Located in North Hobart, the State is a local independent cinema that has entertained generations of Tasmanians for over 100 years. In addition to eight cinema screens, we also have a boutique bookstore, cafe bar and rooftop cinema. Our cinema is licensed, so you can enjoy a glass of wine while enjoying a movie!

Saw Denial with the wife at the State Cinema. Boutique cinema with Cosy seats. Friendly atmosphere and good coffee. Movie was a good watch, the book was a better read.

Very impressed with the Screening Room, which provides fabulous comfy leather lounges for a small and cozy intimate experience.

Great environment combining several theaters with a little cafe. Comfy theater chairs in an intimate space. Too bad the food is terrible and my glass of wine was off and i concur that the staff wasn't so nice.

Situated in the north hobart restaurant strip the State enjoys good patronage daily. Small cinemas provide ample opportunity for comfort and a good range of films. The newer cinemas feature comfy couches Enjoy a glass of wine or cup of coffee whilst watching great movies....More

Visited Monday night to see Lion. Being visitors to Hobart locals recommend the state theatre. Must admit very underwhelming. Greeting the lady selling tickets with a hello, how are you, I got no smile and just grunt. After the movie finished & with credits still...More

Went to see Lion, a little early so a nice wine in relaxing lounge, a purchase in the fabulous bookshop, then the movie. As usual friendly service and great atmosphere.
