Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.

Evan Walker Bridge over the Yarra River is a pedestrian bridge that links Flinders Street Railway Station (Northbank) and Southbank, an inner city industrial area in Melbourne. It is named after Melbourne’s former planning minister and architect who transformed the Southbank into a precinct. The original name of the bridge was “Locks of Love Bridge”. This is where couples attached a lock to the bridge proclaiming their love for each other. In 2015 the city council removed all the locks because their weight was causing damage to the bridge. The locks were given to local artists who created their own artistic masterpieces from them. Their artworks are displayed in Melbourne’s Town Hall.

The Evan Walker Pedestrian Bridge was the inspiration of Evan Walker. Evan Walker was Member of the Victorian Parliament (1979 -1992) and Minister for Planning. His ideas about reviving Southbank, a run-down industrial maritime zone, transformed the city of Melbourne. Every day, 20,000 people cross the Evan Walker Bridge from the city to Southbank.

Evan Walker was an architect who had a vision for Southbank. The south of the Yarra was a run-down industrial area until he kicked-off the rebuilding process, which turned it into an up-market recreational area. This pedestrian bridge commemorates his vision.

I arrived here on a train to Flinders Street Station from the country and as you leave the station there are a couple of bridges you can traverse to make your way to Southbank... this is one of them. They estimate that approximately 20,000 people traverse the bridge daily.
So who is Evan? For a few years (2012-2015) it was known locally as Love Lock Bridge until a decision was made to rename the bridge after Evan.
'Evan Walker was a highly regarded member of parliament, a visionary who protected what was important about our city but also had the foresight to identify opportunities to make Melbourne great.'
An architect by profession, Prof Walker placed a ministerial planning scheme in 1982 over the whole of the Southbank land, from the river back to the freeway alignment, and invited expressions of interest.
The bridge is interesting to walk over as you walk towards the middle of it ... you are walking up ... and once you get to midway you head down to the other side. It's incredibly busy no matter what time you make your way over it and I guess this week I walked over it during Peak traffic. There are some information boards to read about the bridge on the Southbank side.

Evan Walker Bridge is named for Evan Walker, a visionary architect and Victorian State government minister who inspired the development of Southgate.. The bridge spans the Yarra River, and carries thousands of pedestrians every day. Southgate has become one of Melbourne's premiere entertainment and shopping areas, including Crown Casino. Evan Walker Bridge is located between Sandridge Bridge and Princes Bridge. Evan Walker would be proud.

Evan Walker Bridge honours Professor Evan Walker, an architect by profession, who was a politician responsible for the creation of what is now Southbank district. The area used to be industrial and quite ugly. Now it has been turned into a vibrant part of Melbourne.

The bridge is named after Evan Walker who started the process to convert the Southbank area into what it is today back in 1982 when the planning and discussion commenced. It is a great bridge and an asset to Melbourne.

I am always fascinated by this bridge... as you leave Flinders Street Station to head over to Southbank... you traverse this to get there. Unlike many bridges you have to climb a hill as the bridge is arched... it feels like you are having a workout to get over it. :)
Recently I crossed because I was catching up with people at Southbank, having caught the train from Southern Cross Station to Flinders Street Station this was the best exit point.
Named after a member of parliament ... this bridge will give you amazing views of the cityscape regardless of which direction you are going in.

One of two pedestrian bridges between Queen and Princess bridges. One side starts outside of Southgate and the other outside of flinders st station side entrance. Pony fish island bar underneath bridge is an excellent spot as well. The views from Evan Walker bridge are quite pretty and a great tourist Photo opp
