Excellent exhibits on indigenous culture plus fauna and flora. Hints : take your time, allow more time. A lot to absorb but it's definitely worth itVisited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 16 October 2023
- SMOAI76Tasmania, Australia1,806 contributionsGood mixture of art and historyWell worth a visit and excellent variety of displays of art old and new, historical Tasmanian information, great indigenous culture/history displays all wrapped up in some wonderful old buildings. Cafe and shop onsite too. Very atmospheric a gallery with character, would recommend and give yourself at least a couple hours.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 December 2023
- car0leb66Brisbane, Australia262 contributionsBrilliant Museum and Art GalleryOur family really enjoyed our visit to this museum and art gallery. There was just about the right mix of art and museum in a very beautiful old historic building. The cafe is also a great plus for weary tourists. There was a fantastic exhibition on of Lloyd Rees from his early to late works. Such a beautiful talented artist. We were very fortunate to see it s we didn't know it was on. Our grandchildren also learned a lot about the history of Tasmania and were very interested making connections as we toured around. It is really well curated for both adults and children. Top marks!Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 16 April 2024

On entry you can leave your bags in lockers, we were recommended to the museum by our free walking tour guide and we really enjoyed our time there. The comprehensive displays are imaginative and interesting. The staff were helpful and friendly as we explored the the artifacts and exhibits of Tasmanian history and wildlife. We came to Hobart by cruise ship and the museum was not far from Salamanca markets opposite the harbour. A free museum and well worth a visit.

Hard to believe that this great museum is free! Exquisite exhibit on Antarctic and the expeditions to this winter wonderland—penguins, birds and voyages that reveal the magic behind the ice.
Also a great exhibit on the indigenous tribes and their culture. There are some guided tours so time your visit accordingly. Learn about the extinct and endangered animals (Tasmanian Tiger.) Wish we had more time here it was so inspiring.
Very kid friendly with scavenger hunt clipboards for children.
And we learned that David Walsh, the famous Tasmanian who founded the MONA spent every Sunday here (the compromise he worked out with his parents instead of going to church.) This has a lasting impact on his curious and creative mind. We should all spend more time at this amazing museum!

Has been quite some time since I came here and I am sorry I have left it so long. Staff are friendly and helpful providing guidance on what to see and do. I highly recommend the current exhibition of the West Coast of Tasmania. Very informative.

Front door staff and display staff very officious and less than helpful.
Visit in December with difficulty entering and noisy displays with video sound that conflict with one another. Feedback to staff gave a response that it is wasted on him and that on line feedback was beat way to resolve. REALLY...!!!!

Was looking forward to seeing this museum but it was a big let down a lot of empty space and heaps of stuffed animals. Walked through half of the place then was approached by a staff member who told me I would have to go store my backpack and water bottle back at reception before I could continue looking. This seemed strange as there was no signage to say so when I entered and nothing was said to me by the 2 staff members I passed when entering into 2 different exhibits, seemed like the 10 other people I passed walking in with backpacks didn't get the message either. Wouldn't recommend anyone waste their time with this place, it sucks as far as museum's go.

This free attraction is just a short walk from dockside, and preserves the history of the old site while presenting history and art in excellent surroundings. It is not large, but to explore all the rooms properly, and read the excellent descriptions, visitors would need 1 - 2 hours. The exhibits are a mix of art, history, natural history and more, and there is something to encourage the curiosity of all ages, from the thylacine room to the animals and the art works old and new. Highly recommended.

I don’t understand why parents think it’s ok for their little angels to run amok in a public setting like this. I, like many others, were enjoying some of the museums exhibits in nice peace and quiet, until a couple with their young one came in. He spent most of the time running around and shouting, with no interest in learning anything. I guess that’s what’s happens when you make somewhere like this free entry :(

I only did the museum (rather than art) stuff whilst waiting for high winds to die down before going up to Mt Wellington. Its free so visit to see the skins and exhibit of the Tasmanian Tiger in far corner of ground floor. upstairs is fantastic museum on geography, ecology and human exploration of antarctica that could take up a whole day!

As a free thing to enter, I am not disappointed in it. Some interesting exhibits but it is a very small place especially for a museum and art gallery combined. We spent 45min here. A tricky process to get in at the moment: booking online then showing confirmation of that and the QR code and then cloaking your bag while getting asked the whole time which steps you'd done.

I idly wandered into TMAG and was unexpectedly fascinated by the Numismatic/currency collection. The section staff member was knowledgeable, passionate and extremely engaging helping me to understand currency in ancient history and its' comparison to modern times.
A memorable experience.
