Wattle Park

About
Wattle Park is a popular metropolitan park that has a blend of historic buildings, picnic grounds, recreational facilities and natural bush spread over 55 hectares. Huge gum trees, wattles, seasonal wildflowers and ponds are all significant features. Wattle Park is an excellent location for a variety of activities from jogging to bird watching, golf to cricket. Meet for a picnic or barbecue and in the warmer months you may see the Melbourne Tramways Band playing on a Sunday afternoon. The beautiful historic Wattle Park Chalet, a quaint European-style establishment built in 1928. The Chalet, popular for functions, is set among exotic trees and sweeping lawns. For a great escape within the suburbs, this is the place to visit. Despite the urban surroundings of Wattle Park, there's also a surprising diversity of flora and fauna within its boundaries. Children can even enjoy being a tram conductor in one of the old trams. The nine hole public golf course is a lovely setting to practice your swing. There are also three tennis courts. Visit the filtration ponds alongside Damper Creek and see ducks and frogs amongst the native rushes. Immerse yourself in the history and nature of the park. Wattle Park is on Riversdale Rd Burwood. Vehicle access is from Riversdale Rd. Enter by foot from Riversdale Rd, Warrigal Rd, Patterson Ave or Elgar Rd. Tram 70 stops near the park entrance. The toilets and most paths in the park are accessible for visitors with limited mobility.

As a young schoolboy, I had to do cross country running in Wattle Park. To be honest, this experience traumatised me because let’s just say, I’ve never been the best runner! Anyway, I decided to take my kids here the other day for an after school hang out with Dad, making it the first time I had been back to the park since my school days. The playground has changed since I was last there and frankly it looks amazing. My kids had an absolute blast playing there and I will definitely take them back. We also explored some of the trails at Wattle Park which was very fun because it made my children feel like adventurers (in the own words), and allowed me to get them out of the house for a little bit (it can be hard to get them of their devices after school). The nature and scenery was beautiful, but I have to be honest…I got lost on our little bushwalk. As embarrassing as it is, I also believe that this could prove to be a danger to some people such as the elderly as the long trails can become confusing and cause people to lose their orientation. The park is very unique for having these trails, however, and I think it would benefit from having a couple maps or signs around to let people know where they are. Overall this experience was incredibly fun and I am so glad that I decided to revisit the park after my school days. Will definitely be coming back with family many more times!

Formerly a day-trip destination for the tram in the early days of Melbourne, Wattle Park is a large multi-use park. For walkers/joggers, it has gravel and dirt tracks through bushland preserve. For kids, it has two old trams and an adventure playground. It has an oval, Chalet and picnic facilities, and adjoins a small public golf course. Good destination for a walk and to let the kids off the leash for a couple of hours.

As the title may suggest, Wattle Park is just another park. I live in Melbourne myself and live all of 1km from Wattle Park. When I first saw that Wattle Park was on the list of places to go in Melbourne I was horrified. I run my dog there! The park is quite nice however with lots of natural Aussie foliage and fauna. However, by cab, the park is around 30 mins from the city and by train it is 45 mins. Not worth the visit to be honest. But if you are really into seeing native foliage and fauna then it is probably worth a visit.

I will rate it 4 if I live there! It has everything on a small scale. There is a two km cycling/walking track suitable for wheelchairs. I can squeeze 6 km walk out of it if I go through the bushwalking tracks. Nice gentle grade for those who want a quiet and small park so they won't get lost. I have even met a lady using this park to prepare her next 550km Camino walk. She has done 200km. She likes the gradient of the park and she just walk a few rounds. Very gentle 15 degrees gradient in some areas, much easier than One Tree Hill of the Dandenong's. there is even a tram playground for children, picnic spot, golf club, cafe, function venue which needs to be booked, historical marker to acknowledge those who fought in the war... Nice little place! For those who hate driving, 903 bus and Tram 70 comes here!! Hope it helps you to enjoy the place!

Wattle Park was originally established by the then Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board, which is now privatised.

It is a very large park about 16 kilometres east of Melbourne, and is easily reached by Yarra Trams' Route 70 tram which leaves from Melbourne's Docklands and Flinders Street: a Zone 1 trip. An alternative is to take a Connex suburban train to Box Hill station and then a bus, but this requires a Zone 1 and 2 ticket as Box Hill station is (just) in Zone 2.

Once a month (but not all the year), the Tramways Band play on Sunday afternoons.

The indigenous flora is particularly outstanding. A quiet, peaceful natural haven in a city of 3.7 million people.

Awesome park for a walk on a sunny day. Old trams near the park good to see how they were built and to sit and relax inside and think about how they drive them back in the day. Plenty of shade and bbqs and lots of seats around the track to rest if need be.

As I live near to Wattle Park, I walk the perimeter frequently with my dog. It is Australian native parkland with a couple of frog filled billabongs and plenty of birds. There's an oval on top of the hill which is fantastic for flying kites, alongside a Golf Course with a popular kiosk. The playground is like a timber fort that caters for any aged child, and there are two old Melbourne Trams poised near the playground for closer examination. There are two free gas barbeques and picnic tables, ample parking, and it is on the 70 tram route to add to the kids pleasure!

It is just a tram ride from Melbourne central. Have had good experiences watching the children play in the old tram. I live 200kms from the CBD and this is a good place to take a break and sandwich

My grandmother's memorial service in the chapel here was stunning, even in June. The sun shone in through the windows and the room was so well decorated.
