Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.

Main shopping destination in city center
The Bourke Street Mall is an exciting shopping destination in central Melbourne. The main retail department stores are Myer and David Jones. They are both well-stocked with everything from classy apparel to luxury goods. There are lots of shops to choose from, including H&M in the former GPO. There are usually several buskers to provide entertainment.

Quite a big and popular mall. It is at the city centre, easily accessible. There are lots of stores available hence I would recommend visiting.

Mostly pedestrianised, however, we had to get use to the amount of trams that use it as well, all the big names are here, which makes it very popular with visitors.

Food was really good but the restaurant have taken 2 x payments for the same meal. I pointed this out at the time after noticing the duplicated transaction on my card app. In spite of 3 further visits I am still waiting to be reimbursed for their ‘mistake’. Only one lady (Suman) has demonstrated any degree of customer care; the manager of the restaurant has not responded to 3 x separate emails which quite frankly is appalling, especially as we had the meal on December 22nd. Quite frankly the way Vapiano have dealt with this is totally unacceptable 😡

Bourke St Mall is the retailing hub of Melbourne. The flagship Myer Department store hosts the famous Christmas windows, which have been a highlight of the festive season for generations of Melbourne children. The up-market David Jones department store is another well-known feature of the Mall. H&M occupies the former General Post Office. There are many other retail attractions, including the historic Royal Arcade.

Visited on Tuesday 30th August. Not that appealing as a place to go, too many people rushing around and the trams running through the middle, give it a miss.

This is the true 'central point' of the Melbourne Central Business District, with the highlight being the iconic Myer Melbourne flagship department store that is on six levels (seven when Santaland is open pre-Christmas).

Myer has a huge range (including sports equipment and clothing in the basement) of homewares, kitchen and entertainment equipment, ladies', mens' and children's clothing plus on the ground floor, a beauty section that will please most women.

It often has sales but even outside of this it stocks items no one else does, and prices are fine. There are also two cafes within Myer.

There's a Priceline opposite, and Swanston, Bourke and Elizabeth St trams serve the Mall.

I would consider the Bourke Street Mall as the heart of the city.

The Myer Christmas lights are famous at this location each year.

There is a Myers, David Jones as well as H&M and Zara where my wife loves to frequent.

As my wife loves to shop this time I passed the time away listening to a brillioant busker Dario Zhang playing the violin. He was actually too good to be a busker.
