Her Story
About
If you enjoyed Louisa's Walk you will equally love Her Story! Also told in Strolling Theatre, Her Story tells the tale of another convict woman - Mary James. Mary was sent to the Female Factory in 1833 for stealing a square of cloth. You will walk through those same gates to meet Mary and hear Her Story. Be prepared to laugh and cry as the harsh conditions endured by convict women unfold. BUT you will get to dob in the brutal overseer and get your own back!!! Visit the Cascades Female Factory which is the most important site for convict women in Australia. Let expert actors bring this site to life. You will leave with an emotional connection to Mary James but also a good understanding of daily life in the notorious Cascades Female Factory. Meet Mary and hear Her Story.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A story that needs to be known..delivered impeccably and realistically so that it 'tugged at the heartstrings' and brought to life the harrowing reality of life for thousands of convict women brought to Van Diemens Land. Another part of our history that is only just being learned...our kids need to know the 'womens' story' alongside what they learn at school. The two actors were excellent. Definitely a must in any trip to Hobart.

Thank you SO much for taking the time to write this Review for our dramatisation of a convict woman's story at the Cascades Female Factory at 12 Noon every day. While some people only pay $8 for the guide yourself around experience and only leave a one star review - you chose the RIGHT option and elected to do Her Story (or the Heritage tour - you get what you pay for!) . Schools LOVE Her Story and we are happy to report that more and more schools are coming to this experience! It is SO important that girls and young women know the struggle that has been fought (and partially won) for female emancipation - your review will help to contribute to this. Thank you, Judith & Chris.

We were fortunate to arrive at the Cascade Women’s Factory shortly before Her Story was scheduled. The story line and the performances were excellent. The performance was very engaging and we also learned a lot about the prison. Much more effective than a tour.

Thank you so much JMK for taking the time to write this Review for our drama Her Story. Our wonderful play does seem to touch people's hearts and we find the story stays with them for many years. Now, sadly we have had to close due to this world crisis in which we are living - who saw this coming apart from Bill Gates? All the best to you and safe travels! Judith & Chris.

We really enjoyed this reenactment of the story of a females prisoner life from back in the early 1800's who was transported to Van Diemens Land from England. The unjust treatment of these woman gives a lot to be desired and should be seen by everyone. The two actors were very professional and had their lines down pat. The lady dressed in period costume which was lovely. The gentleman played two parts and the only criticism we would have was that there should have been a more visual costume change more than just a hat. Also maybe loose the black sport runners for some black leather boots! ( It became slightly distracting when you want to visualise the actual era you were to be taken back to) . But overall it was really engaging and we loved it thank you.

Hello Leanne, Thanks so much for leaving this terrific Review for our production of Her Story! We are so glad you enjoyed our performance and have taken the time to tell others to come and hear the women's story via this platform. Thanks too for the constructive comments about our costuming - we love it when visitors can give us any feedback about how we can improve Her Story, in any way, to make it more impactful for you. We can't do much about the shoes (prescription footwear) but I have tried to blacken the flashy bits out. Chris also now wears a different coat for the doctor and a really bright cravat which creates a good point of difference. Thank you SO much! Judith & Chris.

Thanks so much Team Jaffa for recommending that others experience our drama ,Her Story. It can be a bit challenging when the temperature climbs but it's always rewarding to tell the story of Mary James to appreciative audiences such as yourselves. Warm Regards, Judith & Chris.

This is a must do if are touring Hobart Tasmania and can fit it into your day. Actors play the role of Mary McLauchlan (one of the original female convicts) and a male Doctor/overseer assigned to the Female Factory set up on the site at Degraves St South Hobart.
The remains of the original Factory are basic except for 1 remaining cottage built in 1850 which was occupied by the Matron. Her Story provides a very powerful insight into the harsh treatment of the female convicts and their babies and makes the tour really come alive.
Well worth the extra entry fee. The factory is a little hard to find as it's down a one way street but look for signage to Cascades Gardens and you will find the Female Factory. The roaming show starts at 12 noon.

Thank you so much for writing this detailed Review. It is actually Mary James's story we tell but she is a fictitious name applied to a real woman's story. We have never felt comfortable about using her real name in case she has descendants living here. Mary McLauchlan is the name of the first woman to be hanged in Van Diemens Land and we used to tell her story down at the Penitentiary Chapel. Thank you too for giving directions to find the Cascades Female Factory - a most helpful Review. Warm Regards, Judith & Chris.

We were so glad we did the tour and Her Story as they both brought to life the conditions the female convicts and children endured inside the high stone walls.
Her Story engaged the audience in our group and encouraged interaction with ease.
A young girl in our group responded and communicated beautifully, which added to
the sensitive way the story was portrayed.
The time between the tour and Her Story was perfect too.

Thank you so much for your very positive review for our dramatic production Her Story. We are so glad you found the visit to this World Heritage Site enjoyable and informative. It is important to take either the Heritage Tour or Her Story instead of just the guide yourself around tour as the site does not interpret itself adequately. Thank you for making the right choice and getting the fullest information about this important site. Warm Regards. Judith & Chris.

This was a highlight in a week of highlights on our recent trip to Tasmania where we focused on convict heritage of Tasmania. The Cascades site is well structured but bringing the stories to life brings a real joy to a fascinating location.

If you are in Hobart and plan to visit Port Arthur - you should also have to look at Cascades and come at 12 to see "Her Story"

Dear Shane H, Thank you for leaving this review! We are so keen that people visit both Port Arthur AND the Cascades Female Factory on any visit to Hobart. The men's story is indeed fascinating but so is the women's. Your Review will help to draw more visitors to this most significant site for convict women. Thank You! Judith & Chris.

Absolutely loved this dramatic presentation of what is a very dark history lesson. Fantastic learning, excellent use of the historic space. Bring a hat and sunnies if the sun is out and be prepared to stand for an hour

We are so glad you enjoyed our production of Her Story at the Cascades Female Factory. Thank you so much for leaving such a positive Review and also for your recommendation about the hat and sunnies! Likewise in winter; wrap up and/or bring an umbrella for Tassie's weather conditions...... Warm Regards, Judith & Chris.

Very powerful telling of the plight of a female imprisoned. Really disturbing account of life that was well acted. Don't waste your money on an unaccompanied tour, go for this presentation instead.

Hello Simon, Thank you for leaving this Review for our dramatic presentation Her Story - we are so glad you found it powerful and moving. Thank you too for recommending that visitors pay the extra and see either our drama or a Heritage Tour - the $5.00 do-it-yourself tour cannot possibly bring this site to life and visitors leave with little information and thus a very underwhelming experience. Warm Regards, Judith & Chris.
