About
Every Year during the Labour Day weekend in Melbourne, the Yarra river prepares for one of the oldest community festivals : the Moomba Festival. This carnivalesque festival starts with an annual parade of floats, designed by the whole community and accompanied by dancers, performers and school kids. During the 4 day festival there is music, performances, food and the amazing Birdman Rally, where people design homemade flying devices and fly them out into the river to raise money for charity. There is a King and Queen of the parade and the event ends with spectacular fireworks above the Yarra River.

The area
Neighbourhood: South Melbourne
South Melbourne hosts the city’s oldest continuous market, founded in 1867. Rows of neatly arranged fruit, vegetables and flowers splash yellows, greens and reds along the entire perimeter, where the whole neighbourhood gathers for Saturday feasts. Inside the hall, shoppers hover over the mouth-watering displays of delicatessens and specialty food shops. Further in, a bazaar full of giftware, clothing, and kitchen utensils completes the scene. Take a break to walk the wide and shady streets and stroll along the Victorian-era heritage terrace houses. But return to the market in time for some paella, simmering in three large frypans on the footpath and served straight onto your plate.

As unsuspecting tourists, we stumbled upon this festival by following the crowds! We loved the vibe with the carnival stretching along both banks of the Yarra River, the Moomba Masters waterski championships taking place on the river and the Parade along Birdwood Ave. There was so much to see. We later discovered that this is an annual event, held over Labour Weekend, and is Australia's largest free community festival drawing millions of visitors! There were other activities like nightly fireworks and a Birdman competition which we did not see. It was wonderful to experience this Melbourne Festival!

To have a day out is one thing what you get is another.
Very disappointed,
I can't understand some things that were included didn't make sense
Alot of dance schools I'm happy for the youngies involved nice to see but it was mostly just that maybe 2 three floats, three four countries that's it.
Back years ago it was full on big colourful crazy floats alot of countries involved plus super floats a variety of different things exciting things. I'm glad i went back then
Compared to know no comparison very poor just slapt together throw in this bit of that that will do people dont know any better
It wasted my time saw nothing only good thing was fire brigade and SES good on that well worth the acknowledgement.
Rest pointless I'm mean bees on sticks REALLY come on.

The Moomba Festival is an excuse to have fun, it's Melbourne's own festival with amusement as it's keynote. Perennial favorites include the Moomba Parade, led by the Moomba King and Queen, and the Birdman competition. All activities are free. Moomba will be held on the long weekend from Friday 10 April to Monday 13 April 2023. It's actually Labour Day, but no-one notices the switch.

The Birdman contest is the highlight of Moomba. Most Birdmen don't get far, but its fun to watch. The contest is held at Birrarung Marr on the banks of the River Yarra as part of Moomba, Melbourne's free festival. Moomba is held on the Labour Day weekend. The Birdman contest will be held on 12 March 2023.

Moomba is a community festival held in Melbourne on the Labour Day weekend. There are lots of events held in conjunction with Mooma -- they are all free. One of the most popular events is the Birdman Competition, where contestants attempt to fly over the Yarra River; it's more fun than serious. It provides great entertainment; there's also a Mooma King and Queen. Melbourne has the reputation of being a staid place, Moomba is the time when Melburnians let their hair down.

Moomba is Australia's largest free community carnival. Moomba is held on the Labour Day weekend, from the preceeding Friday to the second Monday in March. It's all for fun. The Moomba Parade, led by the Moomba King and Queen, is a favourite event, drawing thousands of spectators. The Birdman event is hilarious, not all competitors are entirely serious. There's water skiing on the Yarra and lots of games and rides for the youngsters. As they say, "it's all for fun."

Moomba is a festival. It's time to have fun. One of the best-loved features in the Moomba Parade; kids love it. The Birdman Competition is also popular; its held on the Yarra River. The idea is to fly as far as you can in unpowered flight -- many entrants are not entirely serious. Another event on the River is the waterskiing competition. Melbourne has the reputation for being a bit dull, but Moomba is time to let off steam. There are many events that allow people to have a good time; it's an idea that's here to stay. Moomba is held on the Labour Day long weekend. This year it will be 11 to 13 March 2022.

A very low key event this year with no Parade, No Water Skiing and no Birdman contest. The weather didn't help on the Monday as it was lashing it down. More like a fair recently. The musical acts were quite good though.

Melbourne has the reputation for being, so the city elders decided to have a festival of fun over the Labour Day long weekend. This year it will be 4 October 2021. It is truly a festival for all the family. The Moomba Parade -- which always has a King and Queen -- goes down Swanston St. The Yarra River is always a focus of the festival, in particular the water skiing and also the Birdman contest. The winning Birdman must go as far he can from the launching pad on the river in his home-made "Flying Machine." it's always the most hilarious event of Moomba.

Melbourne has the reputation for being staid, so Moomba is a chance for people to let their hair down. The festival runs from Friday to the Monday on the Labour Day weekend. The Moomba Parade always draws a big crowd. The Yarra River is a drawcard, with water-skiing and the ever-popular Bird Man contest. The best thing about Moomba is that it's free, including the fireworks.
