The Theatre Royal opened in 1837, with major additions in 1850 and 1890, and remains a living centre for the performing arts. It presents live theatre, contemporary music, dance and entertainment. Dubbed by Noel Coward "a dream of a theatre", the Theatre Royal is Australia's oldest working theatre and one of its most beautiful treasures.

This is a beautiful tiny replica, in all its finery and detail, of larger theatres around the world. Just shrink La Scala, for instance, and you have the cosy intimacy of the Theatre Royal! Lovely for a quick visit but best when you're there to...More

Thanks for your review and comments Helen, we agree that a great way to experience the Theatre is to come to a show. Visitors to Hobart should always check out what's on when they're in town - we love welcoming visitors !

This is the oldest surviving theatre in Australia and it has one of the best ambiances of any similar sized venues. It is cosy with a great view of the stage. It is plush and the only theatre I can remember being anywhere near as...More

Great, classic heritage style theatre with close proximity to stage. Although small compared to other capital city theatres it provides excellent acoustics and provides a much more intimate theatre experience.

Not always easy to find, but the tour backstage in this the oldest continuously open theatre in Australia is an absolute delight. Our tour guide, a 'friend' of the theatre was warm, funny and very knowledgeable. Tales of the many stars (from Lawrence Olivier to...More

Every seat on ground level offers great viewing. Upstairs it can be a bit hit and miss due to the viewing angle. We've watched musical, plays and comedy shows. Always a pleasant experience.

Laurence Olivier's favourite theatre. Beautifully restored a very impressive intimate space. If you can organise a show definitely do so. Make sure you checkout the website to see if you can do the very entertaining tour

You can see and hear from every seat in the theatre. Beautifully painted and restored with very comfortable seats. The foyer is intimate but has a good selection of drinks and nibbles and you always seem to meet someone you know! A fabulous night out.
