About
The Theatre Royal opened in 1837, with major additions in 1850 and 1890, and remains a living centre for the performing arts. It presents live theatre, contemporary music, dance and entertainment. Dubbed by Noel Coward "a dream of a theatre", the Theatre Royal is Australia's oldest working theatre and one of its most beautiful treasures.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We have given this place a shot a couple of times, as we usually really enjoy going to the theatre.
But we aren’t going to throw good money after bad. We won’t be back.
It’s a dreadful little theatre with a tiny stage, super cramped, basic and in need of repairs. And the productions were so average ..... obviously anything of quality agrees with us - i.e.. best avoided.
And quite frankly, the theatre goers surrounding us leaved a lot to be desired as far as common theatre etiquette. NEVER AGAIN!

No more waiting outside, plenty of room inside to wait for people, with a large area for ticketing, bar and cloak room now added. Been to see a few things recently- ballet, live music and comedy, all were good, temperature within the theatre was excellent and staff helpful.

The theatre royal is the oldest theatre in Australia, it is absolutely stunning with all the old period features and beautiful chandeliers. The only thing if you are going to see a show some of the seats in the upper stalls have restricted views and the wooden seats get a bit uncomfortable.

Fantastic theatre, amazing decor. I prefer the dress circle front row if I can get it. If not go the third row (it has a better view than the 2nd row).

Over the years I and my wife have attended many events at this wonderful historic theatre which is located in the midst of Hobart. The seating arrangements are a little quaint - from a previous century and whether from the stalls to the "gods" the views are excellent as indeed are the acoustics - there is the odd seat that sits neatly behind a pole! To be there is an experience worth the price of admission.

It is without doubt the most intimate, charming and well preserved theatre anywhere in Australia. A "must see" when you are in Hobart. It's exciting to realise that this lovely old theatre has been kept in such a beautiful state. Even if you are not a regular theatre patron you will be surprised and thankful that this wonderful gem has reinstated to it's former glory. Highly recommended.

A beautiful, elegant and intimate theatre. The theatre Royal has old world charm great acoustic. The red velvet seats are very comfy to sit in to watch a show. The amazing stair case is breath taking. If you are going to watch a show I recommend sitting in the premium seats it costs a little more but well worth the money. Mt daughter and I went to watch the ballet there and it was an amazing night. After the show not far to walk to grab a little something to eat. Also car park is in walking distance. Ticks all the boxes.

Australia's oldest theatre - step back in time in this impeccably preserved building - it still retains original elegance and beauty. Step into this theatre and imagine a time of years gone by - but still be thrilled by how it beautifully it fits into today's theatre scene
This will be one of the best theatre experiences you will ever have. The building is so well designed that it doesn't matter where you are seated - you feel you could step onto the stage and the acoustics are amazing. it is small and intimate, wine is served at interval and prior shows - and there is a theatre hotel next door - for meals and an opportunity to sit down and catch up before the show
There are a number of shows throughout the year - local through to international, child - adult.
If you are visiting Hobart - do yourself a favour and visit this beautiful theatre

The Theatre Royal is a lovely quaint little theatre. It has a lovely atmosphere that seems to take you back in time. We saw Celtic Illusion which was ok but the theatre was definitely the star of the show.

Hi, were there any British actresses performing in this theatre in the 1940s? I'm an author, living in Australia, but writng mostly in Czech. I need to know before I use it in the plot of the novel I'm writing. It's a fiction, but partly based on history, so I want it to be reasonably accurate.
Thank you very much!

Yes, as you can see from the previous comment, we are very proud that Vivien Leigh performed here in 'The School for Scandal' with the Old Vic Company in 1948.
