The area
Neighbourhood: South Melbourne
South Melbourne hosts the city’s oldest continuous market, founded in 1867. Rows of neatly arranged fruit, vegetables and flowers splash yellows, greens and reds along the entire perimeter, where the whole neighbourhood gathers for Saturday feasts. Inside the hall, shoppers hover over the mouth-watering displays of delicatessens and specialty food shops. Further in, a bazaar full of giftware, clothing, and kitchen utensils completes the scene. Take a break to walk the wide and shady streets and stroll along the Victorian-era heritage terrace houses. But return to the market in time for some paella, simmering in three large frypans on the footpath and served straight onto your plate.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Monet's Garden exhibition was part of the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) Winter Masterpieces exhibition in 2013. It has now moved on. The exhibition was very popular, giving an insight into how this great impressionist painter worked.

A place I love to share with visitors to Melbourne. Food and service are always excellent, and even in winter, the view of the gardens through the windowed walls gives a special lift to the spirits.

I like art and take an interest but am not an expert or snob. This is a fantastic exhibition that suited us as novices but educated us into his breadth of skills and some further insights to his life story. Some of his early works remind me of Turners misty landscapes. Others look more like modern abstracts. And his classics have evolved from these elements to what many of know as the Monet style. We bought a couple of prints as memories.
PS this is just as good as the orangerie (sp) in Paris but a lot closer.

In order to get to this garden, you have to go back behind the big hall. It's a nice place to sit, but it's not worth going to unless there is an exhibition out there.

I had always loved his works but was amazed by the variety and his 'modern art' periods. All his paintings have a special serenity and are un mistakenly his style no matter how varied. We finished a wonderful Friday evening with dinner upstairs. A wonderful night and we recommend it to everyone with even a passing interest in art.

This exhibition is a must see if you are a fan of Impressionist Art. The paintings are well presented with an accompanying description of each. There were also other panels of information about the Impressionist movement, Monet's personal life and how WW 1 influenced his paintings. In later life he suffered with cataracts. This affected his perception of colour. It was interesting to see his paintings before and after surgery. The final room was a great movie of his beloved garden at Giverny, which was a great inspiration for his Art.
