Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Wonderful spot to pop into either during the week or especially on a Sunday when the doors to the hall are open for an exhibition.
Originally built by Lady Jane Franklin in 1842 to bring some culture and civility to the area. The name Acanthe stands for 'blooming valley' and she had it erected as a classic temple form.
You can drive there as there is parking spots (out the front, next to the public toilets or anywhere along the street) or you can catch a bus as there is a bus stop at the entrance. The public toilets have been built only recently so are quite new and clean. There are a couple of seating benches on the land around the hall and the walking track leads all the way to the top of Lenah Valley road which is good for exercise and walking your dog. The public space around the hall also makes a nice little spot to have a picnic.
The hall itself is rather small but makes up for it with charm and ambience.

This little Gallery is a must-see if you are visiting Hobart, Tasmania. It is of interest to both history-buffs and art-lovers. The charming little building was erected in 1842 by the Governor's wife, Lady Jane Franklin, with a view to housing sculptures, paintings, prints and books to foster art-appreciation among the Hobart Town residents. The building is in the neoclassical style, and is the only "glyptothek" in the Southern Hemisphere. After the Franklins left Hobart in 1843 to return to England, the building was neglected. It was used as an apple-packing shed at one stage, then in 1948 it became the home of the Art Society of Tasmania. Since then, it has been used as an art gallery and venue for art classes. The Art Society (founded in 1884) mounts a new exhibition every month, as well as promoting the visual arts through its education program. The Gallery is open at weekends, and is easily accessed by car and public transport from the city centre.

I'm teaching a watercolour workshop here for the local Art Society and it is absolutely wonderful. The building and architecture are impressive for a gallery of it's size and it is located in a peacefully beautiful setting. inside at the time of my visit was a stunning exhibition, which was hung and presented beautifully. I am greatly impressed and , as an artist, full of admiration for those responsible for this wonderful venue, gallery and events held here. Hobart should be very proud.

Lady Franklin Gallery is a beautiful historic art gallery in Lenah Valley with local art. It is open at 11am- 4pm on weekends and run by volunteers. Definitely worth a visit. And there are some lovely short bush walks nearby near the creek.

Each weekend this wonderful building situated in Lenah Valley open its doors to allow the public to view beautiful paintings, drawings and sculptures exhibited by local artists. This low-key place is a little visited relic of the Governor Franklin era. Just one main room inside with a central skylight, it now houses the changing output of the Hobart Arts Society. When we visited the group had produced art on the theme of 'shadows'. The next theme I'm told is going to be 'bright and breezy' and they are expecting to see lots of yachting pictures. Beautiful surrounds, nice people to chat with, some local amateur art and a fascinating building. Recommended if you have the time to look at something off the beaten track.

The Lady Franklin Gallery in Ancanthe Park in Lena Valley is a beautiful and unique place. Built in 1842 for Lady Franklin (wife of the then Governor), it was named "Ancanthe" and is a miniature Greek temple style building, intended to be a museum. After the departure of the Franklins, it was neglected until 1948 when the Art Society of Tasmania took it over. It is open in the weekends and features interesting art exhibitions. It is also a short drive from an entrance to Wellington Park, where a walking track up Mt Wellington begins, so a picnic and walking boots can make this a dual purpose trip.
It is situated in Lena Valley Road (continuation of Augusta Road) and is only a 10 minute drive from the Hobart CBD. It's well worth a visit.

This is a very unique gallery modelled after a Greek temple out in the suburb of Lenah Valley. The current exhibition is a collection of sea scapes by marine artist Roger Imms. . He's a superb artist who has a wonderful ability to make water (especially the ocean) come alive in all its power and beauty. The exhibition runs through February.

Well, who would expect to see a building like this in the middle of a tranquil bushland setting.? Quite unique and with the added bonus of ever-changing exhibitions of beautiful artworks. Add to that a warm welcome from members of the Art Society of Tasmania who are more than happy to share there knowledge of the history of the place as well as the artworks and even a cuppa if you wish.
