- James K1 contributionDelightful, whimsical and enjoyableAbsolutely fantastic! My daughter wanted to experience the Crumbling Prince for her birthday and was delighted. Immersive experience and a very clever use of AI. Dean was a terrific host. Well thought-out and authentic environment. . Very Miyazaki-esque aesthetics - loved it. Thoroughly recommended!Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 25 January 2024
- Mark HarrisMelbourne, Australia92 contributionsOne of the best experiences you can have in Melbourne! What a fantastic time! We did the Ukiyo room, and it's one of the more unique escape rooms out there. Normally we try and do escape rooms with just the 2 of us, but I can easily see how a 4-person group would enhance the experience even more. In the past we've done Deep Space, and we can't wait to try Deep Space 2!Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 July 2024
- Charlotte H3 contributionsFantastic and unique escape roomWe had a great experience at Ukiyo. We participated in the Crumpling Prince part 1, our host Dean was fantastic, very thoughtful and helpful. I really enjoyed that I didn't feel rushed in this escape room. Very unique and fun escape room and a really immersive experience. Dean also went above and beyond for us, I lost an item in the escape room and Dean made made so much effort to return it to me which I really appreciated. Highly recommend getting the staff to take a photo afterwards for you.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 September 2024
- MayleneNorway10 contributionsMUST DO in Melbourne, best escape experience ever!I love escaperooms, and I do them everywhere I travel - but this is the most unique escaperoom me and my friend have ever encountered. The design, the story, but the most amazing part, the AI - we did Deep Space, and having Enkidu to help guide us did the whole experience. Its crazy how connected we got to him, I have never felt such emotions from an escaperoom as this one, both excitement and sadness. Also, this is actually more of a "real-life videogame" situation than a traditional escaperoom, never experienced anything like it. The Deep Space - Divinity ended in such a cliffhanger, and as we are visiting from Norway and can't just come back, our amazing game master arranged it for us to play Deep Space - Dark just minutes afterwards, as we couldnt just leave without knowing what would happen (extremely glad we did, what a thrill!!). I have nothing but praise for these guys, simply amazing, will recommend this a million times!!Visited September 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 20 September 2024

As one of the highest reviewed Escape Rooms in Melbourne, our expectations were high enough to pay for also the most expensive escape room we have ever done. We did the Deep Space room. I will start with the positives. Our host was fine, there was nothing wrong with that. The technology in the room was also one of the best I have encountered in an Escape Room but that is all for the positives.
I have completed dozens of Escape Rooms and this was one of the worst. I have never done an Escape Room with less puzzles and never have we been required to sing before as a requirement for one of the childish puzzles. Our radio did not even work because the batteries ran out. When we finished the room, I was left stunned by how underwhelming it was and it felt awful to have spent so much money for the experience which was for a special occasion.
I do not advise bringing a full group of 6, it only makes it more expensive overall and with how few puzzles there are, it only meant there was that much less to do per person. Sadly it was just overall so disappointing and there are so many better Escape Rooms elsewhere for much cheaper.

The attention to detail is amazing. Very well thought out, imagined and articulated experience. Seamless immersion with just enough difficulty to challenge. If you're looking for a more narrative based escape room experience this is for you. Not too many abstract head-scratching puzzles but enough complexity to keep you intrigued and present.
Would highly highly recommend.

This is not an escape room and should not even be listed in the same category. Very limited puzzles in the space themed room and so much time is wasted just talking to the AI.
Brought a friend to come for his first escape room given the raving reviews, and was thoroughly disappointed, especially at the price.
We could have gone to 2 other escape rooms for this price, and would have prefered to do so.
Saddened by this, felt it was an intro story room just to sell you the next story in the line. Also the role cards played no role in the first story.
Very pressured by staff at the end saying that we will enjoy the next one, wanting us to drop another $250 as the story isn't even finished in the first one with 0 closure.

My wife and I have been to escape rooms around the city. Ukiyo is by far the most different and quietly engaging of them all. It is fully immersive and very built on teamwork. It's very different from your usual clues and locks. It's an amazing experience and definitely a must try for the escape room scene.

A disclaimer to this review is that prior to this visit, I'd already completed Episode 2 two years ago. I came in with the expectation of refreshing myself on the compelling world that the Ukiyo team have crafted while introducing a new team to both Episodes 1 & 2.
What I wasn't expecting was to be hit with the same emotions that consumed me on my first visit - the world of The Crumbling Prince is one that asks you to meet it halfway and invest yourself into its story, but it needn't bother asking.
My previous review goes more into detail for what to expect on your first visit, so I'll use this as an opportunity to lessen one of my prior criticisms revolving around the duty of the Mask of the Sun, having taken its less prominent features for granted my first time around. One I didn't mention, but am glad to have seen is how well the Mask of the Moon does in this chapter, which I have faith will continue into the next adventure.
For fear of spoilers, the only other advice I feel safe giving is that the story both resolves the Spring chapter wonderfully while leaving you and yours chomping at the bit for Winter.
I would be remiss, however, if I didn't use this opportunity to thank the amazing staff of Ukiyo Melbourne. To Conor, Michael and Beth for their proactive yet customer-friendly approach to the ongoing Covid pandemic and correspondence with us every step of the way to ensure the safety of all involved, thank you all.
Finally, and most importantly, a hearty thank you goes to the warm and outgoing Sandy, our host for our adventure, for going above and beyond to ensure we had a truly outstanding game and for the wonderful tea.
It's been said before but it bears repeating - this journey is without a doubt one of THE 'must do's of Melbourne.

The whole space is meticulously crafted - even from the waiting room/antechamber, we feel a sense of separation from the outside world, which only escalates inside the the crumbling prince's garden. My feeling was that there was no need or pressure to escape the room - rather, this room was a mesmerising escape from reality. Our host Sandy was fantastic - impeccable service and timing.

me and a couple of my friends went to ukiyo for one of their birthdays to do part one to deep space. The host was incredibly good at giving the brief to it all, and the experience was packed full of choices, challenges and a couple fun characters who guided us along the way. The experience made you completely embody your role and we knew that we had to go back for part 2, which was just as enjoyable and we had an absolute blast. it’s the perfect day or night out for a smaller group of friends. 11/10 would highly recommend

Absolutely love Ukiyo's Crumbling Prince 1 and 2. Did the second part the other day and it's just so fun being in their world. I highly recommend them to anyone who finds conventional escape rooms too formulaic or competitive. Story is the focus and the puzzles follow. Can't wait to do the new and improved Deep Space!

The experience is extremely immersive from the second you step inside of the building. The friendly staff are incredibly helpful and aid the immersion. Deep space dark lets you choose how the story plays out. This is an amazing experience, would highly recommend coming here when you have the time to. 11/10

Don't be fooled - Ukiyo Melbourne is not your average escape room. What you'll experience is unique and exciting. It's not a game, it's a journey and the choices you make can be pivotal to your survival and success. Don't have any expectations about this, just get ready to immerse yourself and enjoy the environment on offer. Highly recommended - already bought our tickets for the next chapter and we can't wait!! Just. DO IT.

Hi, I will be a solo traveller when I come to Melbourne is April. Can 1 person do this attraction?
Written 20 January 2023
Hi All. I have a group of four, aged 11. Are they able to do the experience?
Written 9 January 2020
Hi Jess,
While they could have a go at it, I think this escape room might be suited to older individuals. Some of the riddles/challenges can be quite difficult. However if these kids are no stranger to escape rooms, they might be suitable. You could always email the place directly to see how younger people might have faired in the past, the staff are very honest and friendly.

How do we get there using public transport? We are holidaying in Melbourne and staying at Southbank in early July. We are a family of 3, 2 adults and 15 year old will it be suitable for that number? Thank you!
Written 1 June 2019
Thanks for reaching out!
You can catch the 1 or 6 tram from Flinders Street Station. That will take you up the the Moreland Rd/Holmes St stop which is less than a minutes walk from Ukiyo.
The other option is catching a train to Moreland Station and walking down Moreland Rd for 10min.
3 players would be perfectly fine
Cheers,
Michael

I was just enquiring whether you would allow a family of five ages 8, 10 and 12 and two adults participate in the crumbling prince? Understand it’s a 4 player experience, but whether it’s flexible for a extra player.
Written 8 April 2019
Unfortunately, the Crumbling Prince experience is made specifically with four players in mind. The ages are absolutely suitable, but I don't think they'll be able to accommodate an extra player.
Written 17 April 2019
Hi Deborah,
The Crumbling Prince can take kids from about the age of five but a parent guardian needs to take part. It's a great experience for kids as to them it feels even more real. They get immersed super quick so it's a really surreal experience for them :)
If you have any further questions, or want more detail, please don't hesitate to ask!
Cheers,
Michael

Is Episode 2 out? As one of the first to experience the uniqueness of Ukiyo, we’ve been dying to fly back to Melb to continue our adventure. But while some reviews cite an episode 2, the website and bookings only work for part 1...
Written 5 March 2019
Hi!
tmgacutan is correct. Episode 2 is open for Early Access. That means prize winners, staff, Ukiyo team family and friends etc. Early Access will probably go for about two weeks and then we'll be open to the public :)
Cheers,
Michael
