Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.

Superb integration of H&M boutique into an important building of the yesteryear. With the ladies section placed right at the entrance, in a double volume space. The rest of the spaces are treated sensitively so as to showcase the spatial flow as well as the intricate details of the original architecture.

Melbourne's GPO building is a beautiful shopping centre. The architectural value of the building is great and it looks stunning. There are several shops inside.

Visited on Sunday 4th March. While we were in the Bourke Street Mall we ducked into the old GPO Building to have a look, I can remember back in the 1970's when I worked in the city queueing up at lunch time to buy stamps, what a change inside, now a clothing shop. Good to see the building still being used today.

I visited here last week to purchase some shorts. The building has seen some troubled times in its past, however, has been restored to a former glory. It’s nice to see it being used and open to the public.

I absolutely love shopping at the historical GPO building, the architectural features are stunning originally built in 1859 & was used formally as the General Post Office for Melbourne until 1992. It was later developed as a shopping arcade with numerous high end boutique style shops , offices & cafes. Its located on the corner of Bourke Street Mall & Elizabeth Street .

The old GPO building is stunning and right in Melbourne's heart. The building is now a shopping centre but upon entering and when walking around the perimeter there are some photographs and plaques showing the building in former times. Shopping aside, I really love this building. The shops and cafes are a bonus!

Worthy of a visit if only for the architecture and atmosphere of Burke Street Mall. Sit at the cafes which are on the Elizabeth St. side with a coffee and people watch whilst listening to the music or wander around and look at shops. There's free WiFi available and smokers can get their fix near the small cafe on the verandah at the corner of Burke and Elizabeth Sts.

I love the colonnade that surrounds the building on its street frontages. It was a favourite meeting place for youth in the 1960s. The main postal hall from the old Post Office is now a clothing store, but you can still see much of the original architecture. It is worth a look even if you intend no shopping.

General Post Office (GPO) is an architecturally brilliant renaissance revival building of the former postal hall. It is absolutely amazing with a beautiful arcade along Elizabeth Street (perfect for taking amazing photos). HM is the main tenant of the building and if you want budget disposable fashion and homewares it is definitely worth visiting.
There are some nice food stores also which are nice though can get fairly busy.
If you like architecture and history it is definitely a building worth seeing, I live in Melbourne and work in the CBD so pass by often and my breath is still taken away by how beautiful the building is.
