Spring weather is perfect for exploring Botanic Gardens
This glorious spring weather is perfect for exploring Melbourne's Botanic Gardens. The flowers are blooming -- the tulips are spectacular. The directions make it easy to work out which way to walk. Amongst the highlights are the Floral Clock and the Pioneer Women's Memorial Garden, a sunken area with an abundance of blooms. The striking Queen Victoria Memorial provides an unmatched outlook over the City of Melbourne.
Thank you for taking the time to post this review. We are pleased that you enjoyed your visit to the Royal Botanic Gardens and thank you for sharing your highlights.

    An extraordinary garden
These extraordinary gardens are one of the prime must see things in Melbourne. The site is beautiful and the range of plants and their siting and presentation is exceptional. We simply did a self directed early Spring tour here this morning. We just got a free map from the entrance and spent the most pleasant few hours wandering around and taking in the sights, sounds and smells. All we wanted to do was spend more time and enjoy the inspiring surroundings. My favourite areas were around the beautiful lake especially the various bamboo varieties and some of the shade plants. But, there are so many other beautiful areas here including the dry areas. We made a promise to each other on leaving this amazing garden. One day we’ll stay at a nearby hotel so we can make several trips to this special place and experience the garden at different times including early morning and early evening. Don’t miss this place. It is truly inspiring
Thank you for taking the time to post this review and your spectacular photos of the lake. We are pleased that you enjoyed your visit. Our amazing team of botanists, horticulturalists, arborists, and others do incredible work to keep the Royal Botanic Gardens looking beautiful. We look forward to you visiting again in the future.

    Guided Walking Tour
We had only a day in Melbourne after flying in for a concert and booked this introductory afternoon tour on the official website. Though it was a rainy day, our guide Marie was very enthusiastic and first gave us a history of the gardens and it’s early directors before showing us the highlights in the gardens including the various themed areas, explaining how the storm water is cleaned before being used for the plants and the more interesting specimens. It was an excellent introduction to the vast gardens and its many treasures. Definitely go for this!
Hi Edwin, We are thrilled to hear you had such a wonderful time on the Free Guided Walk. Our amazing volunteer guide Marie is always excited to share her knowledge and love of the gardens. We are so glad you had such a positive, informative experience. We hope you enjoyed the rest of your tip to Melbourne and hope to welcome you back to the gardens soon! :)

Harp Meditation in the Melbourne Botanical Gardens
The generous harpist Michael Johnson led a wonderfully therapeutic meditation session accompanied by his evocative music. This took place in the arid garden and was backdropped by birdsong as the wildlife of the gardens settled in for the evening. Michael followed the meditation with several of his own compositions one of which, “Swan”,was composed during his time as a musician in residence in the gardens.

Appreciation for the Harp Meditation in the Cactus Garden
An extraordinary harp meditation experience in the beautiful cactus garden. Michael's melodious harp playing is like a gentle breeze. Surrounded by the resilient, vibrant cacti, I found myself in a space that symbolised endurance and strength, which harmonized perfectly with the harp's delicate strains. The clear, fresh air and the fragrance of the desert blooms further enriched the sensory experience. I look forward to future opportunities to be a part of your musical meditations.

    Relaxing Forest Therapy
Forest therapy in the Botanic Gardens was a lovely experience. I’d recommend it to family and friends. Observed the gardens like never before and felt very relaxed and present. The guides were supportive and unobtrusive, allowing for a great personal experience. Felt grateful for the wonder and beauty of the gardens in our city.
Thank you for your detailed and positive review of the Royal Botanical Gardens. We are glad you enjoyed your visit, and we appreciate you sharing all the wonderful experiences available within the gardens. We look forward to you visiting again in the future.

    Beautiful grounds
It is well worth booking the bus, which takes you around the grounds, in the company of an expert tour guide. Once you have your bearings, then wander around the impressive gardens. If it’s sunny, take a picnic in and enjoy the Lakeside views. All dogs must be on a lead as the wildlife is easily scared. This didn’t stop some idiots from bringing their unleashed pets into the park. What a shame. You might want to bring along an app which identifies the many different birds and bird song you will experience as you walk around the grounds.
Thank you for your detailed and positive review of the Royal Botanical Gardens. We are glad you enjoyed your visit, and we appreciate you sharing all the wonderful experiences available within the gardens. Our skilled Visitor Experience team regularly roam the Gardens to check that dogs are on lead and where safe and possible to do so, encourage visitors to follow our regulations. We do have to depend on visitors taking their own initiative to behave in a way that doesn’t negatively impact the Gardens or those visiting them. We appreciate your interest in the Gardens and encourage you to advocate our need for continued support as more people enjoy Melbourne Gardens in the coming months. We look forward to you visiting again in the future. Thank you for your concern.

    Nice place to chill out
Spent a few hours taking in the gardens. Plenty of places to just sit and reflect. Easy walking and gentle grades. The Terrace cafe is a good place to stop for refreshment near the small lake.

    great
Melbourne has a world class botanical garden, a jewel that is a testament to its landscapers, botanists and city planners alike. My favorite was the fern garden with its collection of amazing NZ, NSW and QNL specimen, the Chilean, Californian and especially CHinese/Japanese plants and of course the many lakes with the birds and turtles. One could spend many hours with the fauna and flora but also, like natives do, chillin' on the grass. Kudos to VIC to make this available to the citizen.
We really appreciate your review and thank you for highlighting the different areas of the gardens you enjoyed. We look forward to you visiting again.

Fantastic Birds of the Royal Botanical Gardens Melbourne
The Secret Life of Birds tour, with Liz and Paul as guides, was an utter joy. The group was a perfect size, and the information was well delivered and received. To my delight, and with the expertise of the guides, I managed to tick off a new bird from my twitchers list! Hello Australasian Grebe!
Thank you so much for your lovely feedback. Our amazing volunteer guides, Liz and Paul, are always excited to share their knowledge and love of the gardens through their tours. We are so glad you had such a positive, informative experience. We hope to welcome you back to the gardens soon.

We visited whilst play was delayed at the Australian Open. Tickets at the tennis allow you to leave and renter the grounds so we walked to the gardens. They are free, large , peaceful and varied. So beautiful! The cafe is good too, especially sitting under its veranda watching the rain pour whilst drinking tea.

Stopped in on New Years Day 2020. The park was full on a warm day. Many people had found spots under trees and by the lakes. It is a beautiful place to walk and stroll. We started by first visiting the war memorial across the street which is worthy of an hour's visit. The Gardens are a delight to walk through. We especially enjoyed walking by the lake, getting a coffee from the concession stand by the lake and seeing the boats float around on the lake. The grounds and plants were interesting and the view of the Melbourne sky line was good. Give this place 2-3 hours on your next visit to Melbourne. It is worth the time and the peach and relaxation it offers the visitor.

You could spend a couple of days easily strolling around the gardens and never see all of it. The cafe had a good selection of refreshments and food available, with the birds keeping you entertained.

If you prepare a beautiful place for a picnic.

A beautiful autumn day in Melbourne last Thursday so decided to lunch in the gardens as we had not been there for years. The gardens are a delight, not quite ready to put on their best autumn colours yet. Lunch on the other hand was impossible. The cafe by the lake was closed, the Kiosk had nothing of interest and after being seated in Jardin Tan and not even our order taken for 30 minutes we walked out and they didn’t even notice. Next time we will take a picnic lunch, there a seats everywhere to enjoy. Came home quite deflated. Lift your game Botanical caterers.

Thanks for taking the time to let us know that your visit the Gardens was not satisfactory. We have shared your comments with our food and beverage tenants, as well as our development team, so they are aware of this and can make improvements. We hope to have all of our cafes operating again as soon as the 7 day COVID-19 circuit breaker has ended.

It's just south of the CBD so really, in the city, which makes it easy to get to from either the downtown or the areas south. It's a huge oasis offering whatever you're looking for with respect to nature and gardens. Lots of wonderful programs are offered as well including Shakespeare in the Park, (Wind in the Willows is performed for kids and families, Hamlet for adults in the evenings). The Meditative Forest Walk is well worthwhile for grown-ups; quite magical. Don't miss a visit starting with the beautiful Visitor's Centre where you can get the info you need to explore the park in the way you choose.

The Melbourne Botanical Gardens is one of my favourite places to visit in my city. The scenes are perfect for photographers. The Gardens are a great place to relax - with many nooks to get away from crowds and have a peaceful reflection. The cafe next to the lake is worth a visit - I enjoyed a tasty Chai Latte there on a recent Sunday morning. I highly recommend a visit to these Gardens (free entry) on your next visit to Melbourne.

Thank you for taking the time to review the gardens. We are often told that the gardens is a favourite destination from our visitors, so we are so fortunate to have a such a special place right in the heart of Melbourne. We agree that the gardens is one of the most tranquil places to spend time in all of Melbourne. The views of the city backdrop in the near distance are absolutely breathtaking and, as you mentioned, great for photography. One of our favourite views is on Central Lawn looking down at Central Lake and Government House. This is the area where Moonlight Cinema is held during the summer months. We hope that you will visit us again soon.

A visit to the Royal Botanical Gardens is a must and a great addition is to book yourself on a punt around the lake.

It’s fun, relaxing and very informative. You can bring a bottle of your favourite wine/beer as you’re gently taken around the lake. Book in early to secure a spot as they do sell out!

Once done, grab a bite or better yet, bring a picnic and enjoy the open spaces and beautiful gardens so close to the CBD!

We visited the gardens on a beautiful January day. People were outside with dogs and friends and their children. There was an outdoor play being boisterously performed by it’s players. Trees are mature and healthy. We loved the Fern Garden and Volcano Garden. We had lunch at the Tea Garden (sorry if name is wrong). Food was great.

We spent a few hours wandering through the gardens in the Autumn sunshine. They’re beautifully maintained and it was great to see such a huge range of people enjoying them - families, couples, old, young, dogs (on leads). There was a concert at Government House, and while we weren’t invited, we enjoyed the singing that floated out of the grounds! Sylvia Paladino singing “Hallelujah” was a fitting soundtrack to our meandering.

Thank you for writing such a beautiful 5 star review of the gardens. Autumn is definitely one of the best times to visit with gorgeous natural light and a wide array of seasonal colour transitions. We do have something special to offer all year around, so we hope that you will join us again soon. We strive to make the gardens accessible for everyone, and your comment about seeing the diverse range of visitors really reinforces that we are on the right track. Also, loved reading how you were treated to the floating vocal stylings of Silvie Paladino from the concert at Government House. In the future, you may enjoy attending our Harp Meditation concerts composed and performed by harpist Michael Johnson.

If you like nature, walking or just need a break from the city the Royal Botanical Gardens can't be missed. We enjoyed it so much that we spent our whole afternoon here, and walked for miles. Very large, with a variety of green spaces, big lawns for relaxing, shady trees to sit under, ponds with black swans, paths for running, large shady trees, and beautiful landscaped flowerbeds. The arid garden has cacti and other desert plants. And it's not all Australian plants here, either, they've greenery from all over the world. Be there.... see for yourself how beautiful they are!
