Top ways to experience SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium and nearby attractions

The area
Neighbourhood: Central Business District
Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.

A very daunting experience to begin with having no previous diving experience. But from the very beginning every single member of the staff was super friendly and engaging and I could tell they really do want you to have a safe and amazing dive!
The introduction was short and sweet with everything you need to know, and the dive even though it was only 30 minutes it felt like hours to me personally. I felt very comfortable with the crew I was being sent down with which made me very calm for something I had never done before. Would 100% recommend to anyone especially those without any previous diving experience. 10/10 would love to do it again someday.

Love seeing all the beautiful sea life! My son is only 2 and had a blast! Most sea creatures are there and was seen and their habitats beautifully displayed!

We spent 1.5 hours at the aquarium. My 11 and14 year old girls really enjoyed it. Favorite was seeing the sharks, stingrays and penguins. It’s a bit hard to navigate at times and I’d recommend wearing a mask as there are tunnels and compact spaces. Highly recommend it for younger children.

Take the reviews that mention overcrowding seriously. Didn't feel like a celebration of amazing sea creatures any more. More like a poorly lit maze challenge (which we failed). Depressing for the sea life, especially the penguins with their not-so-happy feet. Way too expensive. Bet you'll go anyway but you have been warned.

Disorganised chaos: that sums up the experience!
The Aquarium looks very ‘tired’ these days. It needs an audit to ascertain what needs updating,
because it looks ‘second rate’. Don’t know why the consortium that owns it didn’t freshen up during Covid lockdowns.

Visiting during school holidays is not recommended because there is no order to the place: the signage is non-existent and the map is very difficult to read. People walk in all directions and this creates more confusion.

The highlights were the Penguins. And the panorama on basement level 2 is also fascinating to watch the fish swim overhead.
Aside from that, there is no indication of what species the fish belong to, which was rather frustrating.

The food in the cafe was surprisingly quite good - and there’s a good space to move around. But it’s very much help yourself and finding a bin to dispose of rubbish was challenging because the bins were overflowing.

But the positive is the staff are fantastic! So pleasant and helpful - particularly when we lost a member of our group!

Our young children had a wonderful time exploring all there was to see. We went mid-week to avoid the large crowds, but still had to navigate around school groups and many people were going in the opposite direction to the numbers on the map and this disrupted the flow considerably. We managed to move around the exhibits ok, however with a pram it was a little tedious waiting for the small lifts to get from one floor to another on a few occasions. The 4D cinema was closed.
We visited the aquarium quite a few years ago and really enjoyed watching the feeding shows and information talks on a few of the exhibits. However this time we didn’t see any sign or advisement of anything like this. I assume this is to keep people moving through and avoid large crowds of people to aline with covid safe plans. The map we received on the last visit many years ago was much clearer to understand and the arrows indicated the direction and clear flow that was expected. Maybe this needs to be added again.
I recommend this as a fun family experience, there was a good amount to entertain our young children and gain a great insight into the underwater world.
There was however one thing that was very disappointing! As we were leaving the aquarium there where bundles of photos printed on quality card stock for every single group of people that had entered the aquarium that day. We did not request these and yet there were 8 photos printed for our family of 4. My daughter was standing in the wrong spot when her photo was taken so her individual photo didn’t work or there may have been further printed of her. Now if they were just handing them out to each group as they left that is one thing. But if you chose not to buy the photos right there on the spot. They take the photos to be disposed of! Despite weather these are being recycled or not, it is very irresponsible for a company that advocates so strongly for the environment to think it is fine to print hundreds of photos a day on card stock knowing full well they will be simply throwing away many of them for the sake of possibly making some money for a the few that choose to buy them. Surely with the technology today they would be able to offer digital kiosks to view the photos digitally and them order from there and avoid SO MUCH WASTE. What a disappointing end to a great experience!

The place was packed with people and prams. It’s a shame they don’t have a circuit system that you all walk through the same way to help it flow better. Was very hard with a baby and toddler to see anything as so many people blocking the exhibits. Really disappointing. Certainly need to stagger entry better. Not enjoyable at all just felt stressed.
Also I’ll add we didn’t even visit during school holidays! It was a Monday outsides of all states holidays and yet was still that busy.

Was hard to enjoy the experience as the centre was over crowded - when your travelling with a little one and want them to enjoy the experience but way overcrowded and struggled to get close to see
Also families without prams using the lifts making it a long wait to move between floors

Sea life looked nice. This place could get the prices down for visitors. The plaques and signs could improve a lot.

We went with our toddler, it was quite crowded for a staggered ticket entry system for covid. We thought it was ok, but overpriced and a weird layout. Sydney is much better. Penguins were fantastic however.
