Melbourne Central is a diverse shopping and dining destination that invites you to keep exploring.

Bringing together more than 300 retailers over five levels, Melbourne Central is home to an absorbing range of Australian and international fashion brands from Gorman, Alannah Hill, Crumpler to Vans and Nique. Take a sugar break at Cupcake Central, a beauty break at Mecca Maxima or an indulgent time-out at Self Centred Medi Spa.

The buzz continues after dark, whether you are lurking in Knox Lane with its graffiti by Melbourne's infamous DABS and MYLA, or basking beneath a screen in the Hoyts Lux Cinema. Spanning two city blocks, the centre boasts several unique architectural features including the giant Marionette Watch hanging in Shot Tower Square, famous for its hourly rendition of the Australian anthem 'Waltzing Matilda'. The square is named after the historic Coops Shot Tower a bullet-making facility built in 1889. Today, the brick shot tower stands proudly in its original place, protected by a modern twist: the magnificent Glass Cone, designed in the '80s by Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa. While it floods the centre with natural light, the Glass Cone's design also makes it one of Melbourne's most recognisable landmarks.

Located atop the City Loop Melbourne Central train station and can be found on the iconic free city circle tram route. Melbourne Central boasts 822 car parks making it the perfect base for Melbourne city excursions. The five-star-rated parents' retreat offers a sanctuary for families, while The Little Library free book exchange provide spaces for pause and escape from the city's frenetic buzz. Whatever brings you to Melbourne, be it shopping, exploring, lunch, brunch or simply an unexpected adventure, it is all waiting between Lonsdale and La Trobe.

Or to go behind the scenes book a place on Melbourne Central's Unlocked Tour which leads visitors around hidden nooks, rarely-seen vantage points and secret rooftops.

Bernadette Alibrando can also tell you the tales of Melbourne Central's huge range of artworks in the Walk to Art Tours.

A great atmosphere which is vibrant and buzzing. A great array of food, drink, retail and entertainment. From fitness to movies this destination has everything. Easy to access on public transport sitting on top of the trains, with teams out front and just a short stroll from town centre. The tower is a dominating piece of art, especially set against... A great place to wander with a variety of shops over numerous levels. Services for clothing repairs and adjustments, haircuts, variety shops and retail outlets. The access can be gained from every direction and rail station located in lower level makes for easy transfer from city. Movie theatres are in upper levels with good seating and really good leg room.... More

Dear Madam/Sir, RE: Melbourne Central is predominantly a connectivity point for commuters. Also plenty of shopping activity is possible here with busy shops and cafes. Most high street retailers have an outlet and lingers have their stalls set up in most places through out the mall. The mall is an old converted factory and the reminiscences are still visible. The... More

Went to Melbourne Central with the family on first day of holiday over from NZ. Great food court with many different selections. Great choice of shops and just loved the Australia clock which is really fun to watch. Lovely to see the old Shot Factory incorporated in a modern way.

Best mall with multiple stores and HOYTS theatre. Try cuisines in Food court. You can spend whole day around City and come back to mall, watch movie and catch train at Central station.

Melbourne Central is a mall with everything you need and more. There are plenty of stores with something to suit everyone, as well as a large supermarket and decent food court. It also has a stunning dome glass roof. Melbourne Central has plenty of toilet facilities, escalators and elevators for convenience and easy access. However, it can be difficult to... More

Staying in Central Business District

Neighbourhood Profile
Central Business District
Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.
