Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The Synagogue was established in 1845 and is the oldest in Australia. In its earliest days, it had special seating arrangements for Jewish convicts. The many plaques and honour boards provide an insight to its history. It is worth s visit, which can be booked in advance.

This synagogue was established in 1845. The oldest synagogue in Australia. Daniel was a very knowledgable guide and very welcoming. Most is still in its original condition and well preserved. It is best to call and make an appointment.

This beautiful little synagogue is actually the oldest synagogue in Australia, dating back to 1845.
We visited the synagogue during a holiday and despite that, there were less than half a dozen people praying, as the Jewish community in Hobart is rather small.

Whether for a Jew or Gentile, visiting the Hobart synagogue, Australia’s oldest, is a delightful experience. As is the case with many churches, the membership is very low, the congregation even much less for which this tour was guided by a volunteer whose expectation, quite naturally, is that one leaves a donation. This synagogue has had no rabbi since 1956, and is in need of maintenance. Well worth it.

Easy to book on line for very personalised tours. Our volunteer guide was informed and engaging and told a multi faceted story of Hobart, Tasmania and Australia from colonial settlement to post WWII, viewed through the prism of Hobart’s Jewish community.

This building is almost hidden by the police station that surrounds it. Lovely old architecture and it is the oldest synagogue in Australia.

Interesting structure.

Definitely has an Egyptian influence it it’s style of construction.

Still active.

Small Jewish community in Hobart.

Need to make an appointment to get inside.

Worth a stop to see it.

My grandmother and I really wanted to see this beautiful old synagogue. Unfortunately we knew we wouldn't be in Hobart for Shabbat, however, the outside was still beautiful.

This is a beautiful iconic style building serving the local community. Build in an Egyptian style and is classed as the oldest synagogue in Australia. Not open all the time to non-Hebrew, the outside is worth seeing for the unique style.

I had make a appointment to see the oldest synagogue in Tasmania. We came on time and we were greeted by one of the congregation. He was very nice and shared everything with us, explaining everything we could see.

On Sabbath, the men come inside at the first floor. The women and kids go to the balcony.

There are two groups of Israelites that come here, The Progressive and the Orthodox.

The Progressive are the first ones that worship here. The orthodox come later, as they will not use a car, walking will take more time.

However, both groups work well together.

Our guide even showed the room where they make decisions.

I learned so much here and I appreciated our guide.

I enjoyed this place. It was really worthwhile!

Thank you for your review and I'm glad you enjoyed your tour. A little correction - women and kids do not go to the balcony for all services.
