Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Sir Ian Potter was a successful stock-broker who spent his considerable fortune as a patron of the arts. The Ian Potter Museum of Art was founded in 1972, and is now housed in this award-winning building. It is the University of Melbourne's primary art gallery. The Potter is the largest university-based museum in Australia. You may have to book in advance. It's easy to find, in fronts Swanston Street, on the University campus. The Potter is often surprising, exhibits range from indigenous art to contemporary displays.

The pandemic lock down took away a lot but now as we slowly reopen it is reassuring to know that art & culture is alive and strong. You need to book your time slot but it is an easy process. The gallery was not crowded and it was delightful to see so many youngsters enjoying this great space. I particularly enjoyed the Tiwi exhibition, the Durand exhibition and the Top2020 art display. Please visit.

Went looking for specific works and discovered much more. A well organized collection of both Australian and international artists.

Took the free guided tour at 1pm today. #Michael, our retired doctor of a guide, is outstanding. He kept our group of 6 interested, intrigued, informed and entertained throughout the entire 1 hour and a bit. We saw and learnt so much. Even my husband who dreads art galleries found the experience enjoyable. Kudos to #Michael - you are a gem of a storyteller. Bless you. Highly recommended.

This museum is located on Swanson Street , in the heart of University land. Although it bears the name Ian Potter, it is a much smaller and modern version of the other museum. It has continuing changing displays, on my visit it was showcasing the work of Clement Meadmore, one of Australian designer who reached international fame. It is only worth visiting this museum if there is a particular exhibition you are interested in.

When we visited in July there was small exhibit on glass art forms with examples and descriptions of making pieces through the ages. It was interesting and worth you time if you have done all the other major galleries.

It's worth popping in on every trip to Melbourne as the displays are always changing. On this trip there was a great display on art related to unionism and also interesting displays on glass and eavesdropping.

I stopped by to view the exhibits on Trade Unionism, especially with reference to Australia. The videos of longshoremens' strikes and hardship endured by workers made me realize how important Workplace Health and Safety has become.
