Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.

Very nice cocktails. Quite pricey but understandable because the views are spectacular and they don’t want people just coming up to see the views and only buying one drink. Will return again. Recommend the Lamington cocktail

Considering they charge a minimum of $50 per person, the dinks could be served with a napkin at least (especially with a drink like a martini served with olives ... what was I supposed to do with the pits?!)

The antipathetic, impatient waiters kept asking if we were done with the drinks and even when we said no, after a few minutes they still removed the glasses from the table...
Instead of enjoying the atmosphere, we were busy keeping an eye on our drinks and trying to fend off the marketing attempts that made us feel that if we did not order more and more we were unwanted

This is the worst customer service i have ever experienced. I was told over the phone a month prior to Valentine's Day that Lui Bar doesn't take reservations. Upon arrival a rude french host told us the place was booked out and all tables reserved. I then asked how this was possible and explained that I was told on the phone that Lui Bar didn't take reservations, it was then made clear to me that appartently there was a FACEBOOK event that was taking bookings for Lui Bar. I was disappointed that I wasn't made aware of this a month ago. We then waited 20 mins in the lobby waiting with a few other couples (it was Valentine's Day). My girlfriend and I were dressed very elegantly as the first time my girlfriend tried to get in she was denied entry as she was wearing jeans. We looked around the lobby and there were couples wearing sneakers and ripped jeans... what is the dress code and why is it not consistent!!?? We were then finally called up but the host harshly, shoved 4 couples into the one elevator. We were then told that we still had to wait at a STANDING table next to the bar until a seat AT THE BAR became availble to us. By that point we had had enough and had to leave. My girlfriend and I just can't believe that we were made to stand at the standing table when there were availble tables at the window, we most likely could have enjoyed a drink or two and some bites to eat in the time that they had reserved for another couple. This was an absolutely appalling experience and we will never return to Lui Bar for the bad service and organisation. Thoroughly disappointed.

This is a lovely place to watch the sun go down over the harbour. Very intimate space with limited numbers of patrons at any one time which makes it even more special. We arrived at the reception desk (also for Vue de Monde Restaurant) around 7pm taking our chances at getting in without a booking. We were greeted by two very polite staff who took our names and showed us to the ground floor waiting area letting us know it would be about 20 minutes before there would be a spot upstairs. Luckily we only waited about 5 minutes before we were shown to the lift. Lui bar staff greet you by name and show you to your seat, bar stools in our case until a window seat became available, the staff were lovely and they were very attentive so our drinks were always filled. If you forget to ask at reception, double check with the bar staff to make sure you can go on the list for a window seat, in the meantime the only seats are uncomfortable stools at the bar. There are couches away from the windows which can also be booked for slightly larger groups. The drinks menu is huge and on the bar menu is a few savoury and sweet bites. We stayed for around two hours sipping Prosecco and whisky and loved the chocolate soufflé and nutella donuts. There is a semi protected glass walled outdoor area in addition to the bar area if you want to wander around. The amenities are cleverly designed and worth a look too.

TIPS: Recommend booking ahead and book a window seat. Be on time.
If you walk up, make sure you ask for a window seat when checking in at reception.

We waited 20mins in a reception area before being allowed to go up to bar. Once we got to the bar we was seated at the bar on a stool and put on a waiting list for a seat by the windows. (There was about 20 stools available at the bar yet people are made to wait downstairs) We was asked 5 times what we wanted to order I felt under pressure to order so I asked for a pall mall $26 cocktail (the drink was vile it contained whisky) The staff could tell I wasn’t enjoying the drink they said I could buy another drink. We was in the bar for about 30mins and noticed a few tables had RESERVED on yet the website said they don’t take reservations. So we decided to sit at this unattended table as the bar stools are uncomfortable. We could over hear staff talking about people behind there backs. After 10mins at the ‘reserved’ table we was told too move back to the bar. I was not impressed with the way we was spoken to I asked for the bill and we left and will not return.

Late night cocktail..this is the place. There was a 30 minute wait to get in on a Saturday night but well worth it. Really cool place to visit and hang out. Great drinks on offer.
