This tour was set up by our travel company, Down Under Endeavors, so I never really looked them up. Once our group of five was picked up by tour guide, Amy, she explained that Echidna Walkabout was actually a conservation company that relied on tourists like us to help support their cause. As we drove out to our first stop, Serendip National Park, she explained that the owners had been interested in a number of wildlife projects since starting the company in 1993. One of the projects involve identifying koalas in the wild. We would see that first hand on our second stop. At Serendip we were lead by Amy into a large field where she had spotted a "mob" of kangaroos. We zig-zagged across the field so as not to spook them by going directly toward them. Along the way we took lots of close up photos as the family group of kangaroos moved around. Along the way a number of emus entered the field so we got great photographs of them as well. We also hiked out to a billabong to view some native species of animals (wallabies) and birds. Then it was off to our second stop of the day, You Yangs Regional Park. The first thing Amy did was set up a picnic lunch for us. As we were eating a mob of kangaroos when sprinting by apparently spooked by a hiker somewhere in the park. Then Amy said we would look for four koalas that had been spotted by a Echidna Walkabout biologist that morning. The biologist had left geo-markers for Amy to read on her phone as a way to try to find them. We tromped around the eucalyptus forest trying to find the reclusive critters. It became a game of who would spot them first. I am happy to report we found all four but none of them was active so our photos were limited to "that blob in the tree." It was a great walkabout allowing us to see these native Australia marsupials in their wild habitat. It was everything we hoped it would be and more.

Dear KenVicLee, Wow! Thank you so much for taking the time to write this incredible review. You have said so much that is important to us. You are completely right, we observe and monitor the movements of wild koalas as a part of our Koala Research Project. Each day every koala found is located on a map and by GPS, they are photographed, their tree species, and their behavior is noted. Having a Koala Researcher out in the bush everyday ahead of the tour group ensures a high degree of success with koala sightings (100% over the past 5 years) and adds three hours of monitoring data to each day’s sightings. We are thrilled to know that you had a great time on our Koalas and Kangaroos IN THE WILD tour seeing native Australia marsupials in their wild habitat. All the best from the team at Echidna Walkabout - Janine, Roger, Caz, Martin, Bart, Kirby, Brett, Caitlin, Hannah, Jordan, Tracey, Hayley, Dan, Asitha, Amy, Ed, Sam, Stella, and Jess.

Our guide, Brett, was wonderful. We saw three koalas in their natural habitat in the bush. One came down right in front of us and crossed the road! The guide provided a gourmet picnic lunch with Lamington for dessert. He also made hot tea with Lemon Eucalyptus leaves. Next we went to a different refuge and saw lots of kangaroos in their natural habitat. Perfect day.

A great introduction to Australian wildlife. Much better to see Koalas and Kangaroos in the wild rather than in zoos, led by a very knowledgeable guide.

This was the only tour we took out of Melbourne recently and it was fantastic. We were picked up right on time. Our total group was only 5 people with a great guide Martin. We went to two different parks- You Yangs and then Serandip. Martin was in constant contact with other guides/researchers in the area so that he could take us to the best places to spot koalas. Because the researchers have been studying these koalas for years, Martin was able to tell us the name, age and gender of each one we saw and also could even tell us how they were related to each other. He was also able to point out and name many other birds and animals we saw on the tour. The tour consisted of mostly van riding with short hikes in various locations. We met another group at a picnic spot for lunch and the food provided was delicious and came with a history of some of the settlers in the area. At the second stop we were able to see mobs of kangaroos and emus and get fairly close to them. It was a marvelous day!
