- JillianCGreater Melbourne, Australia13 contributionsA glimpse into our convict pastThis was an amazing tour and our guide Sarah was fabulous. Yes it is a smaller site than some of the other historical jail sites but boy does it pack a punch. We learnt the history of the remaining parts of the building (unfortunately a lot was demolished due to "progress" in the city - such a shame). What we did see though was just so interesting and we learnt more about our convict history in this compact setting than elsewhere. The Pandemonium movie in the chapel was great and it put a face and background to the convicts making it more true to life. The tour of the court and mock sentencing added some realism. We then moved onto the gallows area and the related stories - especially Margaret Coghlin. This site is not as well known as the other convict sites in Tasmania but is well worth the visit. Thanks for an extremely interesting and knowledgeable tour and it has heightened our interest in our convict history.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 October 2023

Our tour guide Matthew was knowledgeable and created a vision of life back in the early days of penal settlements in Tasmania. A must do for new visitors to Hobart. - Laura Q80 contributionsSuper interesting GAOLI didn’t have time to visit Port Arthur on my tour to Hobart. I’m certainly glad that I visited this historic jail (gaol) in Hobart. I opted for the 11:30am tour. The tour lasted for about 1.5 hours. It was well done and included a movie about the history of convicts in Tasmania. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable. It was a great tour! I highly recommend it. 😀Visited November 2023Travelled soloWritten 14 November 2023

She answered all our questions and explained all facts. Thank you, Helen!!! Chapel has very interesting history with dark moments, and we learned a lot about that place, people and Hobart.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 November 2023
- Stuart M1 contributionBest Convict Tour In Southern TasmaniaAs a family, we’ve undertaken convict tours at Port Arthur, Richmond Gaol, and now the Hobart Penitentiary. The Hobart Penitentiary was easily the best of them. The way the Penitentiary uses technology to bring the convicts to life through movies and interactive displays is simply amazing. You really feel as though you get to know the convicts and the experiences they faced. Even our most historically-indifferent child (8 years old) found the tour fascinating. Our three children talked about convicts all the way on our 30 minute drive home. I can’t recommend the tour highly enough. And massive kudos to the people who have tirelessly worked to bring archives to life. They have done a sensational job.Visited November 2023Travelled with familyWritten 30 December 2023

- 602TonyPerth, Australia529 contributionsA must visit if interested in Tasmanian history and especially if you have Convict ancestry. Our visit to the Hobart Penitentiary was a highlight of our visit to Hobart. Tasmania has a Convict history unequalled elsewhere in Australia and the "Tench" displays it warts and all. The opportunity to trace your convict ancestry was most impressive due to the comprehensive records available which are continually being added to. The visual presentations were excellent and the static displays around the site are impressive. A lot of effort has gone into making this an excellent museum and data site. The staff were most keen to assist you in your search for ancestors and their stories. A visit is highly recommended.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 January 2024

We had learned so much about the history of the penitentiary and the convicts who were brought there. Our tour guide, Angela, was very well-versed with the history and conveyed historical anecdotes in such a compelling way! What a fascinating history! We are happy that this historical site has been well-maintained and open to the public. This is a must-see historical site. Don't miss it when you are in Hobart. Many thanks to tour guides such as Angela for giving us such a memorable tour!Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 January 2024

If you are travelling to Hobart and want to know more about convicts then this is the place to come. Our guide Angela was knowledgeable and enthusiastic. We were shown far more of the site than I expected to see and it’s (mostly) the original. Book in advance or you may miss out. We had 24 on our tour. Tour lasts 90 minutes but goes very quickly. Thanks to The National Trust. A worthy advocate for maintaining our heritage.Visited January 2024Travelled soloWritten 12 January 2024

I was really looking forward to this visit but was a little disappointed to be honest. Our guide was engaging and very knowledgeable, but there were a couple of reasons for the disappointment;
1. We prebooked the tour so we wouldn’t miss out, but it was oversubscribed because they sold more tickets than they should have. We were told at the start that there are usually 15 on a tour, but there were 24 on ours. This was just too many people to cram into the starting room, and also to take on this kind of tour.
2. Because the group was so large, we completely missed the commentary regarding the solitary cells, the next cells (I still no idea what they are), and the start of the talk at the gallows. By the time those of us at the end of the line had filed through the narrow spaces and doorways, the talk for those sections was over. There just isn’t space for 24 people to fit in and hear what’s being said, so we were stuck waiting for people to move through.
3. As you can’t access the rooms without being on the tour, it needs to be at least half an hour longer. There’s simply no time to read any of the information boards as well as listen to the guide in the courtroom areas.
4. The movie was at least twice as long as it should be. The info was interesting, but it really could be shortened.
Thank you again to our guide who was very interesting, but she was never going to be able to cater for such a large group - not in the available space.

Hi Lea550,
Thank you for taking the time to tell us your thoughts - all feedback is welcomed.
We're so sorry that your tour was overbooked - this is not a regular occurrence for us, and was the consequence of an online ticketing hiccup.
Never-the-less, we want all of our guests to have an enjoyable and memorable experience while on tour with us.
If you could get in touch via admin@nationaltrusttas.org.au, we'd like to make amends.
Look forward to hearing from you soon!

The Convict Penitentiary is a fascinating place. Four years ago we had a guided tour which was a most informative, professional and interesting experience, done by an obviously 'tour savvy', practical guide. We returned to the facility last week with another family member and booked the same tour. This time it was conducted by an enthusiastic, but dates-heavy, fairly opinionated guide who unfortunately was not 'tour savvy' - including inexperienced in 'operating the crowd'. Hence, this time, the tour was rather 'ordinary', unfortunately, and perhaps the least highlight in a great 12 days in Tasmania.

We found the 90 minute tour to be very interesting and worthwhile (AD$25 pp). Regrettably, the main part of the penitentiary was demolished in 1960, but they have made the most of what remains. The a 35 minute movie shown near the end of the tour was a bit strange, but informative. There were some interesting statics on convict transportations as you enter the building.

We were met by Jim and Belinda who welcomed us at the start of the tour. Kyle was our volunteer tour guide and he did an excellent job. At the start Kyle asked where everyone was from and then the tour began. The “cinema” experience is full on. Motor driven blinds lower to cover the windows and then lights are lowered and extinguished. Three Panasonic projectors screen the video simultaneously on 3 interior walls. The sound is full on and reminded me very much of the sound system you would find at the State Cinema or other theatres. Underground is another world and certainly not a very nice place back in its day for the unfortunate. For a long time this would not have been a nice place but today it is well worth visiting. Kyle was very knowledgeable and informative and the tour was an experience not easily forgotten.

I found the experience amazing here learning about all the old convicts was great!
The tour gide was around 90+ minutes long and was very informative and great. He was also such a nice bloke aswell.
The only negative side too this is I felt the $31 dollars was a little bit on the expensive side when you consider all the other prices of the museums in both Tasmania and Victoria as a hull are normally quite a bit cheaper than that.
But overall it was a lovely day out.

I'd really like to say this was an amazing place. Sadly I can't as we never managed to get inside! I really wanted to see this place and after struggling to find it (Google Maps must have been playing up), we arrived for the 2pm tour, only to find a notice on the door saying it was closed yesterday, today and Sunday because of lack of volunteers. I have no problem with that EXCEPT they hadn't put it on their website so you only knew once you'd turned up. Not good enough, even if it is run by volunteers. Suggest you phone beforehand if you want to go

The location has a small museum that contains artifacts found at the site along with photographs and records to look at. the main area can only be accessed by tour. The tour was informative and gave you a glimpse into what life for a convict was like. Part of the tour includes a video that introduced you to some of the penitentiary's residents. Our guide, Matthew, was friendly and seemed passionate about the location. He answered questions.
I stayed for the ghost tour with Stacey. It was still light outside but that didn't take away from the creepiness of a completely dark solitary cell. Even if you don't believe, I would recommend it as a way to further immerse yourself into what the convicts went through. Stacey was engaging and fun.

Our guide was just amazing. His depth of knowledge and speaking about the atrocities as though he was there and knew these characters personally - just blown away.
As we walked through the wonderfully preserved building - it was with a heavy heart being told stories of what the convicts went through.
Well done National Trust for keeping these stories alive,

Thoroughly enjoyed this piece of Australian history. Our guide was obviously very informed and passionate about his job - volunteer position. He kept our attention for the full hour of his tour. The presentation inside the penitentiary was exceptionally well done, with holograms of convicts speaking to us. A great way to learn about how these poor souls were treated.

Can you tell me about the story of Mark Jeffery?
Written 7 August 2019
Hi Tony,
Mark Jefferys was a convict his height was 6 foot and 1 and half inches tall he was transported for burglary and assault in 1850. He was sent to Norfolk Island on board the Eliza. Then in 1855 Norfolk Island closed and he was sent to Port Arthur. He was often getting himself in to trouble for his temper and was often complaining about his food rations. He was put into leg irons which ended making him a cripple and was sent to the Hobart Goal in 1877. You can find out more about him though a book called a burglars Life which he wrote. he wrote these stories before his death and these were published into a book later on. I hope this helps.

Hi, I have a child in a wheelchair, I read on one of the reviews there are lots of stairs, is this a place that would not be appropriate for him to visit?
Written 13 May 2019
Hi Ann,
Unfortunately due to the nature of the site we are generally inaccessible to those in wheelchairs, lots of stairs and narrow, uneven spaces.
We do have some small areas that are accessible via a few stairs and viewable from a ramp.
While generally we are a guided experience, if notified we can organise a shortened experience of the site and provide access to the few spaces that are generally more accessible.
Please send us an email, or give us a call and I can also send you some images for you to better get an idea of the spaces.
Warm regards,
Chandra

Hi there. Was wondering if you would do a tour outside of the Monday & Friday you do the tours. We're coming from Melbourne and be there from 22nd to 24th November. Was really hoping you maybe able to squeeze a tour in for us either on 22nd or 23rd. We're limited for time so can't change our dates unfortunately.
Thank you in anticipation

Hi there,
Unfortunately our Ghost Tours are available for those aged 15+, as the stories told are quite ghoulish.
We do have our regular Day Tours, which would be suitable for your children. For more information you can take a look at our website.

I'm so sorry I'm not sure. There are a few prisons I understand in different locations. I have to think the cruise line would offer at least one of the prison tours. Probably best be sure and ask them directly.
Written 20 February 2016
Is the Tench within walking distance of the Cruise Ships? What is the street address please?
Written 4 October 2015
Yes, The Tench is walking distance from the Cruise Terminal or you can catch the Red Decker Bus (Old Hobart Gaol stop) We are on the corner of Brisbane and Campbell Streets (opposite OfficeWorks). Pls check times of tours on our general website or booking website or with the Hobart visitor centre We look forward to seeing you!

Hello, is there wheelchair access? Mum can get up and walk short distances but stairs would be out of the question. I would accompany her and could wait whilst the main group explores the tunnels without us. Do you think this is an option or would we miss too much of the night tour fun?
Written 18 September 2015
Hi there - I notice you mention 'night fun' so assume you are wanting to go on the ghost tour. You will see from answers below that we have steps and tunnels and rough ground for much of the tour, so it might be to difficult to ensure your safety, especially in the dark (we don't like leaving people on their own at night!). But please contact our property coordinator, Ted, to see what we can do in terms of a day tour.
Written 21 September 2015
Is the ghost tour suitable for an elderly man. He is mobile but very slow moving
Written 18 January 2015
As long as he is able to navigate some fairly steep stairs down to the tunnels (there is a rail to hang on to) and old, uneven tunnel floors, he should be OK. The tour is fairly slow moving (as there are frequent stops for ghost stories/historical facts) but it would probably be a good idea for him to have someone with him to assist. Some of our volunteer guides are in their mid-80's!
