- Priscilla G1 contributionInteresting tour lead by MatthewI went for a tour on Sun27 Nov. I loved it. I've been a Hobart local for a few years now, and thought it was about time to visit and have a tour of the Hobart Convict Penitentiary site. Matthew was our tour guide - he was amazing!! Really knowledgeable and communicated very clearly. Thanks also to Skye who kicked off the tour! The tour was informative and interesting. Highly recommend. Thank you to the volunteers.Visited November 2022Written 2 December 2022
- Annette19 contributionsA reminder of the horrid things humans will do to each other.Authentic and raw guided tour well told by our knowledgeable volunteer guide - Mathew, and including a short film showing the realities and horrors of those poor souls sent to this place from far across the seas from the 1830s. It was the first holding place for convicts (known by them as the ‘Tench’ ) once sent to Van Diemens Land. Bring good layers as it was a bit cold once seated for the film. Also there are challenging narrow steps to negotiate. Some might find that difficult.Visited December 2022Written 16 December 2022
- Mary DCork, Ireland5 contributionsSuperb tour of the Tench!Excellent and interesting tour thanks to our very knowledgeable tour guide Mike. A must see if in Hobart. We are a family of 4 from Ireland with 2 adult children and we all thoroughly enjoy our tour of the Tench. The video is informative and very interesting.Visited December 2022Travelled with familyWritten 28 December 2022
- Jessica S2 contributionsGhost tour!I attended the ‘Stacey’s ghost and paranormal tours’ of the Hobart Convict Penitentiary site today. I thoroughly enjoyed it! A medium sized group ensured everyone was included and enjoyed the experience. The guides, Michelle and Stacey know all there is to know about the history of the building and it’s happenings! I had a great experience- thank you!Visited December 2022Travelled soloWritten 30 December 2022
- shylowinspear1Sydney, Australia149 contributionsGreat tourGreat tour, very informative. Love how Hobart kept so much of their historic buildings. The only suggestion is that the movie they show be reduced by half, it was 35 minutes long and just far too long for kids to enjoy.Visited December 2022Written 7 January 2023
- katev1564 contributionsExcellent tourThe tour was fantastic. The guide Matthew was clear and informative. The film was great- well done and easy to follow for all ages. The gallows were cool. Great history lesson on the early settlement time of Hobart.Visited January 2023Travelled with familyWritten 10 January 2023
- Christine W4 contributionsHistorical insight to early prison life. The staff member, (Sky) was fantastic. She went above and beyond to make sure we enjoyed the tour. Volunteer guides were very knowledgeable. Shared some interesting stories and obviously are passionate about this site and its history. Included movie, whilst very interesting, was a little long for the younger people.Visited January 2023Travelled with familyWritten 16 January 2023
- FyingKiwiChristchurch, New Zealand940 contributionsVery InformativeIt is very easy to see why this attraction has such a high rating and why it is essential that early bookings for the tour are necessary. Visitors are given a very thorough history of the Convict Penitentiary and some of those who were guests there before being open to tours. The tour includes a stunning audio-visual presentation which certainly provokes one's thinking.Visited January 2023Written 17 January 2023
- Zara M2 contributionsFriendly and knowledgeable. Extremely worthwhile.Wow! What an experience! Skye our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and friendly. More than happy to answer all our questions and made the tour extremely enjoyable. Would love to come back for the ghost your. - kstraveler81Naples, Florida1,592 contributionsVery informativeWe found the 90 minute tour to be very interesting and worthwhile (AD$25 pp). Regrettably, the main part of the penitentiary was demolished in 1960, but they have made the most of what remains. The a 35 minute movie shown near the end of the tour was a bit strange, but informative. There were some interesting statics on convict transportations as you enter the building.Visited January 2023Written 27 January 2023

Penitentiary Chapel is something that has to be visited. Helen, tour guide was amazing, knowledgeable, professional and friendly in same time. She answered all our questions and explained all facts.
Thank you, Helen!!!
Chapel has very interesting history with dark moments, and we learned a lot about that place, people and Hobart.

The history of the jail was fascinating. The tour itself was a bit silly with jump scares. There was a child in the 8pm Ghost tour, then they were scared. It impacted our session as the guide couldn’t go into detail with some stories as little ears were around. Would have liked some of the other stories told.

I didn’t have time to visit Port Arthur on my tour to Hobart. I’m certainly glad that I visited this historic jail (gaol) in Hobart. I opted for the 11:30am tour. The tour lasted for about 1.5 hours. It was well done and included a movie about the history of convicts in Tasmania. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable. It was a great tour! I highly recommend it. 😀

This tour was a real eye opener! I've lived in Hobart all my life and walked and driven past this site hundreds of times, always knowing (sort of) what it was but it was fascinating to actually go in and see and hear the details.
We took four grandchildren; 11, 9, 8 and 5 and they were all intrigued and interested over the whole time.
Our guide, Matthew, was fluent and expressive and took time to let us know about some especially "gruesome" events coming up in the narrative. He also took great care to help a woman in the group with accessibility issues.
The short film was engrossing and very effectively screened around the walls of the chapel.
The condition of the building seemed good; we were very impressed with the Court Room, the prisoner tunnels and the gallows!
Thank you to everyone and well done on maintaining this wonderful piece of history.

I really enjoyed my tour today. Christine is very knowledgeable and brought the history of the penitentiary to life. An amazing 40min video is included in the 90min tour. If history is your thing, this tour is for you.

Hi, I have a child in a wheelchair, I read on one of the reviews there are lots of stairs, is this a place that would not be appropriate for him to visit?
Chandra Altoff
Hobart, Tasmania, Australia4 contributions
Hi Ann,
Unfortunately due to the nature of the site we are generally inaccessible to those in wheelchairs, lots of stairs and narrow, uneven spaces.
We do have some small areas that are accessible via a few stairs and viewable from a ramp.
While generally we are a guided experience, if notified we can organise a shortened experience of the site and provide access to the few spaces that are generally more accessible.
Please send us an email, or give us a call and I can also send you some images for you to better get an idea of the spaces.
Warm regards,
Chandra

Hi there. Was wondering if you would do a tour outside of the Monday & Friday you do the tours. We're coming from Melbourne and be there from 22nd to 24th November. Was really hoping you maybe able to squeeze a tour in for us either on 22nd or 23rd. We're limited for time so can't change our dates unfortunately.
Thank you in anticipation

Hi Lyn,
Are you after one of our Day Tours or our Ghost Tour?
Our Ghost Tour is run by a third party and can run tours outside of Monday and Friday evenings for large groups of 15+ people, but unfortunately would otherwise be unable to. For more information please email us.
Our Day Tours run 7 days a week, with 4 tours on weekdays at 10am, 11:30am, 1pm and 2:30pm and 2 on weekends at 1pm and 2:30pm. We would love to have you visit.
Warm regards,
Chandra
Hi, we are visiting next week and interested in tour. I'm just wondering if the ghost tour would be suitable for 11 & 13 yr old kids. Thanks in advance, we don't want to scare the absolute crap out of them! But a memorable experience would be what I'm looking for.

Hi there,
Unfortunately our Ghost Tours are available for those aged 15+, as the stories told are quite ghoulish.
We do have our regular Day Tours, which would be suitable for your children. For more information you can take a look at our website.
Warm regards,
Chandra

I'm so sorry I'm not sure. There are a few prisons I understand in different locations. I have to think the cruise line would offer at least one of the prison tours. Probably best be sure and ask them directly.

Is the Tench within walking distance of the Cruise Ships? What is the street address please?
Tas_Bex
Hobart, Australia40 contributions
Yes, The Tench is walking distance from the Cruise Terminal or you can catch the Red Decker Bus (Old Hobart Gaol stop) We are on the corner of Brisbane and Campbell Streets (opposite OfficeWorks). Pls check times of tours on our general website or booking website or with the Hobart visitor centre We look forward to seeing you!

Hello, is there wheelchair access? Mum can get up and walk short distances but stairs would be out of the question. I would accompany her and could wait whilst the main group explores the tunnels without us. Do you think this is an option or would we miss too much of the night tour fun?
Tas_Bex
Hobart, Australia40 contributions
Hi there - I notice you mention 'night fun' so assume you are wanting to go on the ghost tour. You will see from answers below that we have steps and tunnels and rough ground for much of the tour, so it might be to difficult to ensure your safety, especially in the dark (we don't like leaving people on their own at night!). But please contact our property coordinator, Ted, to see what we can do in terms of a day tour.

Is the ghost tour suitable for an elderly man. He is mobile but very slow moving
Tas_Bex
Hobart, Australia40 contributions
As long as he is able to navigate some fairly steep stairs down to the tunnels (there is a rail to hang on to) and old, uneven tunnel floors, he should be OK. The tour is fairly slow moving (as there are frequent stops for ghost stories/historical facts) but it would probably be a good idea for him to have someone with him to assist. Some of our volunteer guides are in their mid-80's!
