About
Birdland in Melbourne is called Bird's Basement. After 32 years of operations, for the first time Birdland extends it’s banner outside New York to Melbourne. Melbourne is very proud to be the host of Bird’s legacy. Since it opening its doors, this venue has been the host of music legends. Here music comes first, but the quality of food and service are close second. Ticket price varies.

Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.

Great jazz club with an intimate vibe. Many varied acts to see while enjoying a tasty dinner during the show. Fantastic value if you book dinner and show together. Ha e been a number of times now and will definitely be back.

We had a recommendation for this place as a good live music venue. We attended the Jeff Duff tribute to David Bowie evening. The venue is in a basement as the name suggests and the acoustics were good. They serve food too. You book seats online at a table. Highly recommended.

We were fortunate to enjoy the talented and energetic 'Benito Gonzalez Trio'. A wonderful trio who delivered a fab performance.
A range of entrees, sweets etc. are also available to purchase along with beers, wines, non-alcoholic and coffees.
Great to attend as a couple or a group of friends.

Seated comfortable further away from the stage with easy viewing of Karise, we enjoyed our pre-booked meal package and the wonderful performance. It's a small venue that includes catering. Staff had their hands full and trying to catch their attention was at times difficult - that's why I gave 4 stars.

We came to Birds basement not knowing what to expect other than dinner and music but we were blown away with the sound quality, atmosphere and food. We have recommended this place to all of our friends who are heading to Melbourne.

-Inside temp was an uncomfortable 25-26 (as told to me by waiter and bar person). Even the talent on stage sweated and complained and fanned herself the whole night.
-Ladies toilets stunk of raw sewage which I even smelled on approaching the door. Ghastly.
-Worst cocktail I’ve ever had in my life. Cost $22-24? Bar person admitted the recipe required their worst rum out of the three they have on offer. He kindly tried to fix it but wouldn’t replace it with anything else without charging me.
-Show was about an hour long only!
-My heart broke this night. Saw legendary Renee Geyer for the first time. Disaster of a night. Audience members were walking out in a steady stream throughout the performance. Renee picked on her musicians and mostly audience members relentlessly. Initially we laughed thinking it was part of the show, but she was personal and she was grumpy. Said she couldn’t tell if one person was a man or woman, called another person large and pillowy (and expanded on these terms), another person had an embryonic brain. Anyone walking out was called out by Renee. She’d stop in the middle of a song and complain about anything and everything. Eventually some audience members shouted “Sing!” as we weren’t getting any songs. At one point she asked us to call out song requests. She literally shouted No! No! No! No! repeatedly at every request. Like a cross school teacher. Many of her hits were off the table. The night was a shambles. She even refused to come on stage after being introduced. There was an awkward silence after the applause dies down -for a few minutes! Her first words were not “Good evening or Hi” but “How Annoying!”. She took affront to being told she had 2 minutes before stage time she said. By being rebellious she only punished her ticket buying loyal audience. At the very end I think she realised what a terrible show it was and finally said “Thank you. I love and respect my audience”. That’s not what we and others saw. Too little too late. We wanted to leave too but like chicken’s didn’t want her to berate us as we walked out. I’ve loved Renee’s music since my teens and I feel sad that I wouldn’t buy tickets to see her again. Actually I wouldn’t see anyone at Birds Basement again.

We've been to Bird's Basement quite a few times and each time it just gets better and better. We saw Nestor Torres, a jazz flautist, recently. Torres was fantastic and he held the attention of everyone in the audience. And what a band he had with him! We enjoyed the show so much we went back again, on their last night - again, fabulous. I'll be watching Karise Eden from the comfort of my home, on my app, as the show was sold out.

You can't ask for more of this venue as the ambience is great, and the staff are friendly and attentive.

We’ve seen about 6 shows at Birds. It is always good with a cool vibe. We like the bar seats and always order some nibbles and drinks. Friendly service and quality shows. Tickets are not over priced. We will keep going back.

Our first time at this venue - went to see a band and show and enjoy a meal. The quality started from the call to book - brilliant professional service from Jamille (I think was his name) - he even sent a list of parking options for me. On arrival, great polite welcome, the venue is classy and a bit elegant - the service for drinks, lovely, the meal was above expectations - like the rest of the evening - and the sound was wonderful, seating and whole vibe was just lovely. Impressive at all levels.

We’ve been to Birds Basement around 8 times and this visit it was well below par
It’s a great venue, great sound, super clean and classy but this time we were seated with our back to the stage and spent the evening wondering why we got out of our car in the rain when we could have sat in the car listening to music with the same effect
We paid the top price for tickets as we always do but their seating plan was just hopeless this night with many others having their backs to the stage as well
It’s not that difficult to organize table and chairs so everyone can see
The food is delicious but so overpriced it makes the MCG look good value and the servings are small
On the way home we decided that we decided to never return to Birds and to just frequent the older style halls, venues and pubs to view live music where you can see more and where they look after us better
