As a Melbourne local moving overseas with work, I did this tour as my final homage to this beautiful city after living here 8 years. Monique’s Foodie tour did not disappoint....she is extremely knowledgeable, professional and relaxed and took me to places I didn’t know existed in the rabbit warren of beautiful laneways that define the Melbourne CBD. Great samplings from some of Melbourne’s wonderful multi-cultural food and beverage scene, and a great show-casing of the city’s architecture and hidden gems, along with the stories attached to them. This is a highly recommended tour for both visitors and locals alike!

Our guide was quite informative and we learned interesting facts about Melbourne (history, art, architecture) and explored cool lanes and arcades. I try and do a food tour in each new place I visit and unlike other food tours I've done this one is mainly light bites of speciality/artisanal items rather that heavier tastings of different types of cuisine. Dumplings are the heartiest item, the rest of the tour featured small samples of local treats such as coffee, olive oil, honey. Not bad or good, just something to know going in.

I am torn as I write this because, it is advertised as a food tour, but in actuality it is a snapshot into Melbourne art, history, shopping, ambiance with a bit of food. I am glad I did it because we did learn a lot, saw architecture and gained insight into Melbourne as a culture and city along with getting suggestions on other things to do in the city. BUT, the food piece was not as billed. Perhaps it is important to note that we did not have lunch beforehand. The Chinese dumplings were great and filling, but then everything else was samples from the various shops, nothing set up for the group except for the coffee(we had to wait about 20 minutes for our coffees) and wine at the very end. It was different than food tours we have done in other cities whereby we were expected with tables set and a planned menu item. Again, it is not that this was”not good,” but not really a “food” tour. Monique knows and loves Melbourne and as such is a fantastic resource for a traveler.

Three of us went on the Dumpling Tour and were quite disappointed. We thought it offered very poor value for money. Perhaps it better suited to tourists rather than locals? As we live in Melbourne and enjoy dumplings we had already visited 2 of the 4 restuarants we stopped at. Anyone who enjoys dumplings know they are very good value. For instance a serve of Xiao Long Bao would generally cost less than $10 for a serve. We probably ate on average possibly a serve or perhaps a serve and a half at most of dumplings on the tour. Perhaps a generous estimation, around $15 of food. We paid $65 per head to do the tour and had to pay extra for any drinks consumed. As such we paid $50 each ($150 for the 3 of us) to be guided around. For $195 the 3 of us could have eaten ourselves silly at probably 4 or 5 dumpling restaurants !

FYI some very good dumpling restuarants were not included on the tour. Hu Tong in Market Lane and Shandong Ma Ma in Midcity Arcade are both up there with the best of them.

Anyway the guide tried hard but for me you would be far better off Googling top dumpling restaurants in Melbourne, picking one and having a feast for probably $15 per head.

Hi - I'm sorry you didn't find value for money on the Dumpling Discovery walk. I'd love the opportunity to address some of your concerns. Your focus seems to be on the volume of food you eat. It's true that most people eat a serve (about 12) dumplings over the course of the night. We think that's reasonable, as this is not an 'all-you-can-eat' experience, but most people leave feeling pretty satisfied with the volume of food. We really think that it's more about sharing a night out in Melbourne, while we share food. You mentioned that you knew 2 of the venues - that also means you learnt about 2 new venues, which I hope you liked enough to return to. With regards to your others favourites, we're not able to visit either HuTong or ShangDong Mama due to their bookings policies. It's true they are good dumplings! Our collection of 4 venues is by no means exhaustive, but they are a mix of city favorites and perhaps a couple of lesser known venues you might like to return to another time. It's true that you could have taken yourself on a dumpling walk for less money. You would not have had the benefit of your guide or sharing the experience with others in your group. There are some walking tours in Melbourne (and elsewhere!) that do not include any samples at all! So many people find value in the experience itself. We have a mix of locals and tourists come along and generally we have very good feedback and many return visits to our other walks as well. If you have any further queries, please call. food was pretty poor on the whole and you were dragged through some shops that had not much to do with food which was either poor programming or they were paid to take you there.

HI folks - We're really sorry that you didn't enjoy your experience with us. We can assure your that we do not receive any payment whatsoever for showing you around our favorite stores. We include a couple of 'non food' stores as we love to showcase local independent stores that tell a story about the city. 1 store is to showcase local independent fashion design scene and 1 store is to showcase locally made gifts, including a wide range of foods. This also happens to be a great way to spend a few minutes browsing while your coffee is being made. No one is obligated to enter either of the stores and we do not receive a kickback from either of them. We're also sad that you didn't enjoy the food we offered. Next time you're in Melbourne, maybe we can match you with some venues better suited to your tastes. Thank, Monique

We set off on foot to visit locations around Fitzroy that appeared in the t.v show 'Offspring'. Our guide Monique had plenty of interesting insights to not only the show, but Fitzroy as well. We stopped at the Union hotel for a drink and enjoyed the little back streets for some little surprises.
If you love 'Offspring' and enjoy walking, this is the tour for you.
Thanks to Monique for the great pics.

What a sensational tour around some of Melbournes popular hot spots. Our tour guide Monique was extremely knowledgeable about the history of Melbourne’s laneways, buildings and hidden bars. We were shown where to find a good coffee and superb food, to-die-for chocolates, desserts, honeys and teas. All made with move from Melbournes finest locals. Do yourselves a favour and book this tour. We too away with us a taste of what this fabulous city has to offer. Food, fashion, history, a great coffee, ‘rockn’ bars, wonderful conversations and meeting new people. Thank you Monique for looking after us in great style!!!!

What a treat it was for our group to spend a few hours walking the streets with Monique. From amazing coffee, to honey, to meat pies and even a vegemite sandwich - she was first rate! Interesting, knowledgeable, affable and well spoken. Keep doing the great work doing. We will definitely be bringing a group back and would not miss this experience.

The tour guide makes the trip and lucky for us, Monique made the day for us.
Beyond the food (which was wonderful) we learned Melbourne's history and culture along the way and in a style that makes it hard to forget. Towards the end, Monique told us we had really stayed in a 2 block square area (with dozen of twist and turns) and I was floored.
The food was great, from the meat pies to our honey and candy stops. Foodie tours are a bit pricey, but no regrets here!

We loved this tour! Being black coffee enthusiasts we wanted to learn more about how coffee is made and more about the history of coffee in our city and boy did we get that education and more! Monique is a walking coffee encyclopaedia and answered all our questions whilst regaling us with great stories about 'ye olde' Melbourne and the evolution of the Melbourne coffee culture. We highly recommend this tour!
