Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Derek is a wonderful tour guide. We went to Mt Field with him and we love our experience very much. We went to Mt Field on the hottest day in 122 years and Derek was so thoughtful to remind us about that days ago. On our way to Mt Field, he has shared with us a lot of information and knowledge about Tasmania and Mt Field. His professionalism has made our trip wonderful and memorable. Prior to the trip, he asked about our hiking experience and ability in order to tailor made a suitable trail for us. Our experience indeed a very nice one. We highly recommend Derek to anyone who wish to have an amazing experience on Mt Field.

Thanks Raymond. Yes, what a day, beautiful weather and wonderful walks but 39C at Mt Field was a challenge for all. Hopefully it will not be quite so hot on your next visit. Happy Travels

If you want an experienced and knowledgeable guide who makes it his job to assure you have the most enjoyable and comfortable time while touring his hometown, then this is the guy and the tour for you. From the temperature in the car to the restaurants we stopped in for tea and sweets. From the top of the mountain with the most incredible views to the hikes in the forest.where we walked among giant eucalyptus and saw beautiful waterfalls and so much more. Our desire was to learn about this place and its people. We did and more. Mahalo (thank you) Derek.

Thank you Derek for the great day. Your assistance getting over the rocks at Recherche Bay. The food was great too. Enjoyed the advice and research that you have done behind the scenes for the trip. Weather was changeable but still enjoyed the drive through the different landscapes. The beach and rock walk was not too long and you gave us a chance to walk at our pace. Thank you also for allowing us to go to Frank’s to do a cider tasting too. Recommend people to make the time to do this tour at Recherche Bay with Derek from Southern 4WD.

Thanks John, It was a great day even with the weather a bit variable but the coastal trees certainly helped. I enjoyed your company and it was a pleasure to show you a lesser known part of Tassie.

We did a few day trips (Hartz mountains, Mount Wellington, Bay of Fires, Columbia falls…..) with Derek and all of them were just amazing! He is just the best. Very knowledgeable, friendly, enthusiastic , flexible and he was always trying his best to make us feel comfortable and safe. It wasn’t even a problem that my parents did not speak English perfectly.

Derek offers private individual tours for ideally 4 people. He drives his van and you can sit down comfortably and enjoy the scenery. With Derek you can explore the real Tasmania, the insider tips, where hardly any tourists are to be found. If you want to go to the crowded Instagram hotspots you are wrong here but if you want to explore the probably most beautiful landscapes (especially beaches) with hardly a soul this is the trip to do!

Derek always strives to meet the needs of his guests, there was always time for a photo stop or a coffee. We saw so much of Tasmania in just a few days and we did not have to worry about anything. We always felt safe with him!
Derek also offers an apartment in his house that is spacious and really nice.

Even if I had to, I would not be able to name a favorite spot or trip we did, all of them were just amazing, no matter what the weather was like! We enjoyed the days so much together and learned a lot about this beautiful, unique island!

Thanks again for one of the most amazing journeys we ever did, Derek!

Thanks Angie, I am very pleased that everyone enjoyed the tours so much. We did see a lot of Tassy in a short time, and we certainly saw some of the best. It was certainly my pleasure and its why I love this job so much.

What a fantastic day. Derek was so knowledgeable about the area. A private tour made it very enjoyable. Derek personally tailored the day to our interests. Having lunch looking over the southern ocean was a highlight.

I'm so pleased you enjoyed one of my special trips to somewhere not too many visitors see. Having a good walk, and then a nice lunch right on the southern ocean and in reasonable weather is pretty great in my book too.

Had an incredible time with Derek on our trip to Hartz mountain national park! Unfortunately it was pouring when we made it there, but Derek was still able to take us on some really cool hikes through the rainforest, and made sure we were all comfortable and warm during and after the walks. Having hot water/coffee ready was a great touch. Derek's also really friendly and knowledgeable on all things Tassie, and I got plenty of great advice for the remainder of my trip.

Thank you for the kind comments Susheel. The weather was certainly unkind to us but we still had a good day, and you were even able to brave the condition in shorts!! The scenery was amazing which certainly helps under these conditions and to see these remote areas in such weather was a wonderful experience and rarely seen by visitors, certainly very few on the day we went. Happy Travels
