About
Melbourne Recital Centre comprises two of the finest acoustic spaces in the southern hemisphere, carefully crafted to present the best music the world has to offer. Drawing fundamental influence from the traditional box shape of European concert halls, Elisabeth Murdoch Hall is lined with striking plywood panels of Australian plantation Hoop Pine timber, designed to resemble the back of a beautiful instrument and provide greater acoustic intimacy across the 1000-seat auditorium. The superbly organic acoustics of the hall extend to the Salon, a uniquely intimate 150-seat space that can also act as a companion room to the hall. Comprising a series of diffusing timber panels with tessellated plywood faces tipped in and out to form a modulated wall and ceiling, Percy Grainger’s 1937 graphic score, Free Music No. 2 is inscribed across the surface to inspire players and audiences alike. Swing by, say hello and book tickets to a show. Discover why Melbourne Recital Centre is the Best Place to Hear beautiful music.

The Melbourne Recital Centre was purpose-built for musical performances. Music of many varieties finds a home here. The venue does not overwhelm smaller ensembles. We have been here for several performances, I am always impressed by the acoustics. The Recital Centre is in the Southbank arts complex.

GReat acoustics in this auditoriu.
We just went to a children's Mozart recital with our granddaughter - which was excellent; most of the children there were captivated. Overall this was our third visit to this locatiion - Elizabeth Murdoch Hall - and we have yet to be disappointed. Lovely facilitties and some great choice of concerts and music throughout each season.
A gem.

The Melbourne Recital Centre is a venue purpose built for live musical perfomances. It's in Southbank Boulevard, next to the Melbourne Theatre Company's Southbank Theatre. The Recital Centre's showpiece auditorium is the Elisabeth Murdoch Hall. It is named for the late Dame Elisabeth Murdoch, a well-known patron of the performing arts.

We attended a piano symphony, the venue was well-suited.

Sound in the hall was great, seating was somewhat comfortable for the duration of the show. The centre had a box office and bar in the foyer as well as a candy bar. Restroom facilities were clean but located on the ground floor.

The centre is wheel-chair friendly with a lift.

This is a terrific venue for classical music . Good seating, great acoustic. There’s a comfortable, spacious foyer with adequate seating for the elderly, disabled . Also a coffee shop and bar adjacent, as well as drinks / snacks in the foyer .

Acoustically magnificent, it’s a great place to go to a concert. However, considering it’s a well-established venue, the tickets aren’t cheap.
AND ...
take your own snacks. Here’s an example of the prices:

$6.00 for a little packet of nuts. SIX!

That’s DOUBLE the recommended retail price.

This place is certainly not affordable for an average family. But then, it was built by The super-rich, who are clearly out of touch with ‘the masses’.

Why should the Arts be so expensive in Australia, compared to other countries? Are the finer aspects of our culture meant to be out of the reach of the average family pay packet?

This was our first experience at the Melbourne Recital Centre. We saw Janet Seidel in the Salon and what an intimate first class show and venue it was. I can’t believe how reasonably priced the tickets were.
We caught public transport which was also a first and that was easily accessible, safe and convenient. We will certainly be watching the guide and attending more shows.
