I’ve always been fascinated by the Franklin River and had it on my wishlist of wilderness adventures for as long as I can remember. It was just a passing conversation with a mountain bike shuttle driver at Derby a few years ago that really set the sead in my head. This driver told me of a small family outfit who guided trips down the river. He told me they had great equipment, great cooks and really loved the river and did it for all the right reasons and that it was an adventure of a lifetime. Everything he said was right. You ring Franklin River Rafting you speak to owner and head guide Elias. You get out there on the river and his partner Franzi is guiding you through the rapids yelling instructions and keeping you safe. All the other guides on the trip were experienced outdoor adventurers and great camp cooks. The food is amazing. The river is the most amazing wilderness, isolated , pristine, untouched, wild, beautiful and inspiring places. You have never enjoyed being wet this much. The guides were all really knowledgeable about the history of the river and the fight to save it in the 70’s and 80’s. This really adds to the experience. You’re not just experiencing one of the most beautiful grand places you’ve ever been. Your seeing a place that was nearly lost forever only 40 years ago. Nearly a year later I’m still buzzing and nearly can’t quiet believe that I have actually paddled The Franklin River in Southwest Tasmania.

If you want an experience that will leave you feeling totally re-inspired, connected to nature and up for more big adventures in your life this is the trip for you. Don’t get me wrong there were moments were it was challenging and scary however absolutely worth it. I was pushed out of my comfort zone every day, I hung out with amazing people, I ate delicious food, I star gazed every night, I swam in the river, I learned more about how the Franklin was saved, but best of all the river was high and the rapids were fast and I had the most fun in a long time!

A ten day trip on the Franklin was the most remote and pristine wilderness experience I have ever had. Franklin River Rafting got everything right - the best rafting gear, amazing camp food, and exceptional guides. It was exciting, beautiful, often cold (but we had a warmish day to go for a swim), heaps of fun, educational, with the serenity of being away from news and social media. Franklin River Rafting are the specialists for this trip. They know everything about the river, the environment, the rapids, the history, and how to be comfortable in south west Tassie for a week and a bit. I loved it and am working out when to book my next trip.

Our guides, Paul and Jordy were exceptional. From expert and energetic raft handling to remarkably impressive meals. Being totally helpful throughout, they did all they could to make this challenging experience: fun, pleasurable and memorable. Not expecting 7 days of rain with chilling conditions in January (and not bringing enough warm gear), it could have been a struggle without such wonderful tour leaders.'Paulie' was always up beat, his constant laugh and love of sharing this experience was genuine and appreciated. Jordy is a superstar and modest, knowledgable rafting guide and a great chef. I think the owners Elias and Franci have cracked the formula attracting the best guides with the right gear and high level of service. Words of warning. If you like your home comforts, stay at home. If you're not a regular hiker, Frenchman's Cap is brutal. If you don't like being wet, leave this off your bucket list. If you love nature without human destruction, you'll enjoy and appreciate the Franklin River ... thank god for the Greenies.

It was 8 days and a lifetime of memories. A great trip from start to finish. It was certainly challenging in spots which added to its appeal. Scenery that very few get to see in a setting that would be the envy of the world. I had initial reservations about camping under tarps but this just added to the experience. I would take another small ground mat(shade cloth is perfect) as the one supplied just covered the sleep mat. I would also take a water bottle for use during the day(you need to keep fluid intake up). The pack list apart from my two suggested editions was spot on. Our guides Eric and Jordy, despite their years were extremely knowledgeable and passionate about the Franklin. What they managed to serve up(food) each day and night in that setting was astounding. I couldn't have enjoyed it more if I tried.
