About
The landmark Regent Theatre holds a key part in our city’s history since opening as a grand picture palace in 1929. Having survived a fire, a flood, 20 years in darkness and many threats of demolition, the venue reopened in August 1996, meticulously refurbished and returned to its breathtaking former glory.Today it stands more lavish and grand than ever and continues to host some of the world’s most renowned theatre productions.

Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.

The Regent Theatre was a grand picture palace in 1929. Having survived fires, floods, and many threats of demolition it was renovated and reopened in August 1996. Im so glad that this building was preserved for future generations to enjoy.

It looks great at night with the Moulin Rougue light display.

We will be returning next month to see the Moulin Rouge show.

First time at the Regent theatre and well absolutely stunning from entering the theatre until departure not to mention the Moulin Rouge was amazing. The seats and access were super comfortable and I can’t fault the whole experience. Absolutely recommend the Moulin Rouge and catching a show at the Regent theatre.

Visited the Regent to see Moulin Rouge, highly recommend this show, so full of energy, great music and costumes. Thankfully, the constructions unions slapped a green ban on the theatre many years ago when it was to be knocked down. Now it has been restored for all to enjoy. It is stunning, plenty of leg room in the seats. Great sound. A proud asset for all Melbournians.

We came here for the show moulin rouge. I really do feel for the theatre industry these past 2 years. It must have been so difficult. All the staff seemed genuinely happy to be back working which was great to see.

The theatre itself has been transformed with red velvet. Very classy. The seats we had (mid stalls) were great and super comfy for such a long show.

And the performance. Well I don’t want to give too much away, but to stay it was incredible. You must go see it!

The first show that my wife and I watched in this theatre was "Fiddler on The Roof" during the 1990's.

It was a fantastic show starring Topol, who was also the lead actor in the movie production.

Currently showing in this theatre is "Moulin Rouge", a very colourful extravanganza.

The Regent Theatre has been closed during the covid lockdown but is now reopening with a season of the Tony Award-winning musical Moulin Rouge. The Regent Theatre is in Collins St, in the heart of Melbourne's financial district. The Regent opened as a grand picture palace in 1929, then it was redecorated and reopened in 1996 as a venue for musical theatre. The lobby is Gothic-style and the interior is palatial, with ornate decorations. The Regent Theatre is a marvelous setting for this opulent musical that celebrates life in late 19th century Paris.

I went here by myself to see War Horse. It’s an old theater. They serve beer and wine and hard drinks inside. The layout is 2 floors. Quite easy to see. Thankfully I had a end seat so I had a full view. The seats were comfortable. Good acting. You cab bring your own drinks inside, they don’t check. It was a good show.

This theatre is one of the most elaborate and sumptuous of the palace style interiors that dominated the 1920s cinemas designs in Australia. It is Spanish Baroque and medieval style with a huge auditorium with a gigantic crystal chandelier. It is the largest of the 1920s picture palaces in Australia. It was once part of the Hoyts cinema chain. It was so loved by the public that the government lifted post war building when a fire in 1945 destroyed its auditorium. The Regent remained vacant from 1970 to 1995 when debate raged whether it should be demolished and union bans prevented the demolition. It re opened in 1996 after refurbishment. Today it is more lavish and grand than ever, but while COVID 19 is with us it is temporarily closed. It is National Trust classified

Beautiful old theatre full of character and old world charm. Comfortable seating. Friendly & helpful staff with the usual expected wait for bar service etc when dealing with larger crowds. The show itself was excellent and acoustics perfect!
