshh, cityshhhh). All good!!

If you like riding on top of a bus turning corners at break neck speeds and running red lights (this happened to me this afternoon in the CBD) all the while being told this is not your land and about paying respect to only a small fraction of the population... this is the ride for you!
Be really nice not to be bombarded with a political guilt trip and have more choice...like a train...like most other 'world class cities'
Not impressed Skybus Melbourne

I got the SkyBus from the airport to Southern Cross station. Commendations to the driver who was really helpful. At the train station he made a point of coming to assist me with my case, as I couldn’t lift it down from the bag rack. Such a great service.

Departing Southern Cross Station, attendant Damien closed the entry rope in front of me as I was a literal second too late to show him my ticket and instead he spent the time explaining why he couldn't let my family on as the bus was leaving. Except the bus wasn't leaving and the bus had its doors open. Get over you power trip Damien. Pathetic!

After a long uncomfortable flight and 1.5 hours getting through the airport, your ears will be assaulted with a booming voice ‘welcoming’ you to “Narm *also known as Melbourne*” (lol) and asserting in an aggressive tone that “sovereignty over the land we know as Australia has never been ceded.” This is precisely what I want to hear from a service whose only function is to ferry me to and from the airport in the absence of any public transport connection like is present in every other civilised major city in the world.
Responses by Skybus to complaints about this is that it is part of their ‘reconciliation’ plan. I suggest berating customers with aggressive political preaching after the stress and annoyance of flying is likely to dispose them against the message rather than towards it. Perhaps this sort of thing helps explain why the voice refurendum is about to go down in a flaming heap.
The cost benefit of Skybus is now only marginally greater than an Uber or taxi especially if traveling with a companion. Going forward I will probably take those options purely to avoid being subjected to a sermon every time I fly.

Hi Patrick,
Thank you for writing in. We're sorry to hear that you disagree with our choice to host an Acknowledgement of Country on board as part of our function to welcome travellers into Australia. We are committed to doing everything within our sphere of influence to support reconciliation in Australia, and with thousands of people using SkyBus as part of their visit to Naarm/ Melbourne every day an Acknowledgement of Country is our way of showing respect to Traditional Owners.

Hi, I am looking to travel in a group of 4 adults and 1 child from Tullamarine airport to CBD and CBD to Avalon airport. Will the return ticket enable me to do that or do we need to book 2 one way tickets (Tullamarine Airport to CBD and CBD to Avalon) separately?
Hi Shweta, apologies for the delay in coming back to you. You will need to book one-way tickets as our Melbourne City Express and Avalon Express services are different prices due to the distance between the airports (Avalon is a lot further away). You can find tickets on our website for each service type. Thanks - SkyBus

Due to the Coronavirus outbreak with large numbers of holidays/flights being cancelled. Many people who have paid
and pre-booked are unable to travel to Melbourne and use your service.
Will you be offering a refund?
As this is a catastrophic world event that has never been seen before. Or are you just keeping there cash and quoting "booking terms &conditions "

I'm travelling to Melbourne next August. Scheduled to arrive at Avalon at 8.30 pm and would like to ride SkyBus to Victoria Station.
From the station, how about hotel transfer? We are 5 senior citizen each with a bag and hand luggage. Do we have to take another bus, taxi or what?
We are staying at Milano Serviced Apartment, Franklin Street.

It's a short walk down towards the council buildings. I'd say allow 10-15 minutes to struggle with bags. Russell St and Swanson streets cross the street. I stayed on Little Collins on the opposite side of the block to the bus stop. Have a look at the map of the CBD.

Hi Never heard of Klook. Only trouble with cheaper companies is pick up and drop off may be harder. Do your research first and if it suits your needs then go for it.
is it cheaper and faster to take the Airport Shuttle or Skybus to Spencer Outlet?

There are a few routes. Look on the Skybus website to see which suits you best. Personally the CBD route terminating/starting Southern Cross Railway station suits me best. It is express between Southern Cross (located in the main CBD area of Melbourne) and Melbourne Airport. At the airport it has two stops. The first services most flights/terminals. The second services Qantas flights, at the extreme northern end of the airport terminal.
