Lightning Ridge Opal Mines has everything you wanted to know about Opals from the man who dug the holes, found the opals, and brought them to Melbourne. Nick has met many people over his years and his presentation skills were amazing. he showed us how to spot an opal, how to grind them into a piece of art and then... More

Hidden gem! Free lessons on opals, beautiful opals and opal jewelry, all price ranges. Nicholas is a treasure who loves his craft and business. He is a very sharing person and has a small room containing several native creature specimens. Clean shop. Great to work with all personnel. I will return to this place if I ever get back to... Set foot and walked sevetal blocks from Crown Plaza Hotel down to Elizabeth Street to be greeted by Atheka, the daughter of the owner was very patient for a brief Opal Lessons 101. She showed me how the precious stones were carved from rocks. Also part of the lesson was how doublets and triplets are made. Likewise she also taught... More

Hi Daniel. Thank you so much for your comprehensive review. I remember you well, and thank you for your patience on what was a very hectic morning. I'm so pleased that you learned a lot from your Opal 101! We'd love to see the finished piece of jewellery if you get it made. Thanks again. More

I wanted to buy my niece a special 18th bday/high school graduation present while I'm here in Melbourne on business -- and naturally I thought opal jewelry would be perfect. After browsing in a few jewelry stores -- it quickly became apparent I had no idea what I was doing and would likely be ripped off. I found Lightening Ridge... More

Nice family owned shop with excellent demos and fair prices for the opals. Ended up with an excellent boulder opal. The place is hard to locate but call and they will happily guide you in.

Thanks for the great review. We're still working on our signage and street visibility, so hopefully soon it won't be so much of a puzzle to find us! Enjoy your gorgeous opal and thanks again. More

My husband and I stopped in the Lightning Ridge Opal Mine Store on Elizabeth Street to escape the rain. Our visit started with a review of how opals are formed, mined and brought to market. We even got to see the polishing of an opal. After the lesson in mining, cutting and polishing we met the Blue Tongued Lizard that... More

They definitely know their opals here. More than that, they are just very nice human beings. They create a memorable experience whether you buy or not; there is no pressure to buy. It's a great place to learn about Australian opals, where they come from, and how they are valued. And thanks for the restaurant recommendation! :-)

Just purchased an opal from this wonderful shop located on Elizabeth Street in Melbourne. Attica, our salesperson, explained in detail how opals are mined and the different types. There was no pressure to buy, which we really appreciated. Ativan also showed us some blue-tongued lizards. This is a gem of a shop and highly recommend.

Staying in Central Business District

Neighbourhood Profile
Central Business District
Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.
