Il - LUME - inating Leonardo!
There's lots to learn about Leonardo! This exhibition explores the inventions and artistic developments of the Renaissance, focusing on Da Vinci, and features facsimiles of his Codices (notebooks). There are stunning reconstructions of machines sketched and described therein, and a fascinating, in-depth analysis of the creation of the Mona Lisa. Lay on a beanbag and soak in the stunning visuals which highlight the artistic genii of 16th Century Florence, Venice and Milan. At times however, the music (strangely, mostly 18th Century?) overpowered the room. We visited on a Monday afternoon when attendance was fairly light and thoroughly recommend this exhibit for families.

Wow ... the c whole experience was great ... lieing down on the floor watching and listening to the production was fantastic and educational. Seeing models of his 'inventive' mind brought his ideas alive and then seeing actual pages from one of his Codex was incredible. Well worth the visit and it was not crowded.

We love coming back to The Lume!
I've been to each exhibition and what I loved this time is that all the feedback of all the good bits to date and more were in this exhibition. I love how you cater for all sensory experiences, visual, auditory and kinesthetic. This exhibition particularly was a mix of art and science and it was so interesting but that's really because the subject matter really lended itself to a multi-pronged experience. It was the best to date, thank you so much and we'll be back!

Da Vinci at the Lume is simply marvellous
The Lume, DaVinci experience was truly amazing. I stayed and read everything, lunched in the Medici cafe and did the VR flyover of my beloved Firenze. Totally amazing immersive experience- highly recommend. I needed 3 hours to soak it all and participate in the interactive elements

Leonardo da Vinci at The LUME - stunning!
The LUME Melbourne is tone of the largest digital art gallery's in the world. The exhibition is titles - Leonardo da Vinci — 500 Years of Genius. He was a polymath indeed when you consider his paintings, inventions, works on anatomy, engineering etc. The Codex Atlanticus notebooks was a special feature in the exhibition. Another important feature is the work of the famous French Optical Engineer, Pascal Cotte who is a consultant to The Louvre Museum. Cotte invented a multispectral camera which scans from ultraviolet to infrared peeling layers of paint showing hidden details of the Mona Lisa. There are many prints of Leonard's paintings and models of some of the inventions. This is an exhibition for all ages and a truly worthwhile visit!

We went to see the Van Gogh digital exhibit at The Lume on a Sunday. We arrived at 10 am and there was no queue. All the staff at the exhibit were courteous and professional. We went into the introductory room and then progressed to the main exhibit which is in a huge kind of theatre. When we first walked in, it was a bit overwhelming, the size and beauty of the display. I would recommend that if quiet you go into the sunflower room, the drawing areas first before they get crowded. You can’t book the cafe , so we went just after 11 am and had an early relaxed lunch. We ordered online via our phones . The service was excellent. The food was really good , we had the equivalent of a croque monsieur, potato and leek soup, fries, kids waffle, petit four and coffees and all were of a high standard . We ended up staying for four hours and watched the exhibit four times from different areas. It was lovely to see that this exhibit made VanGogh accessible to a wide range of ages , toddlers to the elderly, and from different backgrounds. The music was chosen really well to accompany the exhibit. We booked our car parking online via the Lume site and it was only $12 for the DFO car park which is right next to the convention centre
I would highly recommend this exhibit

If you like Aboriginal art and are interested to understand how ‘country’ inspires First Nations People and get a better understanding of the culture and beliefs of the people who have lived here for 2,000 generations, the Connections at The Lume is a fantastic way to spend a morning but you have only to early February to see it.
The exhibition exceeded the expectations of my family and I wish I could go back again before we leave Melbs.
Ps discounted parking at $12 for the day was an added and unexpected bonus. Everybody loves a bargain!!

What a great way to experience and learn about the impressionists. Essentially this was a 40 minute imax type, super immersive film experience, that was done exceptionally well. It was informative, interesting and perfectly produced so that you had just about enough time to study the images which were unfolding across the huge walls in front of you. It was interesting that amongst those visiting were a group of young mothers, with six month babies who were mesmerised by the sounds and lights – as were the adults.

This is basically a slide show of images of Van Gogh paintings with a few random videos interspersed. Beware!...While the website claims Lume is open till 9pm, on arriving at 3:20 for our 3pm session we were advised that it was closing at 5pm. Nothing about that on the website. We checked. Okay, not great but we figured we had 1 hour 40 minutes. We wandered through the first small room that started with the developer of the show telling us how bored people got with the actual Van Gogh paintings and how great it was instead to see them as a slide show. There were also various signs with some Wikipedia biographicals on the painter. Then we went to the other room - the big room and at about 3:45 we went to the cafe and spent $80 on food and drinks. We then settled down and started to enjoy the ambience of the event. Our food arrived a bit after 4pm, looked good.....Suddenly at about 4:15 Van Gogh started to advertise a Lexus and then the slideshow stopped and a sign went up to say the Lume was closed. Apparently 5:00pm meant 4:20. While $71 each seemed pretty steep for a supersized slide show, when we were being shunted out within an hour of arriving, having also ordered $80 of food that we expected to be able to savour rather than bolt down, it all started to look like a rip off. We sympathetically asked whether it was an issue with Covid, but we were told "No, we are having a function." Would that be known in advance? You couldn't update the website to say you were shutting down at 4:20?.....and I won't be buying either a Lexus or another ticket to 'the Lume'.

Parking $12, ticket $39 for a weekday morning in a crowded warehouse in which paintings/animation of van Gogh were projected onto the wall and floor. It was somehow immersing and a very different way to appreciate fine art, but none of it is the fine art itself and thus not really justifying the cost. It may be better advertised as a “4D movie” with a show room of the Lexus UX250h. The “interactive” area where you could sketch two of van Gogh’s art in 3-5 minutes is good, but only for those 3-5 minutes of course. The sunflower room was a slight disappointment amidst the high expectation; as it was photogenic, it looked better in a photo and not in reality.

The absolute best to me is the “replica” bedroom in Arles where you literally walked in and sat on the chair or the bed: that was truly surreal.

This will not be a must unless you love the artworks and/or the cost is halved in my opinion. I will have a long thought about whether or not to return for Monet and friends.

Just go! This is an important, evocative, provocative, educational, inspirational and dynamic experience. There are many times when I was moved to tears of joy and insight. It is a magnificent, mystical and magical visit.

We saw the exhibit repeat three times around from different viewpoints– make sure you give yourself enough time to be totally subsumed in this exhibition.

Simply the Best thing I spent money on when I visited Melbourne. Just go!

We arrived early and were the send send pair of visitors into event room. The movement active across the floor was simply superb . At one point waves on floor cashed on the beach and shoals of fish darting across the floor. The walls changed in cinque with floor. All were different paintings by First Nation artists. There were static art instillations as well. As we were leaving and the gallery was filling up the moving display changed completely. Unfortunately. NOT for the better. Get there early for the best experience.

I’ve actually been to this exhibition twice I loved it so much.
It’s held within the Melbourne Exhibition Centre at South Wharf. It is a bit of a walk to get to the exhibit itself from the front door. It’s a good 5 minute walk so allow yourself time based on your entry slot. The first time I went, I was an hour late as I went to the wrong place but they still allowed us entry.
There is a history of Van Gough’s life with pictures of his art explaining why that piece was painted and what was happening to him during that time. This part of the exhibition could have been better. It probably needed more room to read the information.
You then proceed in to the main exhibit which is a brought to life screen/slide show of Van Gough’s work. It’s beautiful. It’s immersive and relaxing and has the most beautiful classical music playing to accompany the art work.
There is a mock up of the French cafe but you do need to queue up to be able to sit at a table and order coffee/wine etc, there is also a small room full of sunflowers which again, could have been better. I’m not sure how, I was just a little underwhelmed by it.
The overall experience is beautiful and I would definitely recommend going.

While the show was visually lovely to watch this experience involves being in one room for about half an hour watching the show happen all around you via digital art and video accompanied by music and sounds. I was expecting a lot more unless I missed something this was the entire experience - with the exception of being able to have some lovely cocktails with food in the cafe inside the LUME while watching the show and seeing the original artworks in a room adjacent. I do not think it was worth what it cost to go and watch the show and I don't think it is something that is very kid friendly....maybe more of a couple activity for a brunch/lunch.
