our group of ten wanted to go wine tasting while we were in melbourne when we stopped there on a recent cruise. months before our trip i contacted MELBOURNE PRIVATE TOURS to get a quote and suggestions. their response was prompt, and they recommended MORNINGTON PENINSULA WINERIES TOUR. the price was higher than we saw for any of the other private tours that we had arranged for this cruise which visited ports in both australia and new zealand. but having a comfortable vehicle and seeing all the inclusions listed for the tour persuaded us to book it. inclusions listed were "seated range tasting at Crittenden Estates, wine tastings (approx. 3 vineyards), morning tea, 2 course lunch with beverage, local guide providing expert commentary, luxurious private vehicle with complimentary water." further information provided by MELBOURNE PRIVATE TOURS listed highlights of the tour "a memorable coastal drive, passing historic coloured bathing boxes, scenic views from arthur's seat lookout, spectacular ocean and port philip bay beaches, seaside villages, wine tasting at local wineries - fully tailored to the interests of the guest, the finest mornington peninsula porduce with wine at a vineyard restaurant for lunch.
the tour sounded wonderful. had all the elements listed in the description been included in the tour, it would have been a wonderful day. but, sad to say, much was left out.
we did have a nice vehicle which accommodated our group of ten. it was clean and comfortable.
we did have complimentary water.
we did have a guide who provided commentary.
we did make a photo stop to see the bathing boxes.
we did stop for morning tea. it was at our stop for tea that the tour guide presented the option to see sorrento, something he described as too good to miss since we were so close, but he also explained that doing this would take about 50 minutes away from tour time, and that it would perhaps make one of the wine-tasting stops not possible. with three or four wine tastings listed in the itinerary, and a lunch that included wine, we felt that having one of the wine-tasting stops deleted would be okay, so we decided to take his advice and check out sorrento. i must also add that when we stopped at the cafe for tea, it was clear that our guide had not given the esblishment a heads-up that he was coming in with a group of ten. it was a lovely place. the coffee/tea and treat were all good. but the stop was not as efficient as it could have been.
the tour included ONLY ONE tasting at t-gallant winery. once again, it was clear that the winery had not been given a heads-up by our guide that he was coming in with a group of ten people. and, once again, i felt that the visit and tasting were not as efficient as they could have been.
we did NOT have a seated range tasting with sommelier at crittenden estates.
we did NOT stop at arthurs seat.
we did NOT have a seated range tasting with sommelier at crittenden estate
we did have lunch. it was a good lunch. but, once again, this stop very disorganized. driver had to ask direction to the restaurant. guide told us, initially, that we could order anything off the huge, multi-page menu. but after a few moments, and checking his notes, he announced that we could have only 2-courses. we had a great meal and a great glass of wine at the restaurant, but it was all very chaotic and confusing, because neither the guide nor the restaurant manager seemed to know what was going on.
the mornington peninsula is beautiful and i am glad that we got to see what we did see, but we were all dismayed and disappointed that the tour was not as described. as soon as i had access to cruise ship internet, i notified MELBOURNE PRIVATE TOURS about our experience and our disappointment. very quickly i received a response that 20% of the tour price would be deducted from what had been charged. when i returned home, i wrote a more detailed explanation of our experience, as the 20% discount had not yet appeared on credit card statement. once again, i received a reply quite quickly. the 20% discount would be applied. i am happy to report that the company is using our experience to learn how to do it better.
