We would highly recommend using the Red Decker hop on, hop off buses in Hobart. We were in Hobart for the day as part of a cruise and found the bus drivers to be very friendly and they provided excellent commentary during the trip. The buses ran on time and we could always find a seat. They had put extra buses on due to the cruise ship which meant they arrived every half an hour. We had a fantastic day!

Good overview of city, got my bearings of the city as a whole plus also where specific things are. There's a lot more to this city then you'd think so it's good to get that refresher of things you'd probably read about online and good to visualise it as well when deciding whether you want to go actually see it. Good rundown of city history. Friendly driver. Enjoyed the open top. Pre-recorded commentary plays on the speakers but earphones available to plug into a thingy in front of each seat if hearing isn't the greatest. My hearing is fine but I used the earphones anyway as it blocked out other noises a bit. Well worth the money. Take a hat and sunscreen especially if it's a sunny day. I just did the full round trip, didn't hop or or off but it's a great idea. If you don't have your own car to go to things independently I'd recommend the 48 hr ticket because you could easily fill that time if you were hopping on/off to check out a bunch of things. Enjoy.

Friendly, skilled driver who delivered a very smooth experience.

Stops are well spaced out and the route is interesting. Perhaps an extension into West Hobart? Certainly looked interesting from the bus.

We started on the first bus of the day at Davy and Elizabeth, just back from the waterfront. Got off at the Botanic Gardens around 10:00,had Devonshire tea in the cafe and a relaxed walk through the gardens before catching the 12:15 bus back to town.

Punctual and also good commentary.

Fare compares very favourably with other tours of this type in HK and Singapore, although I suppose these have free entry to things like the Peak tram included.

Dear adrianrleeds, thank you so much for your review and recommendations. I’m pleased to hear you thoroughly enjoyed your experience onboard. I hope you had a lovely time at the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens too! Thanks for the suggestion regarding an extended route into West Hobart. It’s most helpful to receive passenger input when considering any changes in the future. Thanks again and all the best for the rest of your Hobart holiday. Louise V, Red Decker Company.

We had planned to use the hop on/off bus before we arrived in Hobart but found ourselves walking to the sites as Hobart is so small you can easily do the route yourselves.
We ended up using it on a Saturday afternoon after we visited the Salamanca market to go the the Cascade Brewery. This was around 1.00pm. We mentioned that we were only using it to go to the brewery as we had tours booked for our remaining days but still had to pay the full 1 day rate which was 70.00 for 2 people.
We got to the Cascade Brewery only to find the brewery tours were cancelled due to Covid and you could not have lunch at the restaurant without a booking. So we went there for nothing and had a 1 hour wait for the next bus. Ended up walking back to our hotel which was near the Brooke Street Pier.
Just check that the attractions you want to see are open at these times because with covid you may find they are not.
Brewery tour, Hobart Convict Penitentiary and Female factory were all closed.
Would be nice if they allowed a half day ticket for those getting on after 1.00pm especially as last bus is 4.30pm.

Hello Richard S069, Thank you for the time you have taken to write your review. It is with disappointment that I read your comments. More disappointing that you did not make us aware of your tour experience on the day so that we could have assisted you further. We are all local Tasmanian's and are great at recommending brilliant alternative hop off/hop on locations. Under these circumstances we would have been happy to upgrade your ticket to a 48hr pass giving you an extra day complimentary to revisit the sites you had planned to visit on your first city loop day. I would however recommend taking your specific feedback about Cascade Brewery, The Cascade Female Factory and the Penitentiary Chapel in regards to their opening/ closing status with the sites themselves. Last minute closures of these individual sites on the day/ at the time we believe that we can be accountable for (2 star review). If we are made aware that places are closed (from the sites themselves) we inform our passengers prior to hopping off. If our passengers have travel constraints we also recommend that they ring ahead to their planned lunch location for example to avoid the disappointment you experienced. Although it may appear to be a short distance our 20 city loop bus stops are located on a 26km circular route (longer than the distance of a half marathon!). Great news is, is that our city loop tickets are also the cheapest in Australia! Your tour tickets was valid for 24 hours from when you first boarded the bus. You boarded at 1pm one day you would have until 1pm the following day to use your ticket. This would have given you ample opportunity to revisit the sites you were keen to explore the following day. Sorry this was not made aware to you at the time. We care very much about our customer experiences and due to this offer full tour refunds if our tours do not meet expectations. Please contact our office to organise this. We hope you visit Hobart again soon. Kind regards, Fiona Gregory Tour Manager

Although we didn't get the best of the weather for our trip Greg, our driver up to Mount Wellington, had a great sense of humour and kept us entertained with his information on all things Tasmania and Hobart on the trip up the mountain. The Red Decker bus around Hobart was a great way to see the highlights and as it was a 48 hour pass you could pick out the bits you wanted to see more of on the complete loop and go back to view them the next day if you wanted to. Great value for money.

Dear Zardoz56, thanks for joining us on a tour around Hobart and up to kunanyi/Mt Wellington too! Your review is much appreciated and I’m glad to hear you had an enjoyable time on both tours. I’ll be sure to pass on your compliments to Greg, he’ll be so pleased that you were amused by his sense of humour and entertaining commentary on the way up the mountain. It sounds like you made the most of your 48 hour ticket to explore Hobart’s local attractions too! Thanks again, I hope you had a wonderful stay in Hobart. Louise V, Red Decker Company.

We spent the first hour sitting and waiting at stops 1, 2 and 3 as we had joined the bus on its second half of the tour to the botanical gardens. It then got a lot better and the driver was informative and drove the bus with care and attention. The company had been advised the day before that the cruise ship was coming a day early, which caused several understandable logistical issues but sending out buses with several free seats seemed ridiculous, given the queues, and we were told it was to allow space for others to get back on... we didn't feel this was a true hop on/hop off experience but more of a get on a set time and then get off again. Good to see the sites but would not do it again :-( There is a greyline bus too but not sure how they compare.

Dear estmarcha, thank you for writing us this review, we really appreciate you taking the time to do so. We are very glad that you enjoyed the sites of Hobart, and that you enjoyed your time with your driver. I do apologise that you were left waiting at the start of your travels. Unfortunately, as I am sure you can appreciate, Hobart is a small city with lower visitation than other bigger cities where hop-on hop-off services operate, and sometimes with large cruise ships like on the day you travelled, many people all converge at the same time. We also as you stated had less than 24 hours to cater for the cruise ship which you travelled on, however, feel reassured that we do everything humanly possible in the background on these busier days to accommodate all passengers wanting to travel and aim to provide absolute 100% positive customer experiences at all times. We have extra buses (half-hourly departures instead of hourly and backup busses for busier time slots) and tour booking staff rostered on these days, and we clear queues as fast as we can, and the good news is this does clear promptly. But I am sorry that on the day you travelled you were left waiting. Also as you pointed out you are correct we do need to leave a few seats spare to ensure our bus is Hop-On Hop-Off if the bus is completely full people who are already on the loop are then unable to re-join the bus. It is disappointing to hear you would not travel with us again and we are sorry that you did not enjoy this experience please call our bookings office to discuss this further with me I would like to hear from you. Our number is 6236 9116. Thank you once more for your review and feedback. Kind regards, Bianca C. Marketing and Communications Coordinator

Our experience of the "Hop on Hop off" was that it was very disappointing and a waste of money ! We arrived on a cruise ship and I guess we should have realised it would be busy....and yes it was. Buying the tickets was the easy part..$40 each. A long wait ensued for the bus because of the queue, we ended up on the bottom deck of the bus which we did not want, we could not wait any longer for another bus to come along as my wife has mobility issues. The bus did the tour of city highlights, which was difficult to see from the bottom deck, stopping for quite a while at the casino, the bus was old and belching out diesel fumes, why the driver had to keep it running I just dont know. We loved Hobart but next time we will be catching the local bus and enjoy the ride allot more.

Dear David D, Thank you for sharing your feedback with us. We're truly sorry to hear about your disappointing experience with our Hop On Hop Off tour. We understand the frustration of encountering long queues, especially during peak times when cruise ships are in port. We do have six busses running on these days, to deal with the volume. We apologize for any inconvenience this caused and regret that you were unable due to mobility issues. If this had been brought to our attention on the day we would have been able to assist you and your wife further in regards to seating/waiting. We appreciate your honest feedback regarding the tour experience, including the difficulty in seeing city highlights from the bottom deck and concerns about the bus's emissions. We have five modern buses which use ad-blue which reduces emissions. We have one extra ex-London bus which we only use on Cruise ship days due to the increase in passenger numbers. Rest assured, we take all feedback seriously and understand your feedback and will take it onboard. We're glad to hear that you loved Hobart. If you decide to visit again, we hope you'll give us another chance to provide you with a better experience. If passengers are not 100% happy with their tour experience, we offer a full refund. Kind regards, Bianca C. Guest Relations Manager

We were docked with the Carnival Splendour (so our port time was limited) , had arranged a booking time of 10am. Arrived at 5 to 10 to find a large crowd waiting and 2 buses already full, ok no biggy we’re booked for 10 and we’re on time. I approached the chap who seemed to be in charge and he informed us that we had indeed missed out and would not get a bus for another 45 mins. Cos , “it’s very busy you know” , I attempted to explain our booking time etc and was laughed off. Another lady walking around pretending to be important with a bank machine and clip board also had a stupid look on her face at my suggestion that we were booked in. It was a pretty crap experience, lucky for us a bus pulled up and we just jumped on , didn’t have to show any tickets to anybody at any point. I reckon it’s a poorly run service , and of course you’ve gotta book a time and pay up front so they can afford to treat you like crap. Driver was friendly and knowledgeable, but don’t bother going by the timetable supplied cos every stop we made the bus was 20-25 mins late. Save yourself the hassle and hire a car from AAA

Hello Jarrod B. Thank you for your review. Your review was interesting to read thank you. Yes with extra people from the ship you were on arriving visiting Hobart it was busy. Due to this we had extra staff, buses and extra tour departures. The savvy travelers on the Carnival Splendor due to the ship being in port for an extra day (due to swell at Port Arthur) had utilised their city loop pass on the day prior complimentary to maximise their time at Hobart's key attractions. I had better smarten myself up by the sound of it and invest in a new clipboard! Yes, we do recommend on our busier days (when cruise ship are in port) that people arrive 20minutes earlier than the time they would like to first board the bus. This ensures passengers have ample time to ask questions, pick up the correct timetables and to make themselves comfortable in their favourite seat on the bus. I will admit that I look at many different mobile phones with bookings from many different agents, so my stupid look is probably me just squinting with aging eyes reading your booking information on your phone to ensure you were on the right tour. We work on the adage that if we take the time initially to check bookings properly then this ensures that passengers join the right tour at the right time instead of passengers hopping on the wrong bus or worse still missing their tours all together. Subsequent repeat checking of bookings just prior to hopping on the bus we believe is unnecessary and time wasting. Most peoples happy faces we remember. As with other hop on hop of bus services the driver checks tickets as people hop on and off during the day. Glad on a positive note you found our drivers on the day to be friendly and knowledgeable. We have taken your feedback on board. We apologise if our tour did not meet your expectations on this occasion. We offer full tour refunds if customers aren't 100% with their tours. Please reach out to our office to organise this. By the way I hope you got paid for your hire car recommendation!

As a Hobartian, it is hard to simply enjoy our beautiful city, without rushing to/from anywhere. I highly recommend this tour to visitors and residents alike, it is a time to sit back and really take in all the sights that we have on offer. The hop on/off option is great and the top deck is a must!

We do a lot of these tours when we arrive in a new city to familiarise ourselves with the place. This one was no exception and was a fantastic overview of Hobart. We also got some great history about the area. Would definitely recommend especially if you only have limited tome in Hobart.
