Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.

The former Port of Melbourne Authority Building is located in Market St, It is towards the west end of the Melbourne CBD. The building remains impressive, it is built in Classical style. The Port of Melbourne was, and remains, one of Australia's busiest general cargo shipping ports.

The former Port of Melbourne Authority (PMA) building is one of the finest remaining buildings surviving from the between-the-wars period. Melbourne was an important port in the 1920s and 1930s, and dockers shifted cargo 'on the hook.' Melbourne is still an important port; it's Australia's largest general cargo port, but these days the port is mechanized and cargo is moved in containers.

The classical proportions, the tall Ionic colonnade on all four elevations, and the richly detailed interiors, make this one of the most important interwar office blocks in Melbourne, and display the extravagance of the Harbour Commissioners. It is one of the most accomplished examples in Melbourne of 20th century Beaux-Arts-influenced Greek revival architecture.

Designed by Sydney Smith Ogg & Serpell, it was completed in 1929 and was awarded the Royal Victorian Institute of Architects’ Street Architecture Medal in 1933.

So what will you see these days? Well it's now mostly an apartment building with a restaurant/bar. The building stands proudly against the skyline and draws your attention. It's a great reminder of what this part of the city once was... with Queens Wharf nearby. It's easy to locate as it's a short walking distance from Flinders Street Station.

Lovely old building that is now apartments. It reminds of a building out of Gotham city. Located around the corner from the immigration museum.

This nine--storey tower dates from 1929. This rare Beaux-Arts building is located in Market St. It's built in polished marble and granite. The former Port of Melbourne Authority Building is a remnant of the building boom of the inter-war years. It's an impressive building.
