In the heart of Hobart's colourful dock precinct, you will embark on an exclusively Tasmanian wine experience at the Gasworks Cellar Door.

With 16 Tasmanian wines always on tasting, a knowledgeable wine expert to guide you through the ever-changing labels, a stylish interior design, and fascinating information about the island's wines and history- this is no ordinary tasting experience.

With its sandstone facade and tall brick chimney, it's clear that the Gasworks complex has an industrial past. The cylindrical gasometer tank that once stored coal-gas is gone, but this is the place where coal was burned to generate the gas that lit the streets of Hobart. The Cellar Door itself is located in the original Gasworks head office, where high ceilings, polished Tasmanian oak floors and a sweeping timber staircase reflect the importance of the enterprise from the late 1850s.

How it works:-

Your guide will introduce each wine in detail, talking about the region, the climate and the winemaking techniques that create each one's special character.

To taste your way around the Gasworks Cellar Door, you purchase a tasting card for $10.

There are three cards

•12 wines (20ml each)

•6 wines (40ml each) or,

•3 wines (80ml each)

The 12-wine card gives you the widest options; while the 3-wines card lets you savour a trio of your choice.

We spent some time at Gasworks this afternoon with Daniella. She was fantastic! She took the time to explain to us the nuances of the different regions and characteristics of Tasmanian Red &White wines. I can't recommend her professionalism and Gasworks highly enough!

Welcoming shop floor and knowledgeable staff. We found this to be a great experience, the wine was well explained and presented in excellent conditions (great taste, perfect temp and all round wonderful). Will definitely be visiting the online store with free delivery for 6 bottles or more - a great intro for us to Tasmanian wine 🍷👌🏼

We've travelled far & wide & done our fair share of wineries so with a little experience under our belts have no hesitation in recommending this place. Daniella, our hostess was a wealth of knowledge & we loved her down to earth approach. We found out so much more than we expected, true knowledge of how the various coastlines influence... More

We were a little bummed when the wine tour we had booked switched to a whisky tasting tour. We only had one day left in Tasmania and I saw this place in a hotel booklet. It isn't like other wine tasting places in other cities we visited where you pay so much on a card and then go up to... More

Hi Andrew, Many thanks for the kind comments and it sounds like you had a cracker time. The best thing about sending wines home after your visit is that you got to taste them before you bought them and your Tassie holiday continues when you get home as you get to drink in your holiday again when you open the... The Gasworks Cellar Door is a short walk from my Hotel in the heart of Hobart's Dock Precinct. An excellent exhibit of Tasmania's wines with informative commentary on the walls. A tasting menu is available which I tried. However space constraints precluded me from buying a bottle or two to take back to Sydney.

My partner and I popped in Saturday morning and spoke to a man who we could only explain with the word "amazing". He firstly directed us to the most incredible restaurants for dinner and helped with bookings, numbers and thankfully insisted we got dinner organized prior to doing a wine tasting. Which was lucky as very limited spots left. We... More

We were greeted buy the very professional and knowledgeable Gabby. The selection of wines is huge. The tasting rotates through the range periodically featuring 8 whites and 8 reds. These are in a dispensing fridge which maintains the optimal temperature. Doses are electronically served. Tastings do cost $10, but you get a total of 240mL of wines (12x20mL, 6x40mL, 3x80mL). Seeing as the bottles range from $30 to $65, the... More
