A year in the planning after wanting to explore the far corner of the South West National Park and a recommendation by fellow travellers on our previoys visit to Tasmania we booked the 4 day "Escape to Port Davey" with Tasmanian Boat Charters.
The flight from Cambridge (Hobart) across the Arthur Range gave us a first birds eye view of what would be our home for the next 4 days / 3 nights and the excitement and adventure just got better and better. The team at TBC had sent us top tips and enquired about our likes and dislikes to best match the guests' expectations with abilities andweather conditions. We had a mixed bag of the latter but it did not detract from our enjoyment. As a former boss of Tas Parks & Wildlife we could not have asked for a better guide than Peter, he really brought this special place and its history to life. Pieter, our skipper, was welcoming, found the best anchoring spots, and was professional and resourceful when our plumbing developed a problem mid trip. Third in the terrific trio of our crew was Courtney, our amazing chef who was brilliant in accommodating my special dietary requests.
The Bathurst Harbour / Port Davey area is a truly unique place with history, wildlife and unspoiled nature at every turn. Being able to explore it on the Odalisque and the two tethers meant we visited places very few people get to see. Our time past far too quickly and our flight back from Melaluca airstrip took us along the South Coast.
A big thank you to all the team st Tasmanian Boat Charters for making this excursion such a wonderful one.

The remote, beautiful, serene south west wilderness World Heritage area of Tasmania is difficult to access and the only way is boating in, bush walking in or flying in to the area in a light aircraft. We flew into Melaleuca and boarded the Odalisque with owner Pieter van der Woude as our host. We had originally booked for 4 days but extended our trip to 7 days after only 2 days. There is so much to see and experience - we walked up peaks to experience 360 degree views of Port Davey and Bathurst Harbour, we trecked along remote tracks, we crept up rivers and gorges in the dingy, we idled along stunning beaches, explored rain forests on foot and lonely grave sites, viewed the vacated Clayton's cottage, the late Denny King's wilderness retreat at Melaleuca and the amazing museum dedicated to him. We watched orange bellied parrots, a kingfisher, sea eagles and land birds. We saw an eagle nesting site, aboriginal middens and petroglyphs, and colourful native frogs. We identified animal footprints in the sand. Our expert guide Peter Marmion constantly showed us native foliage and wildlife and explained the history of the region in great detail - his knowledge of the area is immense. The Odalisque was very warm and comfortable and the irresistible, wide array of fresh food and Tasmanian wine was superb - the chef for our trip, Courtney, was hugely entertaining and catered for all food preferences. This precious trip is an absolute delight and something new is around every bend.

Travelling along the east coast looking up at the cliff structures instead of looking
down & seeing the many capes, waterfalls & bays was a highlight. Being able to moore in Chinamans Bay & walk the southern end of Maria Island. The hove to anchorages were sheltered & peaceful places to sleep at night. The tenders to get us ashore were very comfortable & made it very easy to get ashore to see wombats, kangaroos, wallabies, swans, honey eaters, herons & many other small birds which provided photographic opportunities of unique Tasmanian wildlife. Catching tuna which were being chased by seals which showed us up close how skilful they are in their hunting prowess. Albatross flying over the boat while dolphins raced along beside us, keeping pace with Odalisque. Everything was top class on board with Chef Sharon providing delicious food & the delightful guide, Peter Marmion who is so well informed about everything to do with Tasmania. Skipper Pieter is so knowledgeable with all things seafaring making sure we were comfortable & happy. A wonderful time enjoyed by all. Jennifer & Ron

Thank you for your feedback Jennifer & Ron - it was an absolute pleasure having you both aboard.
You're right, it's a very different perspective being able to look up at the coastline. We're glad you had such a great time, and some great encounters with the wildlife that we see along our shores. I'll pass your feedback onto the rest of the crew!
Cheers,

Odalisque III is an amazing boat. The experience of Pieter and the On Board design team has shone through as they have captured everything you would want (and more) to make the voyage a comfortable and memorable one.
Due to weather, we didn't manage to utilise the outside area as much as we would have hoped, but having the large expansive windows in the two different lounging areas allowed you to still feel immersed in the scenery when you were on board. In your bedroom, if you left your blinds up, it was breathtaking to wake up in the morning and watch the views through the window or lay awake at night and watch the stars.
Special thanks must be given to our wonderful crew: Matt, Mark, BJ, Nancye and Courtney. They were an exceptional team that worked well together. Their passion and knowledge for the South West certainly showed and their generosity in sharing this enriched our trip. They never appeared to tire from our barrage of questions and were great fun to be with on and off the boat.
It was always a pleasure to deal with Alice or Jess in the office who helped us navigate our 'changed' booking over the past few years. The boat, the crew and the scenery were definitely worth the wait. It will be a trip I remember for a longtime.

This was my 9th. visit to Port Davey over a time span of 50 years, the area is still beautiful and unspoiled compared to my 1st. visit all those years ago, whilst I had been many times on this trip I got to visit areas I had never been to before, Port Davey is huge and it would take weeks to see it all. The crew were very professional and good ambassadors for the region (it was a tribute to their caring and professionalism they checked the positioning of the bush walkers dinghies at the narrows and would have been prepared to reposition a dingy if it was out of sequence), I am in accord with what others have written in their reviews, the only thing I can add is the food and wines were excellent, upon my return I purchased similar wines, the Bellevue Estate Shiraz from the McLaren Vale [The only non Tasmanian wine they had was exceptional]

Thanks for joining us Terry - that's hit the nail on the head with exactly what keeps us so passionate about the Southwest. That it hasn't changed in those 50 years! Glad you also enjoyed our wines... they're an important part of any expedition.

As soon as you step on the seaplane, the adventure and expedition starts there. Landing into the South-West and the scenery is simply magnificent. The vessel was moored near Mount Rugby with an eagle soaring above us when we boarded. How perfect?
Odalisque III design has had a lot of planning and execution of truly quality fittings everywhere. A six-star vessel which was extremely comfortable and with environmental protection taking a high priority in its operation.
Itineraries are very flexible. We had serious walkers and not so serious walkers in our group and all were well catered for with activities (if you choose one) suggested during the evening debrief before. Weather plays in important part in that planning. We were, after all in “Expedition mode”.
We loved everywhere we visited including Clayton’s corner, Bramble Cove, Spain Bay, Bond Bay, past the Breaksea Islands, up the Davey River, Old River and finally Melaleuca and we didn’t cover everything this remote region has to offer!
Either way, when you return to the vessel the attention and catering provided was none other than first class (thank you Alice, BJ and Carl). Having spent some time in the maritime industry, I thoroughly enjoyed the open bridge and having a yarn with skipper Matt.
Also thank you to Peter, a wealth of knowledge whether it be avifauna (we did see orange bellied parrots), flora and geology. Also, thanks for explaining more about our Tasmanian indigenous communities that I never knew about before.
The interaction with guests and crew was awesome with a lot of laughter and fun over the five days. The trip was truly engaging. We were sad to leave and wrap up a fantastic break away from civilisation, albeit on our own seaplane heading to Hobart!

Thank you for sharing your incredible experience with us! Your adventure aboard Odalisque III sounds truly unforgettable from the moment you stepped onto the seaplane.
We're thrilled to hear that you found the vessel's design and fittings to be of the highest quality and that environmental protection was a top priority. Flexibility in itineraries is key, and we're glad to hear that all members of your group, whether serious walkers or not, were well catered for with activities tailored to their preferences.
Exploring the remote regions of South-West Tasmania is indeed breathtaking, and we're delighted that you enjoyed every stop along the way. It's wonderful that our crew, including Alice, BJ, Carl, and Skipper Matt, provided first-class attention and catering throughout your journey.

It's always bittersweet to leave such a fantastic break away from civilization, but we hope your memories of this journey stay with you for a lifetime. We'd love to welcome you back aboard for another adventure in the future!

This wonderful adventure begins on Hobart harbour as you board the seaplane which takes you to the luxurious odalisque moored in Bathurst harbour. The professional crew take care of everything during your time on board. Wonderful adventures await and you can choose from, for example, a 3 hour walk or a relaxing tender ride exploring the area. The food and drinks on board showcase Tasmanian produce. You are kept busy with morning and afternoon activities but of course you are also welcome to rest on board, read, paint or play games. The crew are very astute to the varying capabilities of each passenger. This remote area of Tasmania is beautiful and the Odalisque is the perfect way to explore it in luxury. Pieter, the owner, knows the area extremely well and his crew of Chrissie, Paul, Sam and Courtney made sure our every desire was fulfilled.

This was our third trip to the beautiful Southwest and was certainly the most luxurious. It was a great experience from our seaplane flight from the Hobart waterfront to the silky-smooth landing in Bathurst Harbour and transfer to the beautiful Odalisque III.
The Odalisque III, a vessel purpose-built for comfort and luxury, was our home for the duration of the trip. It provided us with sumptuous accommodation and exquisite chef-prepared meals that celebrated Tasmanian ingredients. Our evenings were enhanced by an array of Tasmanian wines, gins, and whiskies, adding a touch of local flavour to our experience.
Our crew Matt, Jess, Courtney, Bonnie and Jimmy were absolutely wonderful and really enhanced the experience.
Our explorations extended beyond the vessel. We delved into the scenic vistas of Bathurst Harbour’s coastline, enjoyed an indulgent Tasmanian gourmet beach picnic, ventured out beyond the Breaksea Islands, and experienced the serenity of the Old River, Melaleuca, Clayton's Corner, and TV Hill. The variety of activities, coupled with the serene and stunning locations we visited, made this trip an extraordinary blend of relaxation and adventure, creating memories that Di and I will cherish for a lifetime.

I write to endorse the reviews of other guests - this is an extraordinary opportunity to spend a serious and memorable time in the world heritage Tasmanian wilderness. You will find the best and most knowledgeable guides, high standard ensuite accommodation and fabulous local food and drinks.
Good times abound onboard and ashore with daily hikes and/or tender tours and explanations of local history and the uniqueness of the area. Daily hikes are no more than 3-4 hours and can be adjusted to the standards of the guests. Don’t be daunted!
Guests all reflect on the privilege that comes from exploring pristine areas that are so isolated from everyday life.
It is an expensive tour and you need to have an interest in the wilderness and hiking, but when you take into account the seaplane trips in and out, the quality of our guides and staff generally, the quality of the programme, the quality of our accommodation, and the quality of food and drinks available you form the view very quickly that this is a unique experience and worth the cost.
Many thanks to Pieter, Peter, Jess, Marcelle and our wonderful chef Courtney for bringing this opportunity to life in a way that we will remember forever.

I recently had a wonderful mini break to Tasmania’s East Coast on Odalisque 111. From the moment I was welcomed aboard I was made to feel at home. Our skipper Matt was fabulous along with Jess our hostess, chef Sharon and knowledgeable guides Peter and Doozie. All amenities were luxurious and along with magnificent Tasmanian food and wine made for an amazing trip. The scenery up the East Coast was spectacular and I would highly recommend you book an East Coast Escape with On Board.
