Working in a team of 2-6 people, you have 70 minutes to unravel the mystery of a hidden room, working together to solve a variety of quirky and inventive puzzles to escape. We have three rooms available - Melbourne's original Escape Room, Mine Escape , and Kellar's Magic Emporium. We can't give away too many secrets here, but to get an idea of what to expect you can check out our website for reviews and articles by Broadsheet, Timeout, The Age, and others, as well as features by SBS, Channel 10, ABC radio, and Fox FM (warning: may contain some spoilers!) Bookings are essential and can be made through our website. Please note we are a small independent business that is not affiliated with any of the Escape Room franchises operating in Melbourne, however we are happy to try and accommodate corporate bookings and larger groups where we can. Please feel free to contact us via email if you have any questions about availability, bookings, or the rooms themselves.

Neighbourhood: South Melbourne
South Melbourne hosts the city’s oldest continuous market, founded in 1867. Rows of neatly arranged fruit, vegetables and flowers splash yellows, greens and reds along the entire perimeter, where the whole neighbourhood gathers for Saturday feasts. Inside the hall, shoppers hover over the mouth-watering displays of delicatessens and specialty food shops. Further in, a bazaar full of giftware, clothing, and kitchen utensils completes the scene. Take a break to walk the wide and shady streets and stroll along the Victorian-era heritage terrace houses. But return to the market in time for some paella, simmering in three large frypans on the footpath and served straight onto your plate.

We went to the Original Room to see how it all started. The place where the room is located was amazing, it really is a place that looks like an old, abandoned cottage. Our Game Master was very friendly and helpful. As for the puzzles themselves, not all of them were intuitive for us, we would not really describe the room as "easy", although we managed to escape. The room is also a bit worn, some elements do not work, some require force to open/activate, which is counter-intuitive. Overall a good impression, but the room did not encourage us to visit other ERM ones.

We came back to do Fractured after having completed their other rooms. The concept is very cool - you’re in the mind of a coma victim. Staff are very friendly and enthusiastic. The decor and props are perfectly done and very authentic. Puzzles are unique and engaging (not just locks and combinations!)
Unfortunately, despite the great room, we had a negative experience on the day. Our experience was cut short by an inattentive game master and a puzzle that didn’t work. The way this room is designed makes it possible to end much earlier than what you pay for if you fall behind. We think this is a huge flaw that should be fixed for an otherwise 5/5 room.
However, they did apologise and issue a refund. We will definitely be back if this company adds new rooms in future as they’re one of the best in Melbourne.

We are reasonably intermediate escapists (~15 rooms under our belt). We did Kellars magic emporium. The rooms puzzles were great! It was linear and required logical thinking to solve the puzzles.
The two of us finished the room in about 50 of the allotted 70mins so if you are a seasoned escape room-er you may want to try Fractured instead.
In saying that we did love this room as it had a lot of cool and different elements we had not seen before.
Post the escape the staff were happy to have a good chat about the room which doesn’t always happen so that was great as well.
Definitely recommend.

We did mine escape and fractured. I prefer fractured, it was a bit longer and had some novelty tasks which were enjoyable to do. The atmosphere within the rooms is pretty good and it’s a bit cheaper than other escape rooms in Melbourne.

Average escape room, below average staff.
We did the magicians room, some interesting puzzles and some mundane the experience was mostly good. The problem was the staff, they seemed bored and uninterested; more annoying than this though was the fact that the female staff member kept interrupting our deducing to tell us the answer to the puzzle we were working on or the previous puzzle which we had already passed. Not sure if they have cameras since it was clear we had passed the thing she was telling us about. We didn’t ask for clues please don’t give them unless we’re running out of time.
I figured we must be behind schedule but no, we finished with approx 20-30 mins left, think they were trying to hurry us along so they could leave. Ruined the whole experience.

We did "Fractured" and really did not enjoy the experience at all. Promoted as a "difficult" room, it just didn't create an enjoyable experience for us, the puzzles were just obscure and not logical or deductable in our opinion.
We have done meany escape rooms, and got out on time the last six occasions, so its not as though we don't know how to drive puzzles or escape rooms.
We left 15 mins before time because we just wanted to get out of the place.

We did Mine Escape and were underwhelmed. Nice puzzels etc. but all a bit tired (host had to pop in to stick something up, colours faded etc) the description included smoke and flashing lights -and we had neither. Also dragged a bit (we're novice) and repeatedly asking for tips/direction when stuck, but a few times had no reply so just searching when already stuck. We were in for more like 90 mins - appreciated being able to escape but dragged. We were 5 people (2 kids). Maybe better fun with 2-3?

We had the best time! Exceeded our expectations. Chris was fantastic - he gave us every opportunity to solve things ourselves before pointing us in the right direction. Was our first escape room experience and hopefully won't be our last. Awesome!!!

Went here with my partner and it was a little weird I knew it was in Flemington but didn't get the address until I booked (you cant just turn up to this place). The guy Sam was really nice but I found the whole place a bit creepy and wouldn't recommend it to travellers. Its a bit out of the way and they only had one room to do although they said they were building another one closer to the city which will be better.

Hi Watto,
Sorry to hear you didn't enjoy your experience. While we don't set out to make anything creepy, the idea is that you're solving a mystery, so we've tried to make as much of the experience in line with that as we can - having a sense of atmosphere is something that we feel is really important (and lacking in a lot of the other escape rooms out there).
It's been something that most people seem to enjoy, but we can understand that if you're from out of town and unfamiliar to the concept of an escape room it might be a bit of a surprise! The next room we're opening is more about racing to beat the clock than solving a mystery, so might be more your style. It's also closer to the city, and a lot easier to get to if you're coming from the southern or southeastern suburbs.
We'd be very interested to know how we could have improved things on the day (or if anything specific went wrong), but we're unsure from your review when you came and don't have a record of anyone with a similar name in our booking system. If there's any other feedback you could give us we'd appreciate it - you can contact us at escaperoommelbourne@outlook.com.
Regards,
Ali

A group of 4 of us did the indoor/outdoor escape room and i must say it's the most unique escape room i've ever done. The fact you start in a park and not a room is exciting, then the way they start the escape room just makes it an experience! I won't give too much away as I feel it's better left going into this knowing nothing about it, but highly recommend if you're a fan of escape rooms to give this a try. It's between medium-hard in difficulty, the puzzles are quite unique and i guarantee you won't find another escape room like this in Melbourne. Would do it again if i didn't already know the answers to the puzzles!

I'm looking for something fun and active to do for a second date, that isn't dinner and drinks. Would this be a good option, or is it better suited to bigger groups?
Written 9 September 2018
If you’re both into puzzles and games, then yes!! This would be an amazing date idea.
If she’s a basic girl who doesn’t really enjoy much beyond drinking, movies, and dancing... then try something else.

That is a good question. As far as I can recollect, I believe there was a couple of steps when entering the building. However, I believe it is not wheelchair friendly - not the place we have been to. It is quite narrow and the rooms are quite small. The person in the wheelchair would not enjoy it because he or she would not be able to join in as much fun because of the limited space and their interaction (not all) would also be limited as well. That's my opinion, perhaps if you ask the people who run the business, they may suggest otherwise? I hope this helps.

I'm thinking for eight people, what would the cost be?

Hi Vivian , it was $35 per person , and I agree with John they are small rooms we had 4 people . Maybe you could split the group and do 2 different escape rooms at the Same time

For a group of 10 you'd need to book two rooms - we usually have a maximum of between 4 and 6, depending on the room (as Kezzles noted, anything more than that gets a bit cramped!). Feel free to send us an email if you have any questions about which room(s) to book :)

Hi I'll be in Melbourne in a couple of weeks, with my 10 year old grandson to visit my daughter. Is the Escape Room experience appropriate for children too? I think it sounds right up our ally :) Thanks looking forward to hearing from you.

Written 2 April 2015
Hi Leonie - Vascariz pretty much covered it for us (thanks!), though I just wanted to add that of our other two rooms, we usually recommend the original escape room in Flemington as it's slightly easier and younger kids seem to really enjoy it. Our newest room (Kellar's Magic Emporium) does have a few creepy elements so may be less appropriate.
Also, we don't officially offer a child rate, but for a 10-year old we're happy to arrange a discount - just send us an email before you book :)
Written 2 April 2015
how do you get there from the CBD by public transport - is one room easier than the other to get to this way?
Written 7 January 2015
South Melbourne is probably slightly easier as it's more central and there are a couple of different options to get there - from the city it's a short tram ride on the number 12 (from Collins street), the number 55 (from William street), or the number 1 (from Swanston street). Alternatively, it's only a 20 minute walk from Flinders street station, which can be faster than the tram if there's heavy traffic.
Flemington is a little bit further out - you can catch a train to Newmarket station (around 10-15 minutes from Flinders street station), or the number 59 tram from Elizabeth street. If you're in the north of the CBD it would probably be a comparable amount of time as getting to South Melbourne.
Hope that helps, feel free to send us an email if you have any other questions :)
